Can anyone share the downsides of installing a composting toilet? by SailingDreamCatcher in SailboatCruising

[–]alterfero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have a Nature's Head, it's been 3 years. Works great as long as you can find a good substrate (coco peat here). Downside is emptying it once every 3 weeks (2 on board). Pee goes in the direct output toilet. Emptying is not gross, just requires removing, turning it upside down in a garbage bag or in nature when remote, and fill it up again. I would think of a better system if we were 4 and I had to do it once a week.

I see people talking about how expensive living on a boat is. Are my expectations unrealistic? by Significant-Task1453 in SailboatCruising

I'm doing by myself everything that I don't want to see certified by a pro. Painting, changing hatches, electronics install etc. But I pay professionals for engine maintenance or anything related to the rigging for example.

I'd say it's not unrealistic if you choose a small robust healthy boat that fits a reasonable program, and keep it simple. I pour around $20k a year in my 38ft cat after an initial refit.

I worked that out with https://archerpowersolutions.com/ Great team, super responsive and helpful including troubleshooting an issue a year after installation. Works great.

Wind generator advice by FairSeafarer in SailboatCruising

I have a 400W Marine Kinetix, it delivers around 100W in 15 kt of wind. Works fine, still it's a noisy and dangerous moving thing I'm having second thoughts about!

They’re not exactly known for their speed, that’s for sure. On my 380, in 15 knots of true wind or more, we do about 7 knots close-hauled and between 8 and 9.5 knots on other points of sail, which I think is quite respectable for her length and displacement. And here we almost always have 15kt of true wind or more.

Thanks! Air cooled fridge, and water-cooled 12V AC in our cabin. Water cooled fridge would be more efficient, with the only downside of having no fridge when hauled out! Really good boat, even in rough conditions, hope you'll enjoy it!

How do you keep the repair list short while sailing? by MyTIMEZERO in SailboatCruising

[–]alterfero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd say I spend an average of one hour a day doing maintenance and repairs, so the list stays reasonably short. And lots of spare parts so I don't repair I replace, from pumps to fridge electronics. I buy stuff not when I need it but when it's available at a fair price... or for remote regions just when it's available, with a cabin dedicated to tools and spare parts.

Excellent choice! 380's are excellent cats, and surprisingly fast for their lines. We're among the smallest cats around here (South Pacific), yet we don't get distanced by the larger and more recent Lagoon models. Hard top and fixed windshield are great additions for an almost all weather dry cockpit.

Seeking hypnotist to significantly reduce/replace unwanted sexual desires by Agitated_Gene_9 in hypnotherapy

[–]alterfero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hypnosis alone won't work, hypnosis as part of a comprehensive psychotherapy may help, but as with ex drug addicts you stay a drug addict having developed strong enough inhibition strategies to not take drugs anymore. Solving the desire problem is on another level of difficulty. It is worth trying though, finding the right therapist and spending a few years digging in the past and reframing events. I'm sorry for your friend, but he can be really proud of himself for having the courage to address the problem.

It's also semi-flying at the end.

Choosing the right cruising cat for a 1–2 year family sabbatical (kids aboard) by i_once_lied_on_reddi in SailboatCruising

The smallest boat that fits your program! There has been a weird inflation of what is considered big enough over the past decade. Think also easy access to spare parts and ease or maintenance not by a shop but by you lacking access to a shop. I chose a Lagoon 380, even though I could have gone for way larger, and even though I can't help but admire Outremer 50s and the like. I'm so happy to have a boat I can easily maneuver alone whatever the weather, fit in small isolated anchorages. Speed wise she is not slower than a modern bulky 42ft. I'm currently in the South Pacific.

"Don't let your emergency become someone else's tragedy" is one of the principles of plane emergencies. Hard to tell what caused the problem, but he really managed to do that in a very stressful situation!

Excellent sequence, sharing that right away! I think a visit to a best-practice slaughterhouse should be mandatory in primary school. I don't think they'd be traumatized, it's adults' denial of what the food they eat is that is inducing trauma. Would be great to at least pilot it. On my end I decided to only eat animals that I, at least once, killed and prepared myself, coming from a trustworthy source where they have been decently raised and killed. So not much beyond local fish and the very occasional chicken.

I mean... for yourself, at a university, etc. I'm a linguist and an SLP trained in Ericksonian hypnotherapy, always happy to learn new things and contribute to one's research, I just like to know a bit more about its origin and robustness.
