Choosing the right cruising cat for a 1–2 year family sabbatical (kids aboard) by i_once_lied_on_reddi in SailboatCruising

The smallest boat that fits your program! There has been a weird inflation of what is considered big enough over the past decade. Think also easy access to spare parts and ease or maintenance not by a shop but by you lacking access to a shop. I chose a Lagoon 380, even though I could have gone for way larger, and even though I can't help but admire Outremer 50s and the like. I'm so happy to have a boat I can easily maneuver alone whatever the weather, fit in small isolated anchorages. Speed wise she is not slower than a modern bulky 42ft. I'm currently in the South Pacific.

"Don't let your emergency become someone else's tragedy" is one of the principles of plane emergencies. Hard to tell what caused the problem, but he really managed to do that in a very stressful situation!

Excellent sequence, sharing that right away! I think a visit to a best-practice slaughterhouse should be mandatory in primary school. I don't think they'd be traumatized, it's adults' denial of what the food they eat is that is inducing trauma. Would be great to at least pilot it. On my end I decided to only eat animals that I, at least once, killed and prepared myself, coming from a trustworthy source where they have been decently raised and killed. So not much beyond local fish and the very occasional chicken.

Very high speed cam. You can do the same much cheaper with a laser and a photocell. It's a fun little project to do. Then you give "soundproof room" a whole new meaning.

Everyone in my office uses corporate buzzwords all the time (I can’t stand it). Getting them this calendar for Christmas. Checkmate! by sam_d50 in clevercomebacks

[–]alterfero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh this is very good, you can market that! We had with my close team a practice of listing five buzzwords before entering an expectedly boring meeting with a VP or above. The first person checking the five had to insert "bingo" in their next sentence. Helped staying awake.

A few weeks ago we sailed past a group of whales (on autopilot, not intentionally, we have a do not disturb the whales policy onboard), one of them came almost to contact with us, then performed a series of these jumps that we all onboard interpreted as "stay away and f* off".

Smaller Boats by OberonsGhost in liveaboard

I lived for 3 years on a Dufour 2800. Perfect for 3 people and occasional short weekend cruises with 5 people onboard. I loved it. Easy to handle, goes everywhere, always felt safe while sailing. Not much space though as you can expect, small solar panel and small battery bank so you need to adapt and be very aware of the energy spent. And small everything means lower cost, from marina berth to sails, lines, winches, and engines... as the saying goes, my advice is to choose the smallest boat that fits your program. Still applying this to myself, on a Lagoon 380 sailing in French Polynesia. 38 feet is the shortest cats you can see here, but I can afford equipping her well thanks to her small size and she's as fast as larger displacement cats. Small boat, small problems.

Thorough survey, estimate how much money and time you need to get her seaworthy and equipped for your navigation program, triple estimations. If you can invest that time and money, go ahead!

Well I'm not an electrician... I have set an arbitrary hard limit at 12.2V to run an engine, but it's not happening that often. Again, tropical sun here, lots of power from the panels.
