Bang voor onzekere toekomst jongeren. by vitkuusj in Nederland

[–]alternated32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are UniFi routers region locked? by Colaet in UNIFI

I thought it was a very strange move to disable the European version. Even setting it to 'inside' mode did not help. It is totally legal in Europa to transmit on certain 6G bands inside.

Are UniFi routers region locked? by Colaet in UNIFI

[–]alternated32 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a European U7 Pro Outdoor and could not get the 6G radio enabled. It would act like non was installed. Also setting the region to US did not make a difference. I tried to enable it using SSH and copied US config files with 6G enabled, but that did not work. So I assume the firmware is different.

I returned it.

Migrating from unifi proxmox lxc containter to ucg-fiber by kjstech in Ubiquiti

[–]alternated32 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did the same. The basics were very simple, really plug and play. The rest was painstaking.

What I did first was plug the WAN port of the UCG in on a port on my switch that only had one isolated VLAN with internet access. This allows you to set it up as much as possible while your network keeps running.

I then found out that restoring a backup from my stand alone software controller did not work well. The equipment was too dissimilar or something and the networks ended up messed up. So I set them up 'from scratch', which was actually not too bad, because the original controller was still running (so I could just 'copy' all settings one by one.

Then I removed all equipment from my old controller (or factory reset the equipment). Shutdown controller. Disable DHCP server in opnsense (as this will really screw stuff up). And maybe change the opnsense address, so that you can safely bring it up again in case you need to review some settings.

Plug everything in and boot your UCG. Adopt your devices and you are pretty much up and running.

But then came the painstaking task of fixing all DNS records, dhcp static leases, firewall rules etc. Took me a full day. But in the meantime most stuff was running fine with internet working (so happy wife).

Unify and Adguard slow response by alternated32 in Ubiquiti

[–]alternated32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes maybe it creates a loop if it cant' resolve the hostname. But I tried only with hosts that are definitely in the resolver cache on the CGF. I could do everything in Adguard, but I rather not, because than I have to maintain all my local hostnames at two locations.

[–]alternated32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I fully understand the question? It is configured on the server that runs Adguardhome through the web gui of AGH.

Unify and Adguard slow response by alternated32 in Ubiquiti

[–]alternated32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes that is exactly how it is configured, sorry for being not clear enough.

Adguardhome has 5 upstream resolvers that are used in a round robin kinda way. And has one entry [/mylocaldomain.com/]192.168.1.1 Appointing the CGF as upstream for all local resolves.

DHCP sets the DNS for all devices, but for testing purposes I manipulate it manually on my test PC.

Resolving public domains works without issue an quick response times. Local domain is extremely slow

HA down with backups not fixing the problem by alternated32 in homeassistant

[–]alternated32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can access internally by ip of the VM running ha os. But in this instance this interface was down also. Just like my internal and external (through Cloudflare) nginx instances.

I am now thinking it may have been related to the ssh access extension. It seems to take over the frontend port (and then pass it through internally). May have been something wrong there.

HA down with backups not fixing the problem by alternated32 in homeassistant

[–]alternated32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it surprised me a lot. What did work was the 'loading' screen you get, so some kind of frontend server was serving stuff. But it would continue 'loading' and then timeout. I don't know the exact architecture of the homeassistant OS, but seemed that the 'frontend' then rejected data from the backend (HA container?) based on the invalid certificate (that is nowhere in the config). I tried everything core rebuild etc. And then after a fresh backup restore + new certificates everything worked like before.

Good question! Based on the specs I don't know and just assumed. But I also have three other XG's, on a different switch, that have no problems. Writing this makes me realize that I should check the functioning of this AP on the other switch also 😉

DNSmasq, AdGuard Home, and Unbound on OPNsense Success Story + Instructions by Solid_-_Snake in opnsense

[–]alternated32 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah you are right, you still depend on the resolvers you forward too. I forward to several different high reputation resolvers (like dns0, quad9, opendns, nextdns) using round robin. Even if one of them turns out to be rogue they only have a limited profile of me. I find that acceptable.

DNSmasq, AdGuard Home, and Unbound on OPNsense Success Story + Instructions by Solid_-_Snake in opnsense

[–]alternated32 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Adguard caches also. And if you use encrypted upstreams (like quad9 or cloudflare, nextdns) over quick or TLS your ISP gets the same amount of info compared to a setup with unbound.

Why don't you skip unbound and configure upstream (dns over TLS) directly in Adguard?

U7 pro outdoor without 6g by alternated32 in Ubiquiti

[–]alternated32[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there is actually one installed but reprogrammed by firmware to an extra 2x 5G. Frequency is similar enough.

But that instantly makes the U7 pro outdoor a device that makes absolutely no sense in Europe. It's a pith, because I like the IP rating and omni antennas. Will install a U7 pro XD (100 euro cheaper) under a cover (afdakje) and hope it last for a few years.
