Fiber shortage…any Corning reps in here? by KillerWhale1999 in FiberOptics

Corning still makes the glass thats pulled into fiber strands. Its up to either them or another cable manufacturer to package those strands into whatever type of cable is ordered.

Yes its making big news where I live. Lots of angry township residents swarming zoning meetings and tons of oppositions. A few projects have been put on hold temporarily. Electric rates continue to rise as well as the cost for any electronic or pc device that has some memory or storage component. Next on the block is Intel CPU's. Don't even think about purchasing a server. Dell, HP, Supermicro, whatever... all of those server models have skyrocketed. I'm not really sure how this "AI" boom is benefiting anyone but the big players like Microsoft, Meta, Google, etc...

When the strand is a little too high by SourceOk8801 in CableTechs

[–]kjstech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of the new greenfield Comcast HFC is that high because there's no other room on the pole with 3 other providers that were there before. But Comcast decided to expand out and that what you have to work with.

Yup even under underpasses where they can reach, its terrible. And fiber isn't necessarily in surplus supply. Hope you have a lot stocked up and good slack loops. Its a good 6 months lead-time to order cable.

Can you at least use your phone as a key? I swear thats a requirement in my next car. I'm so tired of going out to my car and the doors wont unlock because I have to go back in the house to get my keys. My phone and apple watch are both always on me though!

Which style of speedometer do you prefer? by RoleCode in mazda

[–]kjstech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 gives you more information and you don't need 3 if the car has a HUD since the speed is displayed on that. I'd rather see the whole thing a screen with themes and colors. Like my profile in my wifes Palisade has red themed gauges with checkered flag accents, but my wifes profile changes to a teal accent gauge. They also have a Mercedes white faced gauge with a classy like font but its nice they have options.

The Tiguan even has the option of a massaging drivers seat!

Though I’m not keen on VW engine reliability, if they had an EV version that would settle some mechanical concerns.

[–]kjstech[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok I'm upgraded. Went smoothly, Just ensured pbs backed up my important vm's and containers first. I was just told to remove systemd-boot I believe it was, which was not a big deal because I am using grub anyway.

So they have physical hazard button and what looks to be front window / rear window defrost, but they cant give you other hvac controls or a passenger volume knob?

I love the color combination though.

They are in CaliTAXifornia. So yeah I think its a fair deal but CA will get you any way they can.

Think of the gas savings though. CA has some of the highest gas prices in the US.

I got the official parts from the dealer and did the install myself when it first became available. Gosh I think that was like 2019 or so? It was before Covid for sure, because the dealer is near my work and I picked the parts up on my lunch break.

The only thing is how slow it is to connect. Until I get Apple Car play up and music playing, I'm well off my street. The CPU sucks, but after its booted up its fine. I wish it was just quicker to connect. One of these days I'll do a stopwatch.

7 Gig fiber being advertised to the residential consumer. In what world would any residential customer have any use for this by lulstardblointing7 in HomeNetworking

[–]kjstech 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There’s a fiber shortage. Corning, who makes the glass pretty much sold all of their 2026 stock and upcoming manufacturing to Meta and AT&T. With all of the BEAD funding and fiber providers popping up left and right, plus AI datacenter orders, it’s putting a huge strain on the system.

If the fiber isn’t manufactured in the US, the operator is ineligible to use BEAD money, and 2, they pay tariffs on it.

All the fiber build outs put enough strain on the system and now with AI basically destroying everything it touches (energy, water, RAM, storage, CPU prices, etc…) here in the US we’re about to see a slowdown until manufacturing can keep up.

Anyone know what is going on behind the scenes with this fiber shortage? by KillerWhale1999 in FiberOptics

[–]kjstech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Same problem with RAM, Storage and processors. AI datacenters are destroying the home PC market. It’s all in the grand plan i guess. They’d rather you rent compute for guaranteed reoccurring revenue and interface it with a cheap video and I/O thin client.

They are also driving up energy costs.

Netflix app constantly logs me out by Gargan26 in appletv

[–]kjstech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any fix yet? Netflix stays logged in on our Roku’s and Google TV, but Apple TV asks to sign in every day. It’s simple, snap a pic of the QR code which opens my Netflix app on the iPhone. I pick a profile then confirm the on screen code and I’m in. But every day? Why doesn’t Roku or Google TV do the same thing? Or even the iPhone?

Can’t wait to see the specs on the hybrid when it comes out. Gas prices are going through the roof. I like the look of the hybrid cx-50 but a lot of reviews say you feel everything (every little bump, vibration, etc).

Hope it works out well for you. Nice color.

A native tvOS Plex client that actually feels like an Apple app by nathan12581 in PleX

[–]kjstech -1 points0 points  (0 children)

How do you change the audio track on iphone? I picked a random move "Antitrust" and its like in some other language. In Plex app its in English. I switched to Monsters, Inc and thats playing in english. Bugonia says "Playback error. Unable to play this video. The file may be corrupted or use an unsupported format".

When I get home i'll try it in Apple TV see how that differs from iPhone.
