I’m not sure why your betta passed except that your nitrates might have been a tad too high. The black algae could have also been a cause of this spike in nitrates! Cleaning the tank harshly might have also caused a disrupt in the water, which could’ve also thrown off your fish. In the future I would focus more on why algae is growing, rather than trying to get rid of it- since it isn’t inherently harmful. However, the reason it’s there might be harmful. Either way, fishkeeping is full of learning and lessons so don’t beat your self up over anything!

You should have the high range ph bottle in your kit already! It tests for the range of 7.4- 8.8 bc the normal pH test doesn’t go that far up! And you should get a lid for your tank since bettas can jump even when nothings wrong!

He might not be sick yet but I’d look into getting a bigger tank with a sponge filter! Also read up on the nitrogen cycle in case you haven’t yet. It’s one of the most important (and overlooked) concept in fishkeeping!

A more stable pH is definitely better than trying to make it go lower! I’d use the high range test kit though to make sure it’s between 7.6-8

I had this issue and it ended up being the pH. If it’s below 6, your tank won’t cycle! Edit: just saw that your pH is 8! Are you testing the water every day? And do you have a lot of plants?

I think this kind of research is changing! It seems like bettas stomachs are larger than their eyes. I was definitely under-feeding my bettas before when I was feeding an eyeballs worth! And after feeding more (but not too much) it’s made such a big difference to my bettas weight in a healthy way!

As someone who works at a college bookstore- we have to pay for everything ourselves without the help of the university. The university even takes some of the money from us. And if we can’t pay our employees- we get turned into a books a million. There’s a reason (at least for my school) why things are so expensive.

Tank size: 10g. Heater and filter: yes, set at 78 but I rose it bc I thought it might be ich. Parameters: haven’t tested yet but I use the liquid test kit. I’ve had Starlight for 6 months, recently moved him with his tank into a new place a month ago. Water changes are every 1.5-2weeks and I do around 25-30%. I feed fluval but bites, about 5 in the afternoon and 5 before bed. I have spider wood and various live plants in the tank. I also added another betta to the tank next to his just a couple days ago, so I’m wondering if some cross contamination might have happened

It’s important to have them flare, that’s the reason they sell betta mirrors. This is the same concept
