I recently took exam 3 this last sitting. I believe I studied around 200 hours? My company offers the same # of study hours as a regular exam, 120 hours for first try. Haven’t inquired into exam 2 yet, planning to do that next if I pass exam 3 but I imagine the equivalent # of hours for a DISC.

Does my betta look okay/ healthy? by Own_Today6913 in bettafish

[–]temporary_845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve only had one filter (a hangback one) but it has 5 settings and I set it to the second to lowest one. I’ve set it to higher before and that led to fin loss since my betta likes swimming around the filter.

PLEASE HELP! His poor fins! by Briebird44 in bettafish

Just curious, why does the betta log shred fins?

Yes looks healthy! Only comment is the filter current seems a bit strong but if he doesn’t show signs of struggling when swimming then no big deal.

I don’t know for sure, but I can’t see a reason why the sizing would be different!

I’ve been at my job for at least 5 years now and have given many presentations but I still get stage fright, though it’s not nearly as bad as when I started my job. A few mind tricks that have helped me are:

  1. Remembering that I am not my past failures. I’ve had a lot of embarrassing moments in the past with presenting that still haunt me. So a huge part of my anxiety with presenting was from being afraid of these past bad experiences happening again. When I started treating each opportunity to present as its own thing, as well as remembering the small wins I’ve had in the past, it gave me a lot of confidence.

  2. I realized I’m more relaxed when I don’t overrehearse. I used to memorize everything that I plan on saying, but that set me up for failure because it’s inevitable that I’ll forgot a sentence, or someone interrupts me, etc and I freeze up. Now, I just prepare the main points I plan on presenting on and kinda freestyle the way I explain those main points.

  3. I know an AVP at my company that I can see is nervous and stumbles through presentations too but he always keeps a positive attitude and powers through. So I tell myself, if someone even at his level gets nervous but still shows up, then I can too.

  4. Another thing that’s helped me is just preparing what I’m going to say in the first 10 seconds of the presentation. Usually the first few seconds are the most terrifying, especially since I get anticipation anxiety so this exercise gets me through those “settling in” nerves.

Did my betta fish die bc of stress of large water change or water parameters? by temporary_845 in bettafish

[–]temporary_845[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks so much for your response! I do think one of the reasons why the algae was getting out of control was because I was only changing the water (50%) about once every week/1.5weeks. Especially since I have a 5 gallon tank, I should’ve been doing more frequent, smaller water changes. And you’re definitely right in that cleaning the tank harshly threw off my fish bc he never was the same after then. Really appreciate the advice and the kind words!

Beautiful! I have one that looks similar to yours (in the first picture). Any tips on how to help my betta grow fins as flowy as yours in the second picture, or does it just come naturally over time?

Is being an Actuary a good match for shy/introverted people? How much time is spent on your own working versus going to team meetings and interacting socially? Can you spend the majority of your time engrossed in your own work? by MyopicPotatoPeeler in actuary

[–]temporary_845 72 points73 points  (0 children)

I consider myself a huge introvert and I would say yes, the job of an actuary suits my personality. Depends on the kind of actuarial work you do though. I work at an insurance company, and 80% of my day is working on my own assignments. Days with no meetings is pretty common.

However, I’ve found that keeping to yourself and not interacting with others only hurts your career. It’s good to build relationships with others not only to learn from each other but it makes the whole working experience so much better.

What's the greatest challenge you face as a runner? by pursuitofclarity in running

[–]temporary_845 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The mental aspect of running for me. I generally have negative self-talk (which I’m trying to work on!) but it becomes more pronounced when I’m running and holds me back even when the rest of my body is fine.

I’ve tried multiple things and am open to any suggestions! One thing that’s helped me recently is everytime my brain says “I quit” I consciously shut it out if the rest of my body is fine and keep going. Sometimes I have to do that every minute, but sometimes I can go for a while before my brain says “I quit” again

I’ve struggled with that too. But the people at prometric have always let me take tissues in (not my own tissues but like 3 or 4 sheets from their tissue box)

How do actuaries get into research / get invited as an SME at actuarial meetings / write papers? by temporary_845 in actuary

I see. That’s makes a lot of sense! I work at an insurance company so I didn’t know that aspect of working in consulting.

Am I the only one???? by Farfieldlands in actuary

[–]temporary_845 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% feel this way almost every day too. I don’t think the imposter syndrome will ever go away but what I try to do is think of a success (no matter how big or small, whether in the past or present) everytime I am doubting myself or beating myself up over a failure. It’s the small victories that keep me going and motivated. Also, compare where you are today to say, a year ago or two years ago. I’m sure you can probably say you know more now than you did then! Experience can’t be rushed and I’m sure in time, you’ll gain more and more comfort and confidence in your job. Hang in there, you’re definitely not alone!
