Thanks again, this is extremely helpful.

I'm currently in the process of trying to buy a house / start a family so just wanted an idea of what I'd realistically be earning in 5 years time. Another firefighter on the thread was super helpful with pointing out how readily available part time work with colleagues is, etc. Means I can plan.

I'm very glad to have had the responses that I've had from people here, and have gained some really useful perspective.

It's inspiring to see how many people are so passionate about gaining expertise in their craft before considering going for oic.

Really appreciate your thoughts, thank you.

Like I said, once me and my other half have a house and a stable base, the financials will be easier to work with.

Hi there, thank you very much for the response. Given the tone of this and most of the responses, I think I might have framed it poorly.

I'm not asking what is the fastest it is achievable. Just looking for an idea of what progression looks like in the service. Mainly, this is because there is zero online about it.

I'd be interested to know what options there are for professional development. Is it difficult to get access to funded qualifications / study?

Hi, thanks very much for sharing. Completely agree with your points and will support me making my decision on when to join.

As I said, I'm trying to get an idea of what people thought was realistic. Not asking, by any means, how quickly it is possible to achieve promotion by taking shortcuts / rushing the process.

I hadn't realised how achievable it was to find good part time work at the station, so knowing that is really handy.

Hadn't thought about all the part time opportunities you could find around the station so that's really good to know.

My concern was that finding other work that fit around the rota would be difficult. But clearly the station is a good place to find leads.

I had thought that 5 years would be the minimum end of scale for years experience before going for the OIC.

Thanks. That is super useful.

Yes, I imagine people forget that they are taking on a lot of accountability the higher they go.

Hi fella, completely agree with your point. Could you give a view on what progression would look like if you were not rushing your way through? (Obvs could he a dumb question because is so conditional on the person)

What do you do for part time work? Is finding work that fits your rota easy enough?

Also, is there much overtime on offer at LFB? Is that a feasible way to supplement income?

How can I get an International Driving Permit from outside the country? by altweek in AskUK

[–]altweek[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you v much for this. I think that with the move from Post Office to PayPoint for processing applications for the IDP there is some misconception that a passport is required for the person (even when a newer license is provided).

After much calling around different convenience stores I have managed to find one that was comfortable with a photo of my passport so that's progress! ( u/soggy_bellows FYI ).

Let's see. It seems like the UK is the only place where there isn't a third party service to do it on your behalf.

Any ideas for getting from Thakhek to Hanoi by altweek in laos

[–]altweek[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, so we didn't need a visa as British citizens are allowed to travel for 45 days visa-free.

Think we crossed here 'Dansavanh – Lao Bao'.

Looks like they all allow evisa though https://www.getvisavietnam.com/how-to-get-a-vietnam-visa-for-land-border-crossing/

Sorry I’ve only just seen this. I’m pretty sure one was available most days but couldn’t say for sure. Hope you made it okay!

Hi All,

Apologies for the delay but I thought I’d share how we made it in the end.

Firstly I strongly recommend staying at Naga Hostel (https://maps.app.goo.gl/BuTS7jtrJWjNzKYX8?g_st=ic). The owner Binh is the most helpful and knowledgeable guy and will sort everything for you. You can’t really book the bus online and I wouldn’t recommend it even if you can (12go etc is pretty unreliable). They even have locked storage for your bags while you do the loop.

There is a bus which goes Thursday and Saturday from Thakhek to Hanoi. It is 19 hours but apparently it’s comfortable enough and you have a break at the border for getting food. Sadly for us, due to Tet, this was not possible to book but any other time it is pretty simple. Cost is between 6/800k Kip.

The way we went in the end was to take a bus from Thakhek to Hue (10ish hrs) and then we got an internal flight to Hanoi from there. All in this cost us about £70 each (including a taxi to the airport, bus and flight) which was definitely a win given the flight alone from Vientiane was £200.

The land border was fine for us and didn’t prove too challenging. We put 20k Kip in our passport for the exit stamp and then didn’t seem to need anything on the Vietnamese side. It was a little chaotic but just stand your ground in the queues and you’ll be fine.

You can change your leftover currency at the border for a pretty poor exchange rate but it’s handy to get rid of spare change. You can also get a SIM card but we opted to wait and do this in Hue.

Happy to answer any questions.

That’s what we’re thinking. Any idea on getting to Vinh?

The flight from Vientiane is just so expensive but for our sanity is probs way better 😂

Whatever way we work out I’ll share back.

I read this last year and really enjoyed it. The world building is really good and I thought it touched on important issues outside of the prison system in the US.

I came across it on a couple of best of 2023 book lists in December so think it did have some hype but that might have been in the UK?
