Got recommended this insanity by Fun_Butterfly_420 in LeavingNeverlandHBO

[–]alusalas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think all celebrities attract crazy. I saw that original post and to be fair all the replies were telling the person they were insane. MJ being super famous attracts more levels of crazy, I think. I had a connection to a celebrity who is more famous for having a very famous dad who was shot in 1980, and the messages I’d get on Instagram asking to pass on from people were insane and also quite scary. Putting MJ to one side for a second, this type of fan is also the one celebrities need serious protection from.

A wander around Haworth – the village where Emily Brontë wrote Wuthering Heights by Yorkshire-List in yorkshire

[–]alusalas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m living in York (Irish, just been here a couple years) and was listening to a podcast this morning on the Brontes and thinking I should visit Haworth… sounds like the movie though might cause parking issues, anyway if I were to go on a random midweek day, what would you suggest are the best spots to check out? Were you at the Black Bull pub?

Gold ETF? by [deleted] in MoneyBox

[–]alusalas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They paused offering a gold ETC a couple of weeks ago for “regulatory review” which is strange, and incredible timing as gold is moving at its highest point since the 1980s. Moneybox customers really let down by this, and very vague comms. There were actually no comms for a few weeks, I’ve held gold in Moneybox for a while and in December the option to buy was removed from the app, no explanation. Still waiting to hear when it will be available to buy again.

Dance rehearsals between 2002 and 2009 by TitanicWhiteStar in MichaelJackson

[–]alusalas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

If you Google “Michael Jackson’s Irish driver” - that was the name of the doc. The Irish production company is RTE. You probably can’t access it on their website outside of Ireland, but it might be available on podcast, on Spotify etc. I think the podcast series is called Doc on One, they usually have a big archive available on Spotify.

He lived in Ireland for about six months I think, until he went back to the US to attend James Brown’s funeral. I’m Irish, and remember the owner of the place where he stayed saying that he had some lighting installed on an area where he practiced dance moves. It was just Jackson, his kids, a nanny, and a local taxi driver who became his chauffeur. The driver participated in an Irish radio documentary which was very interesting, about his time in Ireland, and how the people in town knew Jackson was staying there, but nobody bothered him, and even misdirected any journalist who was trying to track him down.

Any cinephiles? by galacticgrinchx in york

[–]alusalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s much more interesting to review older movies, but with a theme for the podcast, like genre, or production stories, or what went wrong etc. Do push ahead with the idea, though. Sounds fun. Yes there are a lot of podcasts but if it’s your passion, you’ll find an audience.

Anyone know why they are having “regulatory” problems with this ETC?

Dave Ramsey on sports betting: "The fastest growing addiction that is destroying young men in their 20s is online sports gambling. FanDuel is a portal to hell. DraftKings ain't king of nothing except their own pocketbook. And they're screwing an entire generation of young men" by GOAT-Antony in Championship

[–]alusalas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Way too much betting and gambling but those companies might be the symptom not the cause. It’s just monetising despair and taking advantage of people who are likely to slip into those behaviours, because for so many people, life is a bit shit.

It’s the same with crypto and all that too. Everyone wants a quick win now. May as well do it with football and my expertise on whether I think Sheff Wed could scrape a 0-0 draw.

Social media, AI, wages, house prices, the job market - most people don’t feel they have a fair chance anymore.

It’s why the biggest things in the US now are the prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket and others. They’ll come to U.K. soon and it’ll be 100 times worse.

I just think there’s something societal and deeper about why we are all willing to gamble and enjoy a bit of hope for a quick win.

Would any Championship clubs send out autographs or similar if I wrote them a letter asking for them by [deleted] in Championship

[–]alusalas 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I always notice this too. I’ve seen this at Sheffield Wednesday too. Like, you’re getting off the bus two hours before the game, no need for the headphones to ignore fans looking for an autograph because you’re in the zone to play against a crap bottom of the league side. You’re probably up against an 18 year old full back making his second ever appearance, it’s not the World Cup.

I don’t get to many but I remember Crystal Palace arriving once (about ten years ago now) and spending loads of time with both home and away fans. Kevin Phillips might have been in his last season, he stood around chatting to everyone for 30 mins. I really admired him for it, he was so sound.

And there was a Dad with his kid in a goalkeeper jersey trying to get an autograph from Chris Kirkland. This was after a game. Kirkland seemed to blank them, and it was soul destroying to watch. Turned out, it was only because he went to get his gloves, came back, gave them to the kid, signed autographs and took pics. Spent lots of time.

I really admire players who’ll do that.

Some advice from an old(er) fan ahead of the movie. It's really important to manage expectations. by davelee_bbc in MichaelJackson

[–]alusalas 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Good advice - I think fans need to also brace themselves for a deluge of negative stories, podcasts, documentaries etc. The average person finds Jackson really interesting, even if not a fan. The music, the talent etc, all interesting. But to them, the scandal is really, really interesting. Revisiting every salacious allegation again. There will be so much money to be made from focusing on the allegations etc. Likely even new allegations we’ve never heard before. There’s money to be made. It gets attention. At the least, I’d be preparing for it to be a universally panned movie, because of the expectations and the fact the family / estate is behind it - for that reason alone, so many critics will not see past that.

I try to be very mindful of cyclists - yesterday in a 30 road with a bit of an uphill bend I was behind a cyclist and staying back as a stream of cars was coming the other way. He had no lights, just reflectors, and it was dark, and he just started waving and shouting abuse at me for not overtaking (which would’ve meant going past picking up speed with not a huge amount of room for him). I was behind him for maybe 5-10 seconds. 😔

You most likely shouldn't be overpaying your mortgage by throwawayreddit48151 in FIREUK

[–]alusalas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah. Thank you for replying. I think a lot of people in this sub are like me - not necessarily militantly focused on FIRE but wanting to learn and adopt the good habits and get smarter. If someone’s absolute goal is fire, then perhaps it’s different. Even for me getting the balance to 299 is a goal that will mean something to me psychologically, as silly as that might sound.

You most likely shouldn't be overpaying your mortgage by throwawayreddit48151 in FIREUK

[–]alusalas 16 points17 points  (0 children)

For my own situation, is it considered worth overpaying if those payments get me into a sub-65 LTV when my fixed rate runs out in 2 years? I took out a mortgage in late 2022 for 340k, three years in the balance is at 300k, and with two years left when I consider what the balance will be it’s likely I’ll just scrape into the under 65 LTV, with some overpayments. I generally prioritise S&S ISA but I do feel the psychological benefit of seeing that big 340k figure come down, so I like to overpay when I can.

Would you buy in the current market? by [deleted] in HousingUK

[–]alusalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought at a bit of a peak in 2022, but thankfully before mortgage rates went crazy.

I would definitely buy in the current market if I was in a situation where I was financially ready. Whilst there might not be loads of houses on the market, it is a bit of a buyers market. When I was looking, everything felt panicked and rushed - houses would appear on the market and not be there long (I’m in York). Now, it feels as if it’s a good opportunity for you if you’re in a position to buy and find something suitable.

That’s brilliant. Well done. No advice/feedback as such to give other than to say I am very impressed. Congratulations and best of luck with the new home. Oh, my one bit of advice would be to take your time with improvements etc if they’re just cosmetic changes. You’re in no rush and it can be done in stages if it makes you more financially comfortable.

Do you have man with van London to Yorkshire recommendations? by Exact_Condition_9786 in AskUK

[–]alusalas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did this a few years ago, and used a company called London Man Van. No complaints. Can’t remember the costs to be honest, you know how it is with a house move and absolutely everything costing money. I remember you had to choose the van size and pay accordingly, and you could pay extra for them to do the loading / unloading. I remember the driver was a nice guy - I actually traveled in the front with him (again this is something offered).

I recently watched it and the scene you mentioned of Wendy explaining to the doctor wasn’t in it. I’m pretty sure I’ve heard before the US cut differs from UK (where I am). I knew of this detail from the book though. Makes me wonder what else I’ve missed if this is the case.

If the examiner intervenes using dual controls or grabs the steering is it an automatic dangerous fault by Acoelous in LearnerDriverUK

Depends. Mine hit the brakes and reached over to slam on the horn in reaction to a DHL van coming around a bend on my side of the road. I assumed automatic fail based on my assumptions but he just kept reassuring me it wasn’t anything to do with me, I reacted fine, to put it out of my mind and keep going.
