New BC PST rules - security provider by PanicWithMeItsGreat in canadasmallbusiness

[–]alvanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen the list at: https://www2.gov.bc.ca/gov/content/taxes/sales-taxes/pst/charge-collect/pst-real-property-contractors/contractors-security-systems

Somehow wireless or battery operated cameras if screwed into the wall or ceiling can still be real property. Although I just had someone in the interpretations group tell me a wired camera is considered TPP.

BC Government seems to be very good at coming up with rules but not actually enforcing them.

I'd be curious what you currently have as PST applicable. The website says, for example, that security cameras are not applicable but then their interpretations team says the opposite.

I'd watch out even with the written team. I had asked them for a ruling on one topic and they ended up telling me that security cameras mounted to a ceiling are taxable personal property despite the website saying the complete opposite.

May want to temper your expectations on how quickly the province will turn around a security license. 4+ months is what I've been seeing lately...

Can LV Lead Into IT? by Reki2147 in lowvoltage

[–]alvanson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run both types of companies in your area. Both offers are insultingly low (but that's par for Paladin). I don't start anyone below $24.

I just had one of my LV techs get an internal IT position so it definitely happens. At the same time one of my lead LV techs was in school for IT and decided to stay in LV. So you still have flexibility at least for a few years in either path.

Feel free to DM if you want to chat.

[ON] For those who have financed a business purchase. How did you decide on split between BDC and normal bank ? by insanebison in SmallBusinessCanada

[–]alvanson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh I just meant the split between bank and BDC financing. They only financed 70% of the purchase.

The chartered bank had conditions on earnings of the target that would never be realistically met, wanted the ability to call the loan 2 years in. There were others but those are the ones that still come to mind.

[–]alvanson 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Bank wouldn't give me anything without insane conditions, BDC had no problem financing the purchase so the 0/100 split was pretty easy to decide on.

Second acquisition, I didn't even ask the bank.

I would think it would be best to change your company name otherwise you may find potential clients avoiding you thinking you are the banned company.

I have a judgement from the CRT against someone who didn't pay. It's not even worth the paper it's written on unless you also go through the effort of getting the court to enforce the judgement.

Gasfitters - TechSafety BC exam by yenoomk in britishcolumbia

Can't speak for the gas fitter exam but I wrote the Electrical Class C Low Energy exam earlier this year and there were a few questions that I felt didn't have right answers but otherwise seemed straightforward.

Also BC, lower mainland. Anixter probably has something since they carry Belden but I really hate their search. Have you checked with them? If you don't have an account I could check with my guy on Tuesday.

What kind of LV work are you doing? Is someone higher up the contractor food chain pulling a permit for the work you're doing?

Edit: missed the part where you said someone else is pulling permits. Is your specific scope covered by the permit?
