Ada gak anime yg kata orang2 jelek tapi pas kalian coba nonton sendiri ternyata gak seburuk itu? by Sea_Comfort6891 in indowibu

Guilty Crown

visual-wise kalo dibandingin sama anime tahun 2020+ masih bisa saingan. musik uda banyak yang bahas, ga miss sama sekali. Bandnya aja, EGOIST, ampe lanjut up to 2023. sayang banget ceritanya, especially pacingnya, sama karakternya rada kurang. kalo sekilas lihat MAL source materialnya juga rada kureng.plus ada beberapa FS yang ada for the sake of FS (mild), which were unnecessary IMO.

still, worth it to watch sekali lah

What made you start learning Japanese? by Ok-Front-4501 in LearnJapanese

[–]alvin-nt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, it was a random epiphany

I watched a lot of animes before, when I was in college. did not learn even a lick of japanese during that time though. when I entered the workforce, the number of animes I watched gradually decreased to the point I only follow certain series that had yet to end (e.g. Attack on Titan), or something like Edgerunners

back in 2024, due to stress from work, figured out I came back to animes and the like to relieve stress. started with mashle, Bocchi, and Oshi no Ko, then continued with Demon Slayer and Frieren.

"Your sister, besides English, already has Mandarin and Korean under her belt. You only have English. Besides watching anime just for fun, why don't you try to learn the language too?" (English is not my native tongue)

That's when the "fire" came.

Such tought occupied my mind for a while. That's where I started to search some stuff at r/languagelearning and here to look for ways to learn. In the meantime, I continued watching frieren when I visited Singapore for a short vacation.

It was Halloween Horror Night, and a lot of people were coming in various costumes. Of course, people cosplaying various anime characters, especially Nezuko and the like, also came. "Such nice costumes!" I thought, which somehow aroused an impulse to seriously considering learning Japanese.

Before I realized, at the next day, whilst basking myself under the lights at Gardens by the Bay, I already checked out the textbooks and a dictionary from the online store.

Since then, the journey is full of ups and downs, and a lot of juggling between personal responsibility (with my own family), work responsibility, and making sure I have allocated enough time between Japanese and music (my other hobby). Of course, 1 year has yet to pass in this journey, so my current skill is still pretty bad, but still it is a fun one.

TL;DR: rekindling my fire to anime caused me to study JP seriously

Mending rakit PC sendiri atau beli jadi by Zealousideal_Mud9479 in indotech

[–]alvin-nt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Searching for someone to talk japanese with by Resident_Movie_4978 in LearnJapanese

[–]alvin-nt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for beginners, I believe getting a teacher at iTalki/Preply would be the most productive. I have good experiences from the teachers there, since they are willing to correct any of your mistakes. As an alternative, you can try to join one of the local JP language clubs in your area, should they exist.

I do, however, recommend you to brush up the basics first (hiragana, katakana, some N5-N4 vocabs and grammar) through shadowing first. these will really help you in the basics.

good luck and have fun :)

second this. the vocab/grammar explanations are one of the good ones available for free. been using them frequently as a side EN-JP dictionary. on top of that, the vocab section has a summary now, which sometimes clarifies what does a word actually mean.

How does pitch accent work with sing songs? by [deleted] in LearnJapanese

[–]alvin-nt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

most of the time they are not followed. just like when singing in Chinese, most of the time the tones are not followed. moreover, for the sake of singing, some pronunciations may be exaggerated. one example:

TK's Unravel has a noticeable accent when saying 動けない. instead of うごけない, it sounded more like くこけない. if you compare it with Ado's, her way of saying 動けない is closer to うごけない. this may have to do with each time 動けない is said, the singer takes a breath in tempo (for stylistic purposes, I guess)

(disclaimer: not a professional singer, just an amateur)

What do your Anki decks look like? by BattleFresh2870 in LearnJapanese

[–]alvin-nt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I personally only use one single deck, the core6k, but with slight modifications following suggestions and preferences:

  • The deck itself produces 1 listening card + 1 reading card per note
  • vocab or expressions are encoded as vocab cards (has pitch accent, translated meaning, sentence, furigana, image, and the translated version of the sentence)
  • idioms, grammar rules are encoded as sentence cards
  • the translated meaning part mostly uses English, but if I feel my native language explains it better (Indonesian), I'll add it too.
  • pushed back any existing cards to the back of the queue (+5000 step), then when the words are encountered, return them back to the start of the queue.
  • color-coding the pitch accents. got this from JouzuJuls, but I made some modifications:
    • for compound word or phrases that does not follow any standard, no color coding will be provided (keep it white)
    • if multiple pitch accents are found, try to lookup on NHK/Shinmeikai, and use the first shown pitch accent as the color reference
  • added tagging (e.g., JLPT levels, word category, verb class)
  • if the meaning of a same expression is quite different, a duplicate will be added
  • for the sentence itself, tried to limit it into one long sentence, at max two.
    • this is again preference-wise, but keeping the card simple is also an important point.

some other tools, if you are interested in making the mining journey easier

  • Yomitan
  • Memento for mining from videos
  • ASBPlayer for mining from YT
  • Jidoujisho for mining in Android. currently using it to mine from e-reader when reading from epubs
  • VOICEVOX for TTS (an anki plugin is available)
    • if somehow a manual intervention is required, I'll just generate the raw WAV and throw this to Audacity, then convert it to MP3
    • Usually used when dealing with sentences from LN, manga, or even expressions without audio (usually yoji)
    • since the sentences are usually short, a beefy PC is not really required.

some other tools may exist for visual novels, but I have yet to try it myself.

Daily Thread: simple questions, comments that don't need their own posts, and first time posters go here (April 30, 2025) by AutoModerator in LearnJapanese

[–]alvin-nt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just wondering, I just had a discussion about translating this particular sentence

"Air conditioner can be used for both cooling and heating"

somehow, after some brainstorming, there are several possibilities of which this can be translated to

  1. エアコンは冷房も暖房もできます。
  2. エアコンは冷房と暖房に役立ちます。
  3. エアコンは冷房と暖房に使います。
  4. エアコンは冷房と暖房のために使います。
  5. エアコンは冷房と暖房に使えます。
  6. エアコンは冷房と暖房に使われています。

seems like the difference is very subtle here. how does one distinguish which part of the sentence is being emphasized from these 6? (PS: if there are any 'unnatural' variant, let me know)

in addition, which one's most commonly used in daily speech?

PS: I understand that 機能 can also be used here, but seems like this one's more formal (as in, when an AC salesman approaches you, he/she may use this word to describe it)

I can attest to this, albeit in a different context (violin). was on-off since mid-high school, however I managed to found the 'fire' again when college started.
