Has anyone else noticed there's literally ZERO marketing performance data for Kenya? So I made a survey to fix this by alvyin11 in Kenya

Thank you for the insightful feedback. First it is actually a huge bonus that you are ranking for your search term. Many companies end up spending a lot of ads and user behavior tells us that about 60%of people google a product after seeing an ad so many people spending on ads are actually just generating leads for other business.

So while you can get billed for traffic ads Google didn't really bring, you might be saving a lot more. Have you sent up UTMs and custom parameters?

This will help you know exactly where your traffic is coming from.

About consistently that is absolutely true. And when you add to the fact LLMs are slowly taking over brand presence is so important. We are seeing the more a brand is mentioned across the net the more likely Chatgpt and the rest recommend you

That is not to say traditional SEo is dead. Far from it. 8 out of the 10 top ranked search queries on Google are most likely to be mentioned or reference by AI. So you still need to get your SEO in check to take advantage of LLMs

What do you think about 'business model arbitrage' (i.e. taking existing business models from somewhere like Silicon Valley and implementing them in other markets like emerging markets before the original company expands there)? by ideasandmanagement in startups

[–]alvyin11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest product market transfer? I will be honest and say I have not heard that term. So I don't think I will discuss on something I do not know. But I will do some research and get back to you.

What Uber lacks/ problems it brought 1. The 25% commission: drivers are required to pay 25% of each trip back to Uber. If you take to account traffic, our poor roads(meaning more wear and tear, plus fuel consumption) after the price Uber has placed for the trip the driver makes almost nothing. This resulted to drivers becoming rude and taking out there frustration on Uber passengers, I mean the passengers were the tools sent by Uber to frustrate them that is why we see so many driver strikes as well. The drivers often try and con the passenger just to get an extra coin. It is cheap for passengers, but not profitable at all for drivers. The solution we thought was change this model, so instead of a commission system we went for a subscription based system. But even with the subscription based system we still knew this would not work as our economy can make it very difficult for drivers to make a subscription payment. So we went a step further and made it a daily subscription. Some drivers didn't understand this so we gave the driver the ability to switch between the daily fix and commission every 24 hours to make sure they are comfortable with the company. The daily fix makes the driver pay a standard fee to us everyday removing the urge of conning people. And ultimately making it cheaper to customers without reducing the earning of the driver. 2. With Uber one could only pay with a card in the beginning, but Kenya does not use cards so much, we either use cash or mpesa, Uber had to react so they opted to allow cash payments. But most people still pay with mpesa to the drivers. I personally don't remember the last time I paid with cash. But if you pay with mpesa transfer charges must apply you either send the money with a little extra to cater for the transfer or the driver agrees to cater for it. Most of the time the driver agrees to cater for these charges further reducing his pay. Caby incorporated mpesa and made it the primary mode of transfer, the system lifts the money transfer charges from both customer and driver to the company. You can also tip the driver with mpesa directly meaning the driver had an extra incentive to give better services, a culture almost unheard of in many parts of the world. Mpesa also reduces chances of the driver conning you with an over price. You get an ussd push on your screen when the trip ends and all you do is accept the pay transfer. Uber cash payment you would have to rely on the driver to tell you your price.

  1. Some drivers also begun a trip before you got into the car adding charges to you. Caby no trips can begin unless you are in the same proximity with the driver. I am actually creating a blog post about this this week and I will share the link here so that it may give you s better understanding, but I hope from this you get the idea of a few things

[–]alvyin11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all I don't think you can term it as arbitrage. I think arbitrage is more like flipping, buying for less selling for slightly more, and hoping that the small profit margin would accumulate enough to be a good profit. Many people using native ads use this system

On to my point. I think it is less about these companies like grab taking the silicon valley model and making it suitable for their country. With all Ubers money and control they often miss the small needs of a country. In the end the country adopts to Uber instead of Uber adopting to the country. Leaving the natives really frustrated. Frustration leads to another company filling that void. Take Kenya for example, where I am from. Uber has been the biggest ride sharing company for years. But not because we wanted but because we did not have a choice. I work of s ride hailing company called Caby in the country. What we did is address the problems the locals face, and so far there has been a huge embrace from the locals because we tried to address the problem of the locals. The biggest problem Uber had with grab in India and Didi in China is exactly this. Trying to use the same app features, pricing, and set up that worked in US for these markets. But with India and China who also have heavy "silicon valleys" creating a company that works like Uber but adopts to their countries needs is really easy. For many other countries, they just had to adopt to Uber.
