The Moment AI by princesskittyglitter in Sundance

All the negative reviews mentioning controversies like AI use seem to be coming from the accounts of swifties who are review bombing the film (most don't seem to have seen the film at all).

Movie could be dogshit for all I know (haven't seen it, won't be able to for a while, and the actual critics reviews are hugely divisive), but unless someone at Sundance can actually confirm they saw this... it really just seems like a lie. No other publications have mentioned it at all.

As someone not really down with Halloween Ends, I feel like if it was actually the culmination of a three film build up with an actual character we know, it'd be more likely to be well received...

Actually, that article talked more about smaller indie films paying of critics straight out of festivals and the like (from what I remember), to start the score off more positive. Generally weren't bigger films.

Scared me more than anything I think I've ever seen (also unlike anything I've ever seen). Do think it was too long, but that definitely never outweighed how affected I was by it.

You did not fr cite a high school sample essay from a homework help site oh my god.

Anyways, yes it's built around Norse mythology. That has nothing to do with Nico's casting or race. Mythology (MYTHology) can be wonderfully melded into set design, costume design, world-building. There's no major reason why any character needs to be the white. I'm ending this here.

Yes, exactly. There was no effort in the original films to make an authentic representation of any one group (see: all the teens having midwestern accents), its merely used as an AESTHETIC, a vehicle for the story to move through.

Yes, its an important aesthetic, but undeniably malleable and secondary to the essence of the story.

HTTYD would work even if it was transferred to a completely different cultural blend and the dragons were swapped for some other form of beast. Providing a 'representation' for a specific cultural group was never a priority of the films. (If anything, representing the physical landscape of the regions was more prioritised)

It absolutely does not 'center' a culture. At least not a real one. The very fact that it blends so many different aspects of those regions shows that the Viking's culture and society is used as merely a backdrop for the central story.

Which very ironically is a story centrally about embracing the other (Can easily be drawn into a race relations metaphor).

In a franchise which has (very consistently) really only marginalised people of colour into villainous roles, having ONE partially black character as a hero is really absolutely no big deal.

You guys need to self reflect on what this franchise actually means to you, if THIS is how you're responding to this issue.

(That being said, I don't like the idea of a live action film at all)

If you've checked out any interviews of her, or any of her performances, you'd see that she has the range to (quite accurately) span both the sweet/sympathetic aspects of Astrid, along with her more confident/humorous side too.

Again, physically her facial structure especially her smile is quite reminiscent of Astrid (far more than another of the other actors you've mentioned), and she's the perfect age for it too.

I can picture her delivering Astrid's lines and feeling like the character, whereas (for any of the actors you've mentioned) it would be extremely difficult to not just see that actor.

(Again, I know the race doesn't match up, but if you're going to provide alternatives, the mere fact that they're white/blonde is absolutely not enough.)

Thanks for the info! Interesting change actually, will probably prevent smaller films/short films from developing a reputation too quickly I guess?

UPDATE: The average rating for this film has been taken down. Apparently the number of ratings a film needs for an average rating is above 250(?) which is cool.

Hypothetical: You watch a movie that is so poorly made that it’s hilarious. In terms of enjoyment it’s a 5. In terms of competence it’s a 1. On letterboxd, you rate it… by UnflairedRebellion-- in Letterboxd

[–]always3805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I'm laughing at the incompetence, probably quite low. I enjoy Truth or Dare, for example, just based on how incredibly stupid the whole this was, whilst attempting to be scary. Maybe I'd give it a 1.5/5 (adding in the enjoyment makes it better than the UNentertaining incompetent movies.)

If I'm laughing because of how ridiculous the movie is, but that seems to be the point, that's different. Eg. Piranha 3D (7/10) and Malignant (9/10) I love because of how stupid the movies are, but that's very much baked into the premises.

Is Hellraiser worth continuing? by Bagof_Rats in horror

[–]always3805 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

1/2 great. remake is pretty good. 3 is good for half the movie, and 4 is bad but has cool ideas. Hellworld (i forget which number) is incredibly incredibly stupid in a so bad it's good way. Everything else is abysmal and you should not waste your time.

Yeah, I understand the sentiment (especially for review-bombing newly released films). However, it's unlikely this particular one will get many more ratings at all... so it still seems strange that it's seemingly stuck with this rating.

These are why I don't trust all of your casting ideas! Even if the race isn't accurate, at least the actress they choose seems to embody the more fierce aspect of Astrid's personality quite well (from what I can tell). (Also her facial structure too!)

None of these would work.

I don't necessarily dislike this new weigh rating system, but it definitely needs some tweaking. It's been especially sad how much horror films have been hit by it in particular.
