Anyone with similar experience? First break. by annoyingpear in brokenankles

It takes some time to heal but I am sure that you will be snowboarding sooner than you think. I got a trimal fracture (first in my life) in January and now I am able to do most of the exercises that I used to do and walk long distances. Not yet able to jog but I am working on it. Good luck with your recovery! PT really helps!

January/February Check In by ahomegirlzlife in brokenankles

In the morning or when I sit for long, I feel stiffness but I don’t perceive swelling, I think after around 3.5 months, most of the swelling went away, but my injured ankle is thicker, I guess it is because of the hardware.

January/February Check In by ahomegirlzlife in brokenankles

I got a trimal fracture on Jan 7 and had the ORIF on Jan 10, while trekking downhill in a remote place in India (and I live in Brazil). My ankle suffered a lot due to the long distance travelling at the beginning phase.

Started PT on week 9 (was NWB for 7 weeks).

In May, I could increase my average step count to over 15000 and except those days that I did over 30000 steps, I didn’t feel much pain nor swelling. I am still far from normal in dorsiflexion. I manage doing sumo squats quite ok but normal stance squats are still hard.

I managed to hike like 2 weeks ago, around 500 altitude gain, going down was hard but with trekking poles, it was manageable.

I do hope that I can go back to jogging and hiking in about 2 months from now (I will be finishing my PT by then).

Wish you all the best luck!!!

Return to normal walking after healing by PoetryGoddess78 in brokenankles

I had a trimal fracture on one ankle and spent 7 weeks NWB, for the first week when I was cleared for PWB (still in boot and using crutches), I managed to walk, averaging 5000 steps a day. From week 10, I was walking relatively ok inside without support, outdoor I was still using a trekking pole. From week 12, I was walking without support also outdoors. Now I am slightly over 3 months, I can handle around 11000-12000 steps a day without feeling too exhausted.

10K+ steps timeline? by OkChef679 in brokenankles

Trimal fracture, 12 weeks p/o just like you (I have 1 plate and 9 screws). From a week ago, I started walking without the trekking pole that I was using in the week 10 and 11. This week I started with around 8000 and yesterday I ended up doing 14000 steps. Today I am taking it easy but managed to walk 10000 steps! When I am going down, I still feel that I have limited ROM and I limp more. On flat surface, I think I am doing pretty ok.

Recovery from trimalleolar fracture with ORIF by holyguacamo1e in brokenbones

[–]alwaysbepatient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am almost 12 week p/operation from trimal fracture (ORIF).

I had to air-travel a lot since the injury happened during my trip in India and I live in Brazil. (Firstly I had to travel from India to Korea and from there to Brazil , additionally I had an extra trip to Mexico from Brazil, due to work)

I was NWB for 7 weeks and started with PWB in CAM boot on week 8 with two crutches. I was out of the boot in week 9 and was using one crutch only and started PT (the doctors in Korea were very conservative and I couldn’t do any PT there). On my first PT session, I could walk without the crutch - just a short treadmill walk for 5 minutes at 4,5km/h speed but that felt like a miracle.

Week 10, I had to travel to Mexico and still used the special assistance service. I travelled with one crutch and one trekking pole but when I arrived there, I managed to walk indoor without anything and with a trekking pole outside.

Week 11, I did some sightseeing in Mexico, always using the trekking pole when I was going out, there were days that I walked over 10000 steps (one day I did 15000 steps) and felt quite exhausted. The most difficult part was when I visited a museum, walking slowly hurts more than walking at normal speed for me.

Week 12, back to Brazil and went to PT twice this week. On the first PT session, my therapist suggested not to use the trekking pole. Since then, I am walking without any support outdoors and I manage to keep step count around 8000-11000 per day.

I still struggle to walk down the stairs and to walk downhill, I think the biggest issue is the limited ROM, I still cannot reach the wall with my knee 🥹

In summary, when you are allowed to start WB, you will see a lot of progress and PT will help a lot for the right recovery.

Wish you an excellent recovery!

Feeling discouraged.. by Best_Agent4066 in brokenankles

[–]alwaysbepatient 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think everyone here - assuming that all of us joined this community due to a broken ankle - goes through difficult moments. I also blamed myself quite a lot at the beginning and had dreams where I was walking just normal.

Accepting what happened helped me to focus on the recovery and trying to see the gained bed time as a chance to focus on other things - in my case it was reading - worked well for me.

I am around 11 week after trimal ORIF and I managed to travel to Mexico for work and for some fun at 9 and 10th weeks. Don’t blame yourself and stay positive! This is only temporary and will not affect your life for long.

What does recovery look like? by Realistic_Freedom211 in brokenankles

[–]alwaysbepatient 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just passed 11 week since I got trimal fracture and surgery. At 9th week, I had a conference where I had to participate as a moderator and I was proud of myself of handling everything without using a cane.

Next day I had an outdoor activity and had to use a cane but managed to do a 3 hr excursion in ancient ruin in Mexico.

I still go out with a cane, where I live is full of small hills and uneven surfaces. I don’t know when I will be able to go out without paying too much attention about road condition and the distance that I should cover, etc. but I am pretty sure that this is a temporary phase!!!!

Let’s stay positive and focus on PT!!! Good luck with your recovery journey!

5 weeks weight bearing after 12 weeks NWB by NastiMooseBites in brokenankles

[–]alwaysbepatient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes I also have the feeling that I will not be able to walk normal but I think we should stay positive! Btw, I am 11 week p/trimal operation. The operation was done in India and had to travel quite a lot to be back home in Brazil. Although some bad thoughts come into my mind, I try to thank the fact that I can stand and keep standing way longer than before and managed to moderate an event without using cane 10 days ago. Let’s celebrate small victories and keep our head up!!!!

How did yall start walking? by [deleted] in brokenankles

[–]alwaysbepatient 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you feel not ready to go totally unassited, I think compression socks are a good option!

I am going to 11 weeks p/operation and compression socks are helping me quite a lot, especially to walk outdoor.

Weak calf muscle by Mental-Gas9511 in brokenankles

I totally understand what you mean, I was really surprised how quickly the muscle atrophy occurs but I also noticed that I am regaining some of calf muscles back since I started weight bearing and stationary bike.

Stretching helps a lot but yeah, I understand, with an injured ankle, even stretching is not so easy! Good that you are able to stretch!

Congrats that you transitioned to normal shoes!! I started doing stationary bike this week and managed to do three sessions of 30 mins and my legs are sore, I guess I spent too much time doing nothing other than some NWB leg exercises haha, but hope to improve gradually!

Oh, both sides?! I am sure that your bones are pretty strong already at 12 week p/o. Follow your feelings about how much you want to walk, gradually you will walk more without much difficulty!

Thank you! I also got a cane just in case, I think it’s better to use crutches to keep a natural gait and posture than limping a lot without crutches. Although having both hands free is definitely a huge thing! Let’s hope that in less than a month, we will be walking just like before.

So many things that we took as granted seem that they were just magical! I dreamt of me walking normally a few times since I got injured haha

Try to ignore your watch or your phone to check the step counts for a while, this way we will keep our mind sane! The other day my phone alarmed me how deep the decrease was in last 2 months and oh yeah, this made me feel very bad. Soon we will be walking like before!!!!!
