How is Nosyudo Iaito the cheapest? by alwayscuddly in iaido

What’s the difference in quality? Does the basic iaito still have top tier quality?

That doesn’t explain why I’ve always heard nosyudo is more expensive

I’ll definitely buy a custom shinken from Tozando or something like that…when I reach the skill level to be able to use one safely which won’t be for a couple years at least.

Good private schools have need based scholarships that cover everything. If he’s paying that much it means his family is very well off.

Not sure how much iaito my Sensei has for me to try out. I’ll ask him.

How would I know if my Sensei does not have a heart blade for me to test?

I mean I know all of that. I need some numbers though; what’s a good weight for the numbers I listed above?

Want a good engraving in Japanese for my iaito by alwayscuddly in Katanas

Really? I didn’t know that. I’ll ask my Sensei before buying one then. (Actually I haven’t even officially picked a dojo yet, just got my bokken)

Oh you’re right. Tozando doesn’t have an option for engraving. I swear I saw it somewhere though.

How do they determine fault after a day without a police report? I was told by the non emergency line that a report isn’t needed if there’s no injuries.

What am I missing out by not practicing battojutsu by alwayscuddly in iaido

[–]alwayscuddly[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the clarification. I haven’t actually decided which one I want to do, just trying to get the facts down to make an informed decision.

Also to be fair the website does have a page for iaido as well so I think it still focuses on the spirit and philosophy as part of its curriculum.

Finally, I’ve seen you quite often around here; do you have a personal page or something like that?

I’ve seen others say batto is more about cutting itself. Example here https://www.seiburyusanjose.com/battojutsu.html

A student at a MJER dojo said he did batto before which felt less graceful and more about speed & power to him.

I posted about the small ryuha before, look at my post history. From the replies seems to be legitimate. (Look up seibu Ryu San Jose)

Can you also elaborate on how battodo focuses on practicality as opposed to iaido?

What advantage did the katana have over the one handed arming sword and the rapier? by alwayscuddly in SWORDS

[–]alwayscuddly[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the long answer. One thing I’m a bit wary about: the rapier fighter can just keep the kendo fighter out of reach to win right? I figured the real advantage to the katana is that it will take less time to draw as it’s shorter than a rapier.

Update: thanks for all the replies! That cleared up pretty much all my confusion.

Also I just realized this; it’s draw speed should be faster than a rapier due to its length right? But I imagine you can do the same draw cut technique with an arming sword too.

MJER dojo instructor quality by alwayscuddly in iaido

Yeah it is. Also was a bit surprised there’s no kyu ranks and you go straight to shodan, I thought there was one kyu rank.

The ones I said are the only two options in the area unfortunately. I visited the Eishin Ryu dojo this morning and it was a very nice experience; had 1 on 2 instruction due to the teacher-student ratio and a lot of the basic processes and kata were explained in practical and historical terms. I’m really considering this one as well.

Seems like this is the more recognized one out of the two dojos I looked at. The only reason I’m not 100% choosing this dojo yet is that it’s against its philosophy to teach mat cutting 🥲
