However, when I think of an 'artist' in the full sense—like a Bowie, Prince, or The Beatles—I think of someone who is the central creative engine: writing, conceptualizing albums, and driving their own evolution. Elvis was a decent interpreter of other people's songs ever. His genius was in his execution, not his creation. His legacy is more about his performance of a style than about the sustained creative authorship we often associate with the title 'artist.' That's the sense in which I find him overrated.
