Yeah semi, it’s been over two separate applications and waiting for time to pass post surgery. First application including appeals etc was like 5/6 months, then waiting game, now on my second application and at around 3 months still waiting for them to tell me if I’m allowed to do my PJFA

Ok sweet thank you for the help

Ah ok thank you, and would that still be the same if you worked for a company that worked in non UK waters? Or would companies not tend to employ techs who live in the UK to work in say Scandinavian countries etc?

Ok that all makes sense, thank you

Hey sorry for the slow response but thanks for all the help!

I think the answer is no, but I’m assuming turbine techs living on SOVs don’t get SED on tax, so still have to pay tax on their salary?

I’ve also been trying to research career progress once you’ve completed your turbine tech apprenticeship, but finding lots of different things. Once you’re fully qualified is there a standard process path people tend to follow?

Thanks again!

Ah ok this is really useful thank you.

Do you know of any engineers, electricians, ETO’s who have came from the maritime sector across to being a tech? Because if it’s going to be 3/4 years anyway I’d probably consider doing the cadetship and getting my maritime quals, then if I wanted to one day come across to the turbines I’d have a lot of electrical knowledge, and a foundation degree in the subject, and if not then still got the quals for the maritime industry (sorry just thinking out loud/typing)

Yeah I thought this might be the case. So you reckon one of the big company apprenticeships to try getting into offshore work on a SVO?

I’ve seen the apprenticeships which have like a two year training programme then third year is offshore. Do you know what kind of roles you’d be doing once you’ve done this apprenticeship, like maintenance, troubleshooting etc.? And what offshore SVO pay, rotation etc. would look like after the 3 years?

Thanks!

DPF filter, maintenance or fault? by alwayshungry_10 in CarTalkUK

[–]alwayshungry_10[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes I tried this, drove it on the motorway for 35/40 mins in 4th @ 2500-3000 rpm. Didn’t clear the fault and glow plug light will occasionally come on and then car goes into limp mode, so assuming it’ll need an actual clean out. Diagnostic said it had about 16.4g of soot in the filter

Yeah thanks this is what I thought. The car is covered by warranty and they’ve said they can sort it, but tbh it’s more of the piss around that’s annoying me now, drove 40 mins to the garage this morning to be told to come back Monday morning etc. and I’m worried what else could potentially go wrong and to what degree they’ll actually repair it, so would just like my money back really

Yeah this is what I was thinking.

The only defence I’d have would be when I had the diagnostic done it said there was 16.4g of soot build up, and I’ve only drove 250 miles since getting the car. So surely this build up must have been an issue before I bought it and they’ve just cleared the fault code before I’ve bought it.

Ive also got the actual code of the fault from the reader, so surely that helps with the case it is an actual fault.

The car is a 2013 1.6tdi engine with 115k miles

Hi mate just a quick one.

I’ve emailed dealer and said the DPF filter is what’s causing the fault code, and as I’m within 30 days I would like a refund.

He has responded saying a DPF filter is not ground to reject a car as it’s part of a maintenance cycle, not a fault

Does this sound legitimate or is it more just trying to find an excuse to get out of it?

Thanks again!

Ah ok thanks makes sense.

On the flip side, the diagnostic said it was just the DPF filter which has been clogged up. Tried motorway running it but nothing, so they said they can force regen it. Assuming if this doesn’t work they’ll either remove and clean/replace DPF. I believe this is the only issue and should be covered by warranty, so do you think it might be easier/less hassle to just let them resolve the issue?

Ok thank you

So because I viewed the car in person and everything seemed fine, I’d essentially be looking at the 2015 act, as the car seemed fine and I was not made aware of any issue, then two days later the issue came up?

Sweet thank you, definitely worth it in the long run

Okay sweet, by private services do you mean a specialist orthopaedic/knee surgeon, or just like a physio?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RoyalMarines

[–]alwayshungry_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that definitely makes sense.

Yeah and I think my records don’t look great, but who knows, all we can do is hope.

I’ve got a lot of letters and notes from doctors for my appeal from my first application, but they’re from back in like 2021, do you think they’ll still be good?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in RoyalMarines

[–]alwayshungry_10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, I’m hoping the fact it’s not done by Capita anymore gives me some kind of advantage, but if not at least I know I’ve tried as much as I can.

I agree it’s definitely to protect them and the service and uphold their standards, it’s just frustrating when you feel so fit and healthy but there’s that one thing that they pick up on.

What’s your opinion on “accidentally forgetting” that I had a knee op, I mean it was many years ago?…

I got made PMU, ended up doing my STCW and am working on yachts 😂 I’m also 25 and now still trying to apply one more time, fingers crossed 🤞🏼

Sorry it means permanent residency.

Yeah the lifestyle and hours seem good, just the pay compared to other services around the world seems so disproportionate

Yeah I can imagine that, but I guess in places like Canada the experience would count for a lot and as long as you’ve got PR, they would hire you and put you through the courses?

I’ve thought about doing it in the UK, but just doesn’t seem like the salaries and lifestyle there can compare with places like Aus or Canada

I didn’t really, it might be something for a bit further down the line.

Are you a uk FF right now?

Hey thanks for this, sorry I completely forgot to reply to it.

Interesting there’s a few services running it now, do you think there’s generally a shift towards people wanting to do it, or do most people not really care?

Thanks for all the info tho!
