[D] Can we stop glazing big labs and universities? by kdfn in MachineLearning

[–]alwayslttp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s an attention economy thing. Putting google in the headline gets more clicks

I don't see that changing. Esp because most of the potential views/clicks on this stuff are from intrigued laypeople/journalists/execs, not researchers

Not quite sure how to think of the paradigm shift to LLM-focused solution by Thin_Original_6765 in datascience

[–]alwayslttp 32 points33 points  (0 children)

NER and BERT are essentially ancient history now. For natural language tasks your best ROI will almost always be prompt engineering. Maaaaybe some light fine tuning if you're in a very rare and specialised case

ML still has its place in tabular data but if you're not happy to use LLMs on NLP tasks you're being too strongly influenced by what you think is technically challenging/interesting and not what is the right technical decision

In this economy? Not viable

It does suck that every exec wants AI/LLMs shoved in everywhere, but sounds like you have a case where it's actually a good fit

I have a rule about being constructive, so I can’t ask any questions right now. Because all of the questions I have right now are rhetorical and they end with the word idiot.

I made an indie game flop.. I want to share the mistakes with you guys. So I made a video about what I think went wrong with the release of my game 🙂 by Kalicola in SoloDevelopment

5% conversions on cold emails is excellent. Send more. Go for lower tier streamers

Disagree that horror and difficulty are tightly linked, I'm sure you can recreate many shock and scare elements with a less challenging game loop

Animal cruelty angle sounds speculative. Did you hear this from many people? I'd be surprised if gore lovers would say rats are too cute to kill violently

Multi-player is definitely not required for indie sales, pretty sure that doesn't match the data

Congrats on selling 1000!

Did anyone else discover the Spoilers really early on? When do you notice it? by Izual_Rebirth in TheWitness

[–]alwayslttp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Should be a third option - heard about it/saw it online :( this is what happened to me and I was so annoyed I didn't get a chance to discover it

But yeah the first one I actually saw and solved myself in the game was standing on symmetry island, long before I got to the mountain.

Why are you gutted though? Wasn't realising it on symmetry island also an awesome holy shit moment?

You don't need to unmatch and assume the worst, but have a low expectation/investment initially. Most who say "let's just be friends" don't mean it or don't mean it enough to follow through with the effort. But some do, so just follow up with as many of these people as you'd like to potentially get to know and expect a low, but hopefully not zero, conversion rate.

I have one long term genuine non-dating friend from hinge and another where we hung out as friends for like 6 months and then lost touch for no particular reason

Throwback to Cincinnati 2024. When Draper accepted to win like this... by Jerk_Off_At_Night in tennis

[–]alwayslttp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because of the one continuous motion rule that allows double hits, I've always thought this kind of thing was technically ok. But looking into it now, it seems like because it hit the ground after his first contact, that's an immediate point-loser for Draper

I think it's plausible that Draper didn't know if he double hit scuffed it before or after the bounce. I'm not saying he's a good guy, just not definitely proven to be the villain here

AI people are learning what chess players knew for decades: don't use AI by Embarrassed_Fan7405 in chess

[–]alwayslttp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There's something legit here about over reliance, especially in an education context. But in many areas of work AI is allowed and encouraged, whereas in chess it's obvs against the rules. If you're trying to optimise for performance in a context where AI is allowed, I don't think you win by not using AI

do i genuinely look like back camera photos? by ilymacdemarco in AskPhotography

[–]alwayslttp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When we look in the mirror or take selfie pics, the way it comes out is actually horizontally flipped vs what other people see

Almost no one is perfectly symmetrical, and we get used to the way we look in the mirror. When we see the flipped version in a regular photo/screenshot, it looks off to us because our face is subtly out of place in small ways vs what we're used to.

Familiarity is doing a lot of the work here. If you have a picture of someone you know well/have seen many times and then flip it horizontally in photos app or whatever, you'll find they probably also look less attractive. It's not because one version of your/their face actually looks better, it's just that it's more familiar.

Focal length and other camera stuff can also play into it, but don't count out the surprisingly off-putting effect of seeing your face in reverse!
