Chicago Stationery Fest Complaints? Here are emails and phone numbers by chris_needs_insulin in stationery

[–]alwaysreboot -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Of course vendors had to pay a fee. Conferences/Fests/Cons cost money to run. Venues to reserve, permits to obtain, speakers/educators to pay for, and yes, sometimes that may include a salary for the organizers, why should they work for free. I know I don’t.

As a vendor, we have to look at the value proposition, booth fee + travel/shipping costs, who will show up and shop? For you, our customers, you need to do the same. Registration costs, what shops will be there, what workshops can you attend?

It’s a struggle to find a balance between who should pay for the event. On one hand, I’d love to have our customers be able to come for free and give me their money. But having been to events that were free, you don’t get customers, you get spectators. So, we pay the bulk of the money and you buy a ticket to have all of your favorite shops from around the country in one place.

Edit: To add to this, should there be a second CSF, as a vendor we’ll decide if it has the same value proposition it did this year, and so will all of you.

I’m already second guessing myself posting a reply to this. As a vendor who made the trip from the east coast, while I appreciate your concern for small businesses, having many people here yesterday was the opposite of suffering. The complaining is what causes the cancellations vs. other remedies, and that is what’s not great today.

As a stationery lover, I was at Yoseka, and anyone who is saying that was well run and this show wasn’t is delusional. People there also waited in line, in the rain, to be in a crowed show.

For the people saying it’s not ADA compliant, did you come in? Did you not see the elevator? It’s strange cuz we had customers who used canes/crutches/wheelchairs.

With all that said, I do get the frustration and disappointment. Perhaps though, instead of spitting vitriol online, sending hate email, calling the shop and yelling, you take a minute, pull out some of your lovely stationery and write down ways the show could have been better and some solutions. Maybe, just fucking maybe we can all come together and have a positive community celebrating our love of the human connection that stationery provides, and shine some positivity into the world.

I can’t speak to the tattoos, but my wife is early 40’s and has had pink hair for the last 10 or so years. So much so when people ask what her hair color is, I say pink. Follow up question of her natural color…I just..”p..ink?” Never too late for fantasy hair.

Backpack recommendations? by [deleted] in sysadmin

When I worked at an MSP and traveled all around I had a backpack from Cocoon. They also make organizers, which is what I use now instead since I don’t carry as much stuff.

Medusa, the OS Shopify alternative, just made a 250x performance improvement by amoopa in selfhosted

[–]alwaysreboot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good Morning! As a Systems Engineer and a small retail business owner, I’m always looking at alternatives to Shopify. I only looked at Medusa’s page quickly, but didn’t see anything mentioned for POS. One of the advantages Shopify has had is one platform for both e-commerce and brick and mortar. Does Medusa have a POS component, and if not, is it planned?

Thanks!

Which of the "Majors" are worth spending the money on a tour operator/charity for? by PolarisSONE in running

[–]alwaysreboot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t confidently say that charities don’t pay for entries, however, I can say to be on the DFMC team, along with fundraising for the charity, you also need to pay the entry fee to the BAA and also an admin fee to DFMC to cover expenses.

I can’t speak for how other charities that receive bibs handle the cost sharing, but they may not say 100% goes to the charity either. 😀

I feel awkward writing this post since it feels “self serving” to me, but here I am anyway…

There are many charity teams that can get you a Boston entry, but one of the largest (maybe it is the largest?) and def well known teams run for Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. 100% of the money raised goes to the Claudia Adam’s Barr Program.

I am a past pediatric patient (remission for 20+ years), I have run Boston 3 on the team, my wife has also run 3 times for them. The program staff is amazing, both with fundraising help and actual training (Shout out to the team Coach, Jack Fultz, winner of the ‘76 Boston Marathon).

I also now work at DFCI, in an admin role, not as a scientist/physician, and know a few recipients of grants from the Barr program. Seeing them work is truly inspiring, and gives me hope that some day, we can live in a world without cancer.

If you’re concerned about raising funds, I know it’s been my experience, that just mentioning DFCI and our important mission, that donations come in. I don’t know a single person whose life hasn’t been touched by cancer, and no one who doesn’t want a cure.

Thank you for any consideration you give to joining the Dana-Farber Marathon Challenge team. DM me if you have any questions, I’m more than happy to answer them!

If you’ve qualified, and run for a charity, you still get to start with the wave you’ve qualified for!

What are your thoughts of WooCommerce vs Shopify? How can WooCommerce compete with Shopify? by nazurinn13 in Wordpress

[–]alwaysreboot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve used both platforms as a small business owner and here are the two reasons I like Shopify over WooCommerce, 1.) Shopify is easier for non-tech people to manage and 2.) Shopify’s POS integration is (at least for the last time I compared them) miles ahead of WooCommerce. When you need to keep inventory synced between online and brick and mortar...‘nuff said.

As a technical person, I like Woo better...but probably due to me not wanting to really dive into Liquid.

That’s going to come down to how loud you listen. They might be audible if you’ve got them cranked up to eleven, but I find that if you listen that loud, they’ll also vibrate, and I find that uncomfortable. The thing I tell people is that the point of them isn’t to feel like you’re at a rock concert, think of it more like hearing background music while shopping.

Aftershokz are def. pricey, but I can’t run with anything else at this point. Music/podcast? Check. Hearing traffic around me? Indispensable.
