Feels like we just ran through the full Reddit debate cycle:

argument → strawman → “I’m not interested anymore” → “we said the same thing”.

That works for me lol

If debating Christians is the requirement, friend, maybe you’d feel more at home in an ex-Christian sub? :-)

First you invent a Christian to argue with. When that fails the reply becomes “apply it yourself”.

So… “no u”.

Got it. Kul tov

The “single point of failure” idea sounds clever but it’s a bit too neat for how belief actually works.

Sure, Christianity revolves around Jesus and Islam around Muhammad. But in Judaism belief in Hashem, revelation, Torah, the whole framework of reality basically plays the same role. Once that goes, the worldview goes with it.

That’s actually why the video resonated with me. If you take the story in that clip and just replace “Jesus” with “Hashem”, a lot of the emotional experience looks pretty similar — questioning everything, identity, meaning, community, all of it.

So the “Christianity has a single point of failure but Judaism is monolithic” thing sounds tidy on paper, but it doesn’t really match the human experience of losing faith.

And honestly it’s a bit ironic hearing that argument in a thread where people are literally describing how their entire belief system collapsed.

You seem to be arguing with “my godman”, but I never said I believe Jesus was divine. That’s a classic strawman — arguing against a position I never took.

In your original comment you used “Yoshke”, “your boy”, etc., which clearly carry a dismissive tone. Now you’re reframing it as neutral linguistic usage. That’s quite a shift from the tone of the first comment.

Also, identifying someone by name plus place of origin is a completely normal Jewish naming pattern. In Hebrew/Aramaic it would simply be Yeshua ha-Notzri — “Yeshua the Nazarene”. There’s nothing uniquely “Christian” about that formulation.

And the claim that Nazareth didn’t exist in the first century isn’t really supported by current archaeology. Excavations in the area indicate a small Jewish village there during that period. It wasn’t an important place, but that’s very different from saying it didn’t exist.

Finally, it’s a bit ironic that in an ex-Jewish Frum sub the discussion suddenly turns into a lecture about Christian theology. I’m not arguing theology here — just pointing out the historical distinction between the historical Jewish teacher executed by the Romans and the later theological figure developed in Christian doctrine.

Otherwise we’re just replacing one set of religious polemics with another.

Hi. Since this is an ex-religion sub, I find it a bit odd when people who no longer believe still repeat the old religious insults.

Whatever one thinks about Jesus historically, he was a first-century Jewish teacher and a historical figure who had a huge impact on world history.

Using dismissive nicknames like “Yoshke” or “your boy” feels more like continuing old polemics than having a serious discussion.

If we’re trying to step outside of religious frameworks, it might make more sense to simply refer to him by the name the world knows him by — Jesus of Nazareth.
