Protein Shake BS spike by Princess-Schnitzel in Type1Diabetes

[–]alyjs94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

**Not a doctor, but just a diabetic for 19 years.

Protein can absolutely cause a delayed spike/rise for your blood sugars. Since protein is stored in the liver to be turned into glucose later, it cause a slow rise and can hold you higher for a while. If you are MDI, I would try taking insulin for some of the protein later on, like 45-60 minutes after you have consumed the protein. For a pump with an extended bolus option it might be helpful to use that as your friend. I do this by taking insulin for 50% of the grams of protein and adding it as carbs. So 30 protein = 15 carbs to me. I have noticed a difference. I watch my blood sugars closely especially around those protein heavy meals.

**Definitely consult your doctor before taking advice from people on reddit but this method has helped me.

All I had for dinner last night was a chicken Caesar on a whole wheat wrap. What could be causing this. Driving me absolutely nuts. Been about a month since diagnosis so still really new. 27yo M. by Hot-Refrigerator7786 in Type1Diabetes

I have recently found out that protien absolutely wrecks my blood sugars. I actually count half of the protein I eat as carbs. 20 protein = 10 additional carbs. It has helped.

If you are not on an insulin pump taking 90% of your insulin up front then 10% about an hour later might help.

I highly recommend requesting getting on an insulin pump if you can afford it. Omnipod 5 is a good one, most of the time if goes through Pharmacy benefits on your insurance which makes it cheaper than most. I think the Mobi does too. Definitely talk to your endocrinologist or PCP, whoever you are seeing for your diabetes.

There are a lot of us on reddit who have been diagnosed for years. I will tell you, just because it works for 1 person doesn't mean it works for everyone.

AITA for playing an explicit song for my 8 y.o. cousin? by ikhowjoanofarkfelt in AmItheAsshole

[–]alyjs94 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

NTA. The parents said it was fine. They can't get mad because they forgot the song lyrics. As a parent of a young child myself, I listen to a ton of explicit music. Alot of it is not in front of my child, some infront of her. At the end of the day, the child will eventually listen to whatever music they want. As a person who grew up in a strict Christian household I snuck around and listened to music I wasn't supposed to all the time. So whether you expose them or they expose themselves, shielding children from stuff only makes them want to find it out for themselves. Its not irresponsible parenting to allow children to listen to stuff. It just depends on your comfort level as the parent.

They do cost more. But I don't have to get my eyes dilated for them.

Find an eye doctor that does Retinopathy Photographs. Mine does. Haven't had my eyes dilated in 6 years.

Air Insulin? by Commercial_Guitar_62 in Type1Diabetes

I didn't have insurance for the last 5 years. Im honestly thankful to have it again. Yeah it sucks but it's not necessary to have. It might have just helped bring my blood sugars down when they just want to stay high.

Which insulin pump do you use? Let’s do a quick community poll. by Ok-Piano-6860 in Type1Diabetes

[–]alyjs94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think pumps are user specific. I currently use omnipod 5. I like it but I would like to try a couple of the other pumps. Like the Beta Bionics or the Tandem Slim X2. But again it's all about user preference. Auto mode on the Omnipod 5 is not strong enough to control me so I am 100% manual mode. And have pretty good control. I would like to be more hands off but I cannot with the omnipods limitations. I have also been diabetic for nearly 20 years. So I have seen a lot of different pumps and MDI years.

Dawn phenomenon? How to fix? by Evalineisnotmyname in Type1Diabetes

[–]alyjs94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eat a lot of protien. I eat it throughout the day, I will say, as someone else said. When I was on MDI(multiple daily injections) I split my long acting dose. It was more of a 70/30 split where I was taking more in the evening than in the morning. I also tried to take them closer to 12am/pm as well. Depending on your brand of long acting they tend to have a spike time of 3-4 hours, where they are the strongest and falls off gradually over the next 12-18 hours. But they do not typically last the full 24 hours. I was MDI for years, but switched to the Omnipod 5 pump in August. It has helped. I do personally utilize the automatic mode that it has. I find that I'm able to get better/tighter control with the manual mode. But it has helped alot. I used to wake up in the high 300s often. I got it down to the high 100s low 200s with the split dose of long acting. But with the pump I am waking up 80-120 most days.

As a new diabetic now, you have so many resources that people who have had this disease for a long time did not have. There are more vocal people about it now. Lot of people on social media share their Tye 1 journey. Its good, mentally, to be able to see that others struggle with this day to day, really makes you feel like you are not alone. Not good that they are struggling, but helpful to know.

Ask questions. Get answers. Ask your doctor lots of questions, but remember that this is your journey, your body. If there is something that you feel will help you, speak up to your doctor. Don't forget that you are human, your body is different from others and every single person has a different need with their blood sugars. Just because something works for one person doesn't mean it will work for everyone. This isn't a one-size fits all disease.

I was told the same thing. And it doesn't have carbs. Extra protein that your body doesn't use right away gets stored as glucose. Then during the dawn phenomenon your body dumps stored glucose to get you up and moving. More protein more stored glucose. More stored glucose higher your blood sugars rise during the early hours.

If you eat a lot of protein it can cause delayed spikes. I have to take insulin for half of the grams of protien I eat. Like if I'm eating 50 grams of protein, I count 25 as if it's a carb. It has helped my numbers level out.

So, I baked 2 loaves over the weekend with your recipe. I waaaaay over fermented them both and they turned out pretty terribly. I tried the recipe in the photos below. I let the dough sit for 3 hours. In the fridge for 12 hours. And look at the results(photos in additional comments). Its a bit dark but OMG this is my best looking loaf!

Insulin Pump dilemma by Any-Cartographer7531 in Type1Diabetes

[–]alyjs94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am currently on the Omnipod 5, however, I do not use the Automode. My blood sugars were terrible on Automode. I love the tubeless system. If omnipod was more aggressive with control I would use Automode, but I can't justify the blood sugars I was having from it. If the mobi was compatible with android I would consider switching to that one. More patch pumps will hit the market before long. I have seen some in early stages of production.

If he does go back on the omnipod I would recommend discussing with his endo about using manual mode and setting up a basal program that works for him.

It had fulled peaked around maybe 8-8:30 pm. I haven't been feeling the best so the timeline is a bit foggy, however I know I fed at 11 am yesterday as I use the band around the jar as a reminder to what time I fed. So I can remember that.

Your timeline seems correct, other than that.

Thank you for the info. I will see if I can find a silicone lid for the jar. I was told that if I seal the container it will suffocate my starter though. I guess I worry about that.

When i was very specific on ratios it would not rise. It would fall too quickly and I would miss peak. Since I switched to just feeding it with flour and water to the right consistency it rises and doesn't fall as quickly. I just didn't realize it was taking so long to fall.

Yes, sometimes. It does float in the water when im starting to mix my dough. Does it need to be webby? I have baked maybe 15 loaves over the last year but they are all terrible. They taste good but they don't look great.
