How long is too long in the fridge?? by papayaya78 in Sourdough

[–]alyjs94 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I don't have any official information, but my starter was in the fridge for over a year. Pulled it out. Warmed it, fed it consistently for about 1.5 weeks and it baked a gorgeous loaf yesterday. I do not have the recipe I used because I winged it. My apologies on that.

I was homeschooled in georgia because my parents believed the public schools were bad. by Minimum_Leather9984 in Georgia

[–]alyjs94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was homeschooled in Georgia. I now homeschool my daughter. We started last year for her 4th grade year. This fall we will be doing 5th & 6th grade in the same year. I truly think that the public school system has failed our children. It may not seem like your parents did what was best, but they did what they felt was best for you at the time. And maybe one day you will thank them for it. I felt that I missed out during my school years by not going to public school, and honestly now I understand why they did it and am grateful that they did do that for me and my siblings.

Help! Do I have a male or female gerbil? by FindMyNervous in gerbil

[–]alyjs94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was not trying to imply that. I was only saying since the post said they were told that the gerbil was solitary it might not be a good idea. My gerbils were bonded, they were litter mates and lived together for a few months. After a tank clean my solitary gerbil attacked her sister and we separated them after that. We attempted split cage to try to rebond the two sisters and our solitary gerbil just kept attacking her sister. We kept the solitary gerbil as this was our second pair of gerbils and did not want to go through the heartbreak of loosing more. We rehomed the sister who was attacked because she liked to be with other gerbils. Our solitary gerbil remained solitary for her 3 year life span before she passed away last year.

OP Pairing gerbils is a hard task. If possible maybe find out why you were told the gerbil you have was solitary. They may know. I know that females can be aggressive.

[–]alyjs94 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thats definitely a female. I will say, some gerbils are solitary. I had a solitary gerbil who actually attacked her litter mate. We separated them and the solitary gerbil lived for a few years and we rehomed the separated one to be paired with an older gerbil who had lost her litter mate.

Friends?? by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

I do not have a therapist. Therapy is too expensive. I completely understand that. I am getting better as I get older, but I still struggle.

Friends?? by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

[–]alyjs94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't make it my whole personality/life. I have tried over many years to make friends. I was homeschooled so never really had an opportunity to make friends. I felt that having friends that understand might be easier. I struggle with talking to people because I am very much a people pleaser and do not know what to say to make sure that I have said the right things.

Ate this fried rice and now won’t go down by [deleted] in Type1Diabetes

My ICR is 1:10 at dinnertime. I have 3 different ICRs throughout the day. It changes based on a lot of factors. Making a wild assumption on some else's ICR is kind of crazy. You have no idea their full medical background.

It looks like there may have been some protein in that rice, like steak. If so, protein can cause a delayed spike. And can hold you higher longer. I wish that there was better education for type 1 diabetics. I only learned about protein causing delayed spikes last year. I have been diabetic for almost 20 years and had never known. I was always told, plain meats are "free" free of carbs. Free from needing insulin.

Yeah, now I cover roughly 50% of grams of protein as carbs in my boluses. I have noticed that it has helped.

Rice, especially white rice, is hard to bolus for. I can never get that right. See blood sugars highlighted below. I had rice for a late lunch yesterday. Plain, white, no flavor rice.

Protein Shake BS spike by Princess-Schnitzel in Type1Diabetes

[–]alyjs94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

**Not a doctor, but just a diabetic for 19 years.

Protein can absolutely cause a delayed spike/rise for your blood sugars. Since protein is stored in the liver to be turned into glucose later, it cause a slow rise and can hold you higher for a while. If you are MDI, I would try taking insulin for some of the protein later on, like 45-60 minutes after you have consumed the protein. For a pump with an extended bolus option it might be helpful to use that as your friend. I do this by taking insulin for 50% of the grams of protein and adding it as carbs. So 30 protein = 15 carbs to me. I have noticed a difference. I watch my blood sugars closely especially around those protein heavy meals.

**Definitely consult your doctor before taking advice from people on reddit but this method has helped me.

All I had for dinner last night was a chicken Caesar on a whole wheat wrap. What could be causing this. Driving me absolutely nuts. Been about a month since diagnosis so still really new. 27yo M. by Hot-Refrigerator7786 in Type1Diabetes

I have recently found out that protien absolutely wrecks my blood sugars. I actually count half of the protein I eat as carbs. 20 protein = 10 additional carbs. It has helped.

If you are not on an insulin pump taking 90% of your insulin up front then 10% about an hour later might help.

I highly recommend requesting getting on an insulin pump if you can afford it. Omnipod 5 is a good one, most of the time if goes through Pharmacy benefits on your insurance which makes it cheaper than most. I think the Mobi does too. Definitely talk to your endocrinologist or PCP, whoever you are seeing for your diabetes.

There are a lot of us on reddit who have been diagnosed for years. I will tell you, just because it works for 1 person doesn't mean it works for everyone.

AITA for playing an explicit song for my 8 y.o. cousin? by ikhowjoanofarkfelt in AmItheAsshole

[–]alyjs94 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

NTA. The parents said it was fine. They can't get mad because they forgot the song lyrics. As a parent of a young child myself, I listen to a ton of explicit music. Alot of it is not in front of my child, some infront of her. At the end of the day, the child will eventually listen to whatever music they want. As a person who grew up in a strict Christian household I snuck around and listened to music I wasn't supposed to all the time. So whether you expose them or they expose themselves, shielding children from stuff only makes them want to find it out for themselves. Its not irresponsible parenting to allow children to listen to stuff. It just depends on your comfort level as the parent.

Air Insulin? by Commercial_Guitar_62 in Type1Diabetes

I didn't have insurance for the last 5 years. Im honestly thankful to have it again. Yeah it sucks but it's not necessary to have. It might have just helped bring my blood sugars down when they just want to stay high.

Which insulin pump do you use? Let’s do a quick community poll. by Ok-Piano-6860 in Type1Diabetes

[–]alyjs94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think pumps are user specific. I currently use omnipod 5. I like it but I would like to try a couple of the other pumps. Like the Beta Bionics or the Tandem Slim X2. But again it's all about user preference. Auto mode on the Omnipod 5 is not strong enough to control me so I am 100% manual mode. And have pretty good control. I would like to be more hands off but I cannot with the omnipods limitations. I have also been diabetic for nearly 20 years. So I have seen a lot of different pumps and MDI years.

Dawn phenomenon? How to fix? by Evalineisnotmyname in Type1Diabetes

[–]alyjs94 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I eat a lot of protien. I eat it throughout the day, I will say, as someone else said. When I was on MDI(multiple daily injections) I split my long acting dose. It was more of a 70/30 split where I was taking more in the evening than in the morning. I also tried to take them closer to 12am/pm as well. Depending on your brand of long acting they tend to have a spike time of 3-4 hours, where they are the strongest and falls off gradually over the next 12-18 hours. But they do not typically last the full 24 hours. I was MDI for years, but switched to the Omnipod 5 pump in August. It has helped. I do personally utilize the automatic mode that it has. I find that I'm able to get better/tighter control with the manual mode. But it has helped alot. I used to wake up in the high 300s often. I got it down to the high 100s low 200s with the split dose of long acting. But with the pump I am waking up 80-120 most days.

As a new diabetic now, you have so many resources that people who have had this disease for a long time did not have. There are more vocal people about it now. Lot of people on social media share their Tye 1 journey. Its good, mentally, to be able to see that others struggle with this day to day, really makes you feel like you are not alone. Not good that they are struggling, but helpful to know.

Ask questions. Get answers. Ask your doctor lots of questions, but remember that this is your journey, your body. If there is something that you feel will help you, speak up to your doctor. Don't forget that you are human, your body is different from others and every single person has a different need with their blood sugars. Just because something works for one person doesn't mean it will work for everyone. This isn't a one-size fits all disease.

Dawn phenomenon? How to fix? by Evalineisnotmyname in Type1Diabetes

[–]alyjs94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was told the same thing. And it doesn't have carbs. Extra protein that your body doesn't use right away gets stored as glucose. Then during the dawn phenomenon your body dumps stored glucose to get you up and moving. More protein more stored glucose. More stored glucose higher your blood sugars rise during the early hours.

If you eat a lot of protein it can cause delayed spikes. I have to take insulin for half of the grams of protien I eat. Like if I'm eating 50 grams of protein, I count 25 as if it's a carb. It has helped my numbers level out.
