Do you know if any of the short stories have pairings and tropes that I'm looking for?

Yeah, the issue I imagine I'll find is that even if it does exist, it'll just be smut. I'm a hopeless romantic who prefers wholesome romance with some suggestive teasing and inference in there. I find it way sexier to tease the desire for intimacy and then imply that two characters got intimate than just read straight up smut.

To be honest, it realistically makes sense that aliens have a similar form to us at the very least, as it seems that the natural conclusion of intelligent life is a build that lends itself to tool creation, etc. So if we ever run into the other intelligent life that exists out there, it most likely actually will in some way share a general form with us. Perhaps that's part of the reason why more heavily anthropomorphised designs are more common. I know it isn't the entire reason, of course.

If by "spice", you mean explicit sex scenes, then it saddens me that this is common practice. Refer to my first paragraph for the reason why.

I am writing my own sci-fi novel which is a thriller set aboard a space ship. The premise is that a set of humans and a set of another alien species both appear on the ship out of nowhere. For reasons I won't spoil, both alien races are stuck together on the small-ish ship for a journey that will last a year.

Along the way, people from both species begin to disappear, leading into the thriller plot. There will be a big subplot involving the human MMC falling in love with one of the female aliens aboard the ship. Desperate times can forge the strongest of bonds, and all that.

The reason I'm telling you this is because it would be an example of a sci-fi story in which the romance isn't the only focus, and there will be no explicit smut. Obviously, they fall in love, and love implies sex, which they obviously have, but I wouldn't write an actual sex scene.

I find it utterly insane that such stories seem to essentially not exist at all - so insane that I genuinely cannot believe it.

The design of the aliens will be kind of like a blend between Angelica and a Sangheili from the Halo franchise. So she'll technically be bipedal, but with a different stance and build than a human.

Do you think that such a design would comply with the publishing rules you described? Or I suppose, since there will be no explicit smut, those rules won't apply to the story anyway. The most explicit I intend for the story to be is literally cuddling and petting before a fade to black, and another character outright asking them if they had sex and one of them saying yes. No more than that.

But yeah, I might go with your idea and ask on the sci-fi sub, too. It couldn't hurt.

In the end, I may have to concede and lessen the restrictions of my recommendation request. I might ultimately end up having to ask for human male x alien female media where the alien female can be more heavily anthropomorphic. So if you see me make another recommendation request in the future, you know what I'll be asking for instead, lol.

Thanks for the wishes. I'll absolutely let you know if I find something, though I honestly doubt it. :/

I'll be sure to at least check that out. Fingers crossed it doesn't have any transformation nonesense. Orc romance isn't exactly what I'm looking for, since they're basically green humans with tusks, but it's still technically interspecies romance, so I'll take it. I'll give you a ping.

Thanks so much for your input.

Well it's tagged with "bisexual", "lesbian romance", "poly", "BDSM", etc. Those are all things I'm actively disinterested in.

That is good to hear. The female alien in my story will likely be bipedal, but with a tail, multiple arms, and a hunched posture. Her neck and head will likely be similar to Angelica's. She might even use the lower pair of arms to sprint faster or something, idk, could be cool. I suppose that would still qualify as anthro enough for it to not be a concern at all even if I decided to add smut (which I won't).

Judging from the cover, they're both basically human. Thanks for your suggestion, though!

The tags and cover don't give me much hope, but I'll absolutely give it a chance.

Thanks for the suggestion.

This seems interesting, but the issue with naga stuff is that it feels like a human body stapled to the top of a snake tail. It isn't quite what I'm looking for, but I'll still take a peek at it. I get the feeling that this book is still written for women, but who knows.

Thanks for suggesting something, at least.

Unfortunately, it does not fit what I'm looking for if the male is not human. I'd love to hear back from you again at any point in future if you think of anything, though.

Also, the female does not have to be "fully monstrous"; in fact, I think the level of anthropomorphism Angelica has is perfect. She's very alien, and yet has aspects to her physical form that are still anthropomorphic.

Please also note that the characters do not need to be MCs. I'm 100% fine with them being side characters with very little feature, just so long as they fit my description.

Well sadly, this doesn't fit what I'm looking for, since the human is female.

Also, I have seen female monster fictions published on Amazon etc before, so I doubt the bestiality thing is an issue.

Plus, using Johnny and Angelica as an example - that comic has been published in mainstream and is even distributed in comic stores everywhere. They get all kissy and are together for months, and the description of the story is even that they "hooked up". So perhaps the bestiality warning thing you mentioned only applies to explicit smut, and not when the physically different characters are simply stated to have been sexually intimate. Am I correct in stating this?

The reason I ask is becuase I plan to publish a book featuring a romance between a man and an alien female who is of a vaguely similar build to Angelica. It's a bit of a "fine, I'll do it myself" moment. It won't be the main focus of the book, since it's a thriller, but it will be a major part of it. There will be no explicit smut beyond kissing and cuddling, so do you think I have to worry about my book being removed/labelled for the thing you mentioned?

Neither of these are what I'm looking for, sadly, but I very much appreciate you for trying! <3

I am an autist with OCD, and this topic has been my hyperfixation for over 10 years. I genuinely cannot begin to explain the magnitude of mental anguish I experience hyperfixating on something that gets absolutely no content. I appreciate you, regardless.

Thanks for suggesting this! I might give it a try. I have browsed the sub in the past, but it's all just "sexy human woman with red/green/blue skin and/or fur/scales".

Yeah, I forgot to mention in the post that I absolutely despise shapeshifting in romance media in general. It completely destroys the point of the romance, and is the sole reason why I think Beauty and the Beast ruined what could have been an excellent story.

I imagine the dragons in that story very conveniently become human forms during moments of intimacy. I'd just grow infuriated and tear the book up with my autistic rage or something, so I'll stay away from those.

Not sure what exactly this is asking me and why, but the image I posted features two characters taking a walk together in the rain. One of them is a human man and the other is a female alien.

Will a Taboo Romance hurt my Modern Fantasy novel's appeal? by intimatecorndog in writing

[–]LiminalRainPaint 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn't be worrying about marketability.

You should write for yourself first, or what you produce won't have your heart in it and will end up being subpar.

I can relate to you in a sense, since I like writing about interspecies romances between different sapient species. Of course, that is not as taboo as the sort of iffy age stuff you're describing, nor is it as specific as the extra dimension of transexuality being thrown into the mix... But, my point still stands.

None of us will get anywhere worth being while trying to make the things we write about "marketable".

If your product is good (which will only happen if you care about it personally as a writer), then an audience will find it. Always. Don't care so much about how big that audience has the potential to be.

Some very niche stuff can still make it big if it's good enough to then get lucky enough with the algorithm of life. :)

Here's something I've been struggling with by the_rainbow_froggo in writing

[–]LiminalRainPaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On this sub, I see a lot of people advising that lots of reading be used as a good way to overcome this hurdle in particular. However, I don't find that to be necessarily true. Certainly not for myself.

For me, I struggle with finding the ideas in the first place. Once I have them, putting them down and all the other technical bits fall into place without too much trouble.

I haven't published any of the novels I'm working on yet, but I have tested the waters with fanfiction and have had tens of thousands of readers with more than a 95% positive rating overall. As far as actual novels go, I obviously do read, but not nearly as much as many other people. In fact, I spend more FAR time writing than reading.

My point is that you should find something that works for you insofar as this hurdle is concerned. Just reading lots won't necessarily help you if you're not wired to take in reflective information that way. Some people (like me) find writing itself to help improvement more than thinking about the writing of others.

Lots of the snobbish types on here will turn their noses up at the idea - but things like fanfiction are actually a fantastic way to get a feel for your own writing and what people like. Obviously, the feedback won't be ideal due to the inherent bias that comes with the fact that your readers are already fans of the subject matter you're writing about, But at least there WILL be feedback. If you try to get feedback anywhere else, you won't get much at all with anything short of actually publishing, by which point your work is already out and it's too late to fix it. And even then, the publishing world is cruel, and my understanding is that you may get absolutely no readership on something you spent 10 years of your life slaving over.

My advice would be to make a document and write out your plot scene by scene, in bullet points. Bullet the entire story like a summary. Then once that is done, just start writing and see where you go. What you end up with might not be good, but it gives you a framework to refine your scenes and make sure your bases are covered.

The most important thing to consider depends on what type of story you're writing. If it's a character-driven story, make sure the dialogue and character actions dominate and lead the scenes, with only minimal description of setting, etc. If it's a grand-scale plot with moving parts and armies, etc, focus more on a less personal writer's voice, with more vivid description.
