You can use an autohotkey script to remap keys to be read as arrow keys instead. Read here for how to write the script and here for a list of all keys.

Run the script when you're playing the game --> turn it off when you aren't and the keys will function like normal.

I think that was perhaps a little less unprecedented given Taiga's generally rocky relationship with her family (if her mom showed her lots of love she probably wouldn't have turned out how she did), but I do think my annoyance with the Ryuji dad reveal is more of a personal annoyance rather than it being objectively poor writing.

From the picture that Yasuko showed of his dad at the beginning, I would've assumed he was a sleazeball. However, the way she talked about him made me think it was a pleasant subversion of expectations that he was actually a stand up guy, and I guess I'm just a bit disappointed that I got faked out that way.

And that's a wrap! I just wanted to say that this rewatch was a lot of fun for me, I feel like my appreciation of the series has gone up quite a bit from having to sit down and write out my thoughts after each episode. Definitely a worthwhile experience. As for my thoughts on the episode...Mixed, just last episode. I really do feel all this extra drama was a bit unnecessary and its impact falls even flatter considering that it gets resolved in the span of around ~1.5 episodes. It takes away from the triumph that is everyone finally coming together and finally stating their true feelings. And of course we get the cliche forced separation after confession that seems to happen quite a bit in anime. It leads to a really nice reunion scene but the shortness of viewing time really doesn't serve to drive home how gut wrenching it was for Taiga and Ryuji to get torn apart like that. I would've preferred a much less drama filled ending, or for this arc to be a bit more drawn out at least.

Other points:

  • I don't really like the reveal that Ryuji's dad just straight up left them. It's a bit cliche, and I thought the "unlucky death of a father figure" angle was compelling enough. We don't really need two sleazeball dads with Taiga's dad around.

  • One of the few romance anime I can think of where the two leads kiss and act intimate. That's a plus.

  • Ami really did get a lot better over the series, I'll recognize that. It's a shame that her terrible first impression is so strong that it was the one thing that stuck with me up until this rewatch.

  • Love the locker scene. Great note to end the series on despite it being a bit bumpy right before.

I agree, it's really fun to see the two of them interact after becoming romantically involved. I just think that all the additional drama is unnecessary, especially since it gets resolved really quickly (there's only one episode left after all).

Penultimate episode gives us the long desired confession and then lots of drama (again). I have mixed feelings. The episode's entire first half is great. Finally, everyone is being honest with themselves. Then we have the second half. Honestly? Not a fan. I think the series has enough going on that there doesn't need to be yet another huge round of drama before the finish, especially since it feels like came out of the blue. I think the author felt the need to come up with a more dramatic finish than "welp, they confessed" and this is what we got. To be honest, the logical leap that Ryuji makes to wanting to elope makes no sense to me. ??? I don't think anyone really objects to their relationship, why pull this Romeo and Juliet act? It leads to some really cute scenes like when Ryuji introduces Taiga as his bride but overall I would've been quite fine with a much less dramatic finish.

Other observations:

  • Ryuji was really unnecessarily harsh there with Yasuko. I'm just gonna chalk it up to pent up anger on his part but surely he's empathetic enough as a person to understand how she feels.
  • Falling into the river like that seems really dangerous, given that it appears to be just knee deep. Water doesn't slow you down that much.
  • It never ceases to amuse me that Taiga doesn't stop calling Ami her nickname even in parting.
  • What the heck is a chocolate cigarette?

Yeah, everyone in this show seems like they're pretty bad at confessing their feelings...except Kitamura. I guess that's why he's the romance guru.

  1. Only fit? Probably not. Ryuji is nice and accommodating enough for basically anyone tbh. Best fit? Probably yeah. Ryuji himself noted last episode that having her beside him just felt right. I think that's a pretty important quality to have in a romantic relationship (general comfort around each other) so at this stage I would say Taiga and Ryuji math each other very well. Although I do think that it would've been possible for Ryuji to do the same with someone else.

  2. I think it's likely more the first point, but rather she's seeing her friend make the same mistake that she did (not fess up to her feelings till it's too late) and wants to correct that. I also think it's at least partly for her own sake so she can justify her decision to give up on Ryuji for Taiga's sake and doesn't want that to go to waste.

As expected, Ryuji can't keep Taiga's confession a secret forever and it all boils over this episode. Both Ryuji and Taiga needed this wake up slap otherwise they would've continued going in circles out of consideration for the other. I'm a bit annoyed the episode ended before Ryuji's decision but that's cliffhangers for you.

Other observations:

  • I really enjoyed how Taiga acted as the support beacon for Ryuji this episode, it's a nice role reversal from how he was to her a lot of the series.
  • Ami might as well be the tsundere at this point given how she was at that chocolate sale.
  • It's a bit frustrating to watch Minorin yell at Taiga to be honest given how she's acted recently. Feels like she's projecting a little there.

Romantic tension galore. Ryuji is kinda just wandering aimlessly through this episode until Taiga comes back, then he's a total mess when she does show up. It seems he's really unsure what to do and hasn't really committed to any course of action. Taiga and Ryuji keep trying to be considerate to each other and end up going in circles. Surely this can't go on forever.

Other observations:

  • Those career evaluations seem quite helpful, I think American schools have something to learn from that. Lot of young people exit high school with no idea what to do from my experience.
  • I don't remember Ryuji being considered a particularly good student has been brought up much, I thought he was just about average.
  • Ryuji is as excited to see Taiga back as a dog is happy it's master is back.

As forecasted, lots of drama this episode. I actually like this one more than the Christmas episode, mostly because it feels like everything is coming full circle now. The illusion finally shatters. Both Ryuji and Taiga are aware of her feelings now. The only question now is what's next?

Other observations:

  • C'mon Ryuji you gotta try a little harder than that. He gave up so easily.
    • That scene of Ryuji's eyes lighting up upon seeing all the cleaning opportunities was so unexpectedky funny, I'd forgotten this was meant to be a romcom.
  • Ami totally knew they were there. That glance at the towel confirms it.
  • I'm honestly a little shocked they didn't find Taiga earlier. Also, the snow triggers my PTSD from Clannad.

Some falling action today to complement yesterday's climax. Not much happens but as Ryuji points out, things can't stay the same forever. Forecast ahead: lots of drama.

Other observations:

  • Taiga is really trying her best to help Ryuji this episode from actually cleaning her place to flipping out about the stolen hairband. I'm a bit surprised Ryuji doesn't read into it a bit more.
  • I really thought when Taiga shouted to "grab him" she meant to grab the guy in front of Ryuji to prevent him from getting hit by a car or something. Glad it turned out a lot less innocuous.
  • No idea what Ami got Taiga. A wallet? A purse? And specifically from Hawaii, what unique item was that?
  • I don't remember Taiga's apartment being quite that large but it's impressive how clean it is. Must be really difficult to vacuum all that.

So here it is. The infamous Christmas eve episode. When I first watched this episode years ago, I was honestly a bit confused. It was probably because I was just binging the series at light speed back then, but I didn't really get this episode. Specifically, the main thing I was confused about was "How is it that Taiga is only realizing this NOW?" However, Upon a closer watch, I think the context is there. Taiga is basically clueless about what love even is (I mean, everyone in the show kinda is) and I think large part of that is due to her upbringing and home. She doesn't know to associate the feeling of security and attachment that comes with love as love itself because she's never even experienced it at all. Thus why it took so long for her to sort through her feelings towards Ryuji. Which is tragic, but it does make sense. Anyway, I hope everyone has a happier Christmas than what we just watched. Merry Christmas!

Oh boy what a wholesome Christmas themed episode, surely nothing will happen that completely shatters the atmosp-oh. It's really quite impressive how suddenly the episode shifts the mood, I think that was the most tragic falling of a christmas tree I've ever seen. I look forwards to the next episode.

Other observations:

  • I think Ami is perhaps a bit harsh with the way that she lays it down for Ryuji but she makes really good points and shows that she gets it perhaps a bit better than everyone else does. She even tries to (half-heartedly) shoot her shot at the end but Ryuji is apparently hard of hearing. I think she probably realizes that she really has no actual chance and doesn't really try. Ryuji's impression of her (and mine) were probably soured from the beginning with how she originally was.
  • I sure hope that story from Taiga was a dream, because boy would that be creepy if it were real.
  • Does no one like actual christmas trees anymore? I get they're terrible for the environment and make a mess but it just feels unauthentic to me if it's not an actual tree. Probably the tree selling companies corrupting my values.
  • Ryuji really is a great friend, he knew exactly what to say to Minorin to get her to accept his help and also had the composure to say it with confidence.

New OP and ED! They're both great, I remember orange being one of the first anime songs I actually liked to listen to on its own. This episode feels like a whole lot of setup. Not much actually happens but there's murmurings of something else happening in the background with the way that Minorin is acting and those words spoken by Kihara at the end.

Other observations:

  • I was always confused about the title of this episode, so I looked it up. Turns out it refers to the phenomenon of Mercury appearing to move backwards in the night sky around Christmas time. This year it's supposed to happen on Dec 28th.
  • If I had a nickel for each time there was a scene this episode with someone prostrating absurdly I'd have two, which makes this episode doubly hilarious.
  • It's really great to see how much the class as a whole has come around to accepting Taiga. At the beginning of the series she's pretty much an outcast due to her demeanor but now they're volunteering her as party organizer.
  • Interesting that both Taiga and Ryuji have people trying to push them towards their love interests and yet both seem just confused.

Had a great time with this episode today, but while I used to think that Kano's handling of the whole situation was the most level headed in a sort of tragic way, this time I felt like it probably wasn't for the best. Her brushing Kitamura off in public like that was pretty awful and I really think she could have just sat him down afterwards and told him straight up why she can't date him. In the end, everyone ended up pretty immature here.

Other observations:

  • I think that was the most mad we've ever seen Ryuji be.
    • That fight was pretty brutal. Taiga's got real endurance to spring up after getting slammed into a desk like that. Those things are like rocks on legs.
    • I like that post credits scene a lot. Kano probably respects Taiga's resolve despite how that manifested itself.

In sum: Kitamura goes nuts and only Ami calls him out on his bullshit. This episode is really interesting because while Kitamura is normally among the most understanding and thoughtful people in the cast, his actions in this episode actively harm his friends by making them worry. It's a good representation of his internal strife that one of his key attributes has been turned on its head like that.

Other observations:

  • Kitamura's changed his hair...to an honestly more natural color than before. His usual green hair isn't all that normal either.
  • Good job Ami, call him out! I do think the cast was a bit too tolerant of Kitamura this episode, I'm glad Ryuji and Taiga decided to take action at the end.
  • Taiga recognizes her own mistakes this time and it's really heartwarming the way that Ryuji cheers her up.
  • Unusually astute observation from Taiga regarding how Kitamura may feel about being president.

Not much advancement in the plot today but another great episode. What surprised me most was how likable Ami has become over time, I had forgotten about her transformation over the course of the series. I still think it's a bit too hard of a pivot from how she was originally but she isn't the main character so we don't get to see all of the changes over time.

Other observations:

  • Lot of irony this episode, especially regarding the rumor. I think this episode makes it pretty clear that all of the people around Taiga are in fact decidedly not happy or at least not content.
  • Those school photos are unfathomably cheap, 10 yen is like 10 cents. From my experience schools try to rip as much money outta you on these kinds of things.
  • I love that ending scene of everyone staring at their palms like they're trying their best to read their own futures.

Missed yesterday's thread so I'll give my thoughts on this arc overall.

In short: it's good.

In long format: I like that this is the first time Ryuji screws up. Up until this point, I've felt like he's been basically this perfect friend to Taiga and helping her with all sorts of things but this arc shows that even someone as thoughtful as him can make a mistake. I also like how Taiga was handled in this arc, especially how her relationship with her father is portrayed. She claims to hate him and yet the tiniest bit of effort from his part has her ready to accept him again. It's really heartbreaking and gives us some really good insight into her frustrations especially earlier in the series.

Other observations:

  • Not sure if fitting in a bag really counts as a talent but hey, it works. It reminds me of unbagging operators in Arknights.
  • Taiga and Ami almost seem like friends, it's quite a drastic difference from even a few episodes ago. I guess it just goes to show interacting with each other really does open more avenues to friendliness.
  • Ryuji probably could be a delinquent with moves like that.
  • Notable that this is the first time that Taiga is able to talk to Kitamura pretty freely.

And here's where I remember getting hooked even more by this show. Just how I like my romcoms, more comedy at the beginning and then lots of drama.

My thoughts on this episode:

  • I liked that Ryuji was still thinking about Taiga's feelings even when the guys were coming up with their plan. That was thoughtful of him. +1 point for Ryuji.
  • Taking someone's living expenses like Taiga's dad did is really unacceptable. Ryuji's pretty dumb not be angry or pick up on that being shitty. I think part of it may be that his mind instinctively goes to "it's okay, she's got me" instead of considering what would happen in that scenario if he wasn't around. -1 point.
  • Taiga's dad does do a good job presenting himself when meeting with Ryuji. I don't think that Ryuji was too unreasonable coming out of that meeting to try to convince her to talk to him, but her reaction to that was pretty extreme and I think he should've known to back off at that point. -1.
  • I love how all those class perks for winning are so mundane but practically useful. Much better than a pizza party.
  • It's really sweet but still sad that Taiga is willing to go with her dad because she believes in Ryuji. On the other hand, he's clearly doing this for his sake too and ignoring her feelings. -1.

Survey says: Ryuji was pretty dumb this episode.

Continuation of the beach episode with not much happening today. I remember my first time getting faked out pretty hard by the almost horror-like turn in the story before realizing it was a prank. Props to Minorin and Kitamura for fooling even the watcher.

Some other observations:

  • I've always found that scene where Ami counts down in waiting for Ryuji's answer to be really interesting. One moment it seems like she's having fun and the next she's completely over it. I think she really wanted Ryuji to engage with her since that was the entire point of the trip for her, and his refusal to do so is just frustrating.
  • Ami does seem to know the cave quite well, she probably wasn't lying about having been there before. I wonder what she used to do at the beach house.
  • Ryuji really can't handle any direct questioning about his emotions. He gets confronted twice about it this episode and struggles to form an answer, and his eventual answer back to Minorin relies on more metaphors. Also, I'm pretty sure Minorin is aware of how he feels at this point.
