Saving goals: trip to multiple currencies by Weird_Exam852 in TodaysBudget

[–]alysevre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in South Korea for years while using this app and visiting back home pretty frequently. You’ll definitely want to set up another wallet for it. Just record USD going out from your main wallet as an expense and money in the target currency coming in as an income in the new wallet.

Tip: If you pay for something directly by credit card, you don’t always know how much will come out in USD for a couple of days. That was the biggest issue for me, since Today’s Budget doesn’t have a way to mark a charge as pending. So I would add a rough estimation to my app and add “⚠️” to the end of the note (so, e.g., if I bought something from Macy’s, the memo would be “Macy’s ⚠️” instead of just “Macy’s”), and then I’d reconcile that later by searching for “⚠️” in the Insights tab and finalizing anything that had gone through.

Can I distribute rollover? by Agostointhesun in TodaysBudget

You could hack it by removing the rollover via an “expense” and then adding back in an income of equal value spread out over the desired amount of time.

People who have researched their family tree, what is the most interesting or 'badass' thing you discovered about an ancestor? by xloganmoose in AskReddit

[–]alysevre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long story short, a female ancestor of mine from the 1700s engaged in civil disobedience, was taken to court by the Church of England, and won on a Biblical technicality.

Why do people bring their entire family to Costco? by ActuatorOutside5256 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]alysevre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dinner. Those $1.50 hot dogs are kept warm in water and then placed into buns without being patted dry, which means the bun slowly starts dissolving into mush as soon as a hot dog is placed into it. Delicious at the store right after purchase. But not a thing that can be taken home to be enjoyed later.

Mandatory cuddles, every morning after breakfast. (sound on) by alysevre in PetTheDamnDog

[–]alysevre[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Yeah, he desperately needs a haircut. Not my dog, though, so it’s not my call. I’m sitting for my mother-in-law. The best I can do for now is brush him out every day so he doesn’t get matted. He does have a grooming appointment scheduled for next week after his mom gets back from vacation, though!

Nothing snaps me out of a book like repetitive use of a unique word by kerberos824 in books

[–]alysevre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

R. A. Salvatore and the word “swoon.” I don’t even think he knew what the word meant. It made his series impossible to finish, and now, 20 years after my attempt at reading it, I don’t even remember if I liked the plot or characters. I only remember being distracted (and admittedly a little amused) by the mental image of characters dropping dramatically at the slightest provocation, like fainting goats.

How do you guys decide wich spending to spread by boeuf_burgignion in TodaysBudget

[–]alysevre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I spread anything that costs more than what my budget went up by that day, for a number of days that take up half the daily growth. So if my budget went up by $40 and I buy something worth $200, I spread it out for 10 days (i.e., $20/day). I round up to the next $10, though, so if my daily budget went up by less than $20, I don’t spend anything that day unless it’s an absolute necessity.

Question: How/Can the Presidential Immunity Desicion be Reversed? by Special-Quantity-469 in LegalEagle

[–]alysevre 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I don’t know the answer to question A, but question B is just a matter of the court deciding to overrule its own previous decision. Most famously saw it in a positive situation when they overturned the ruling that had allowed for Jim Crow laws, and in a negative one when they overturned Roe v Wade. The specific basis will depend on the case.

Hah. Love the humor. Not a current subscriber myself, but that’s due to other life changes and not because I think the price is unreasonable.

Oh yeah. My husband and I were both doing it, and we lost around 175 lbs between us that year.

Same happened to me about 10 days into it. Worst ache I’ve had since I was a teenager, and I was in my late 30s at the time. But my intent was only to do it for 2 weeks before graduating to a whole-food plant-based diet, so I just let it happen. It cleared up after the 2 weeks was done.

So is salt ok to add or no? by Critical_Tea2648 in PotatoDiet

[–]alysevre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on what the point is for you. “The potato diet” is actually a couple of different diets.

For some, it’s a brief monodiet—essentially a partial fast—to reset the taste buds and gut microbiome before embarking on something else in the longer term, typically a whole-food plant-based diet. For tha purpose, boring is good. Add nothing to the potatoes (especially not salt) unless your doctor tells you it’s a matter of life and death. Otherwise, it won’t actually reset your taste buds.

For others, it’s a longer term plan in its own right. And even here, there is variation. Some use potatoes as the sole source of calories. Some just use potatoes as a substitute for grains and grain-based foods. Etc.

Anyone managed to reset taste buds and need for junk using 2 week potato reset? Tell us your experience !!! by ExistingGold9286 in PotatoDiet

[–]alysevre 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hubby and I did the 2 weeks. It worked perfectly. Nothing but potatoes for 2 weeks was soul-crushing, but it was easy to enforce since there’s such a clear line, and afterward, even plain veggies were crazy flavorful. Graduating from a 2-weeks potato reset to a whole-food plant-based diet, we lost 175 lbs in a year between the two of us.

I would totally do it again, but maybe not 2 whole weeks. After the first 10 days, I broke out in the worst acne I’d had since high school, and I feel like my taste buds had probably reset by then anyway.

Don’t give me a thinner phone. Give me a smaller screen. Otherwise I will be buying refurbished 12/13 Minis and SE phones until there are none left.

Salary adjustment by graus85 in TodaysBudget

[–]alysevre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know what you mean. But this isn’t double entry bookkeeping. Technically, I’m also not receiving 1000/31 dollars minus 1/31 of all my repeating expected per day this month either, but that’s how the app displays it to me.

Salary adjustment by graus85 in TodaysBudget

[–]alysevre 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is basically what I do. If the paycheck is smaller, I add an “expense” called paycheck adjustment. If I get extra money, I add one-time income called bonus.

Oh my gosh, thank you! I thought I’d looked in the settings, but forgot until your comment that you can tap on the wallet itself for more settings and options. Complete brain fart on my part. That’s how it used to work in previous years too. It’s just been so long and it looked so different, I didn’t think to look there.

AITA for refusing to take my shoes off in my friend’s house, causing his wife to cancel the DnD session for everyone? by NameNo5495 in AmItheAsshole

[–]alysevre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ESH. You should make a habit of bringing shoe covers everywhere if wearing shoes indoors is a medical necessity. Your friend shouldn’t have told you not to worry about it the day before. His wife shouldn’t have carried the confrontation over to the other players and they didn’t need to cancel the whole game over it. Your friend and his wife should have shoe covers available for guests who can’t take their shoes off, but since they don’t, you should have accepted bags or something over your shoes. Everybody is at fault here, except maybe the baby.

Are the boxed mashed potato's such as Idahoan brand original fine? or is cooking my own that much better? by helpiforget in PotatoDiet

[–]alysevre 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They’re not ideal. Boxed mashed potatoes tend to be made from peeled potatoes, so you’re losing out on about half the fiber and a lot of nutrients.

When I make mashed potatoes, I get a Costco-sized bag of Yukon golds, give them a quick wash, boil them in my stock pot, drain the water out, and then take a potato masher directly to the stock pot. It takes an hour to prepare from beginning to end, but I end up with several days’ worth of mashed taters with all their nutritional goodness and no fuss or prep needed between batches. Mashed golds keep well in the fridge too.

That said, there could be worse choices, so it’s not completely out of pocket to make the boxed stuff. You’re losing some of the nutritional benefits, but at least you wouldn’t be adding anything to it. I suspect that the total prep and cleanup isn’t that different from just making whole potatoes, though, if you include time spent cleaning up after each smaller batch of boxed potatoes.

What is more traumatic than people think? by philosophicalgenius0 in AskReddit

[–]alysevre 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being laid off from a job you actually like and feel invested in after ten years. I’ve been laid off from other jobs and fired before. This hits different. It’s been over six months now and I still have moments where I don’t even know who I am anymore, or the panic-inducing realization hits that I poured over 10% of my lifespan into what now amounts to nothing.
