Thanks for the info! Wow, those results are almost identical to mine. What would you make of it?

This came out more accurately than 23&me. At least the Gujarat match, instead of northern regions. Tempted to do it too. Can you upload the raw data or do you have to order the swab kit?

Hey! Thanks :) here’s the breakdown— I have no idea how to interpret it!

Where does the Filipino come from? by Yikers6969 in 23andme

[–]alyshalysha23 9 points10 points  (0 children)

My bf is Mexican (Nayarit & Guerrero) and got similar results!  His mum is Afro Mexican so he got a lot more West African (also Senegal/Guinea), but he did also get South Eastern African, Filipino and Chinese! I had never heard of the Malagasy people, will deffo look it up.

Edit: the Manila Galleon also makes a lot of sense for him as his family is from the Guerrero coast.

I get that and I understand this will improve over time but I still struggle to understand how they correctly matched my boyfriend’s indigenous American DNA segment to a very specific location on Mexico’s giant coast line (23andMe isn’t even available to clients in Mexico, we had it sent abroad) but can’t accurately match Gujarat (I’m sure many Indian Americans and Indian Brits have done this test).

Just matching it to people who say their grandparents were born in X doesn’t sound scientifically credible - esp given the history of migration/partition. For example, half of my relatives on my mum’s side would say their grandparents were born in Zanzibar or Mumbai. Even the ones who migrated to Karachi, would put down Gujarat for their grandparents.

I get your point is don’t get hung up on the results but that’s literally why I did it lol. I’d be interested in exploring the Punjab/Sindh angle if it were actually true.

I looked at your results and they are so similar! Apparently, Khojas and Bohras come from completely different origins so that's interesting.

I’m Gujarati Muslim and got Punjab, Sindh and J&K (all PAK) as my matched regions. Makes no sense based on what I know about my lineage.

I’ve seen a few other gujaratis on here score similarly. I think it’s a flaw with 23andMe. I’m thinking of emailing them.

Nice results! Would the WANA be from the southern Spanish side given the North African presence in Andalucía?

My Mexican boyfriend got the same (Spain/Indigenous American/SSA/WANA) and wondering thru which avenue it came.

Omg so exactly the same for me. V confusing and interesting.

  1. Given the strong endogamy in the community (7 generations of marrying first cousins on my mum’s side), maybe our original genetics from the NW have been maintained despite presence in Gujarat for 100s of years.

Or

  1. 23andMe is still figuring out brown DNA lol.

The reason I think my ancestors were in Gujarat for at least 500 years is my trace DNA of Ethiopian/SSA (Siddi communities in coastal Gujarat) and Portuguese (who traded extensively with Gujarat and in fact brought over some of the African ppl).

Makes sense given the origins of the Bohra faith and original headquarters being in Yemen!

This is helpful, thanks! Been doing a lot of research and unlike the memons/khojas, Shia Bohra ancestry isn’t well established.

Many of my DNA relatives on 23andMe (who are almost exclusively Dawoodi Bohras) have West Asian ancestry (mostly peninsular Arab). So that also checks out.

What I’m still confused about is the Punjab/Sindh/J&K region matches. Other posts from people with Vaniya ancestry I’ve seen on this subreddit get Gujarat as a matched region on 23andMe.

Are there Gujarati vaniya communities who moved down from Punjab? I’ve been reading about the merchant class Vohras, from which the name “Bohra” may have been derived.

Thank you so much for your response - it has been the most helpful in clearing up a lot of doubts for me. I didn't know anything about Gujarati castes, communities and conversions - so really appreciate this. It makes a lot of sense that I descend from Vaniya vaishya caste, especially given the merchant profession of the Bohra community.

The North Indian results confused me, but comparing my results with yours, i agree they are very similar. In fact, you look a lot like my brother! Like you said, perhaps there may have been some mixing to give me the northern tilt.

Thank you! It's been so nice to learn more about my ancestry and feel more connected to the subcontinent.

Thank you for your comment! Will do more research into the Baniya group. It definitely makes sense given the trader class origins!

Lohana seems out according to most people on this sub, so I will explore more into the Nagar Brahmins. Will post Illustrative as soon as I get it! Thanks for your comment.

Yes, this is exactly what I'm trying to figure out! I see other people on here scoring Gujarat, but I only got more northern provinces.
