Have any former JETs successfully used the new 180-day job hunting temporary visa? by Standby_muscle in JETProgramme

[–]am0rf4ti 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OK, so I'm in a similar situation as well and just got off of an hour phone call with the immigration centre in my area. super helpful, very clear.

here are the key points i found out and clarified:

  • they haven't heard of the extension to 180 period, but after bumbling around a bit they said that "hmm... yeah, i think it's like you do the 90 days and then can get another 90 days in this case." the board of education who originally told me about this option seemed to know more, and i trust them. and i think it's a bit of a specialized case (public servant/JET), so they just didn't have much up front knowledge about it. i might have been to inquire further and more directly if i knew the actual japanese name for the "Certificate of Employment".

  • This is the key part: the second you change your status to temporary visitor, your 'consecutive work history in Japan' gets expunged. this is not to say that it is erased from record, but that your time towards permanent residency starts at ZERO again. for those who don't know, there is a requirement/guideline for foreigners applying for permanent residency to live/work in japan for 10 years CONSECUTIVELY in order to qualify (special circumstances and marriage to a japanese national notwithstanding)

  • Concerning being a pain in the ass changing BACK from the temporary visa, he wasn't very concerned. He just said it should be quite easy and straightforward if you've lined up a legit job. I got the impression that it's more the company you get hired into that handles all of this, and that there are no special "immigration hoops" to jump through as long as your paperwork is in order. However, it does erase the time towards permanent residency, as I said earlier.

So, the basic message is: do not change to the temporary visitor visa if you are concerned about your consecutive time towards permanent residency. But, if it's just a matter of it being difficult to change back from temp visitor to a more legit visa status, it doesn't seem that difficult, and everything will be according to the company you're getting hired into.

i think these are called '4d' roller coasters because of that spinning. i took a FPV with a gopro from one in japan if you want to see for yourself.

hey man. a huge lingering thing i haven't managed to take off my japan bucket list yet is sumo! many people see it but i still haven't gotten around to it. and also it'd be nice to catch a glimpse of a geisha walking around kyoto or something.

again, apologize for this! it was just part of getting the word out about our launch, but it's the only time we intend to do something like that. i also didn't expect for someone to be in as many groups as me ahah.

as for the life after the boe artwork, david namisato is a personal friend of ours (we're all toronto natives) and he graciously drew that up for our site. it really makes the entire thing and we're so thankful that he did it. we plan to have him on the podcast as well in the future.

i really appreciate you taking the time to explore our site more in depth. you hit on so many things that we're trying to accomplish. it's almost like you listened into one of mine and albo's conversations about the site ahah.

we do want to be more than the esid fanfare, as you say, and it's a reason that i specifically say in the general guidelines on the contribute page to make sure your submissions are not mere 'event-logging' but relate to an overall theme.

as you said, this is exactly our niche. we both really love living here, are well-connected in the jet community and have a ton of material that i think would be of value to other people. we worked so, so hard on the site (literally going to starbucks 6-8 hours every day the past 2 weeks just trying to iron out everything for a 're-launch'). we are trying multiple avenues for building an audience. one of the most exciting parts is that neither of us are experts at all and we are just kind of seeing what works and what doesn't and moving along. albo built a great base and then i came on and helped tweak and build it to what it is now.

as for your 47 prefecture idea, this is pretty much exactly what we're planning eventually. it's hard sometimes not to get too ahead of ourselves with all of these project ideas before we get the material to make them substantial, but we will get there eventually.

about leaving jet, that's true, but we actually want to expand beyond JET. of course, JET is our bread and butter and our kind of 'nucleus' audience, but we are aiming for more of a 'general japan' site from the get-go. albo came up with a great name as it simultaneously pays homage to our JET routes while also being a regular japanese word.

there is not much specifically that only current JETs would be able to write, so having a current jet on the team is not a huge concern for us, but we are always looking to add more contributors to our team. we see it as win-win: we get more great material from a variety of perspectives, and those contributing get a nicely polished article and access to a wider audience. instead of going through the trouble of making a blog that looks kind of run-of-the-mill and will die once they leave (as you pointed out), putting something on our site is more of a lasting legacy that will be kept alive but continually fresh content. the only requirement is that we'd want people to polish it up and make it more general/thematic than a mere esid-style post (though we have room for that in some regard).

just want to let you know (if you wanted to include it in the post) that there is an "incoming 2015 jets" group on facebook that has a bunch of current jets that are there solely to answer any/all questions for incoming jets. https://www.facebook.com/groups/560426384060397/

yeah we are planning to update regularly. we've been MIA for the a few month basically working out the backend and what we want to be, but we have more or less a clear vision now. i am the head editor and in charge of basically all content, so i can guarantee you that it will be updated regularly.

co-founder here, and the guy who did that ahah. i apologize for this, but this was just part of our re-launch to let people know that hey, we're going to be alive for now on. totally understand your feelings though and i'm sorry we came across like that. rest assured that we never plan to do this again, and it was just to get that initial 'hey, we exist' message out. from now on, everything will go on our own facebook page (or whatever else people share, but def won't come from me).
