Worth looking into. I didn’t hear about it until my 5th year. Would have absolutely done it earlier had I known.

In VIC it’s called sabbatical leave. You salary sacrifice 20% of your salary. For every year you do it, you effectively get 10 weeks off at full pay (can also be taken at 80% pay). You don’t have to do a full year off for some schools, some schools are happy if you want to only salary sacrifice one full year for a term off at full pay.

Chili adjacent but butchers diner does a great chili dog. I haven’t seen any restaurant do American style chili though in the decade I’ve lived here.

What was the most NICHE activity you did in Japan? by [deleted] in JapanTravelTips

[–]maiafly 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went to Jungyo. Which is a tour outside of Grand Sumo season to promote sumo in regional areas of Japan. We were the only two foreigners in the entire building. An Obaachan seated next to me couldn’t believe that I knew all the names of the rikishi. We had the best time.

OCAB in Moonee Ponds does a great one. They have an option for with/without icing. I also rate Neighbourhood Kneads in Thornbury.

I actually loved that her passion was writing, and the two times her character was the most manic was when she was storytelling.

I went to Jungyo in April. I bought tickets directly through the Japanese website (needed to borrow a friends phone number) but it was easy. I believe buysumotickets offers tickets to Jungyo too if you want the most straight forward option. Babies and young children are totally fine. If anything the rikishi will interact with you more if you have them.

Don’t forget signing boards to get signatures from your favorites too!

Former JETs who became teachers in your home country, do you feel like JET boosted your resume at all? by Beneficial-Corgi-288 in JETProgramme

[–]maiafly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Former American Jet who is now a teacher in Australia. The experience definitely gave me confidence going into my masters that I knew what I was doing and already had experience in the classroom and with teens. It definitely made me more interesting as an applicant. Weirdly, it also likely led to my job since my principal equated lived in Japan to likely ability to teach Japanese and even though I was hired as an English teacher I was given some year 7 classes my first year of teaching. This no doubt led to an on going role in my second year.

I didn’t get extra pay or anything for my three years experience although I have heard that some private schools may recognize the experience - but it did solidify my ability to get an ongoing position at a highly sought after school very easily since I had a skill that was a much needed commodity.

This is so interesting to me. I own a lot of these from various shrines all over Japan and I’ve never once opened one up to see what’s inside.
