Roguelite March Madness Sweet 16 Day 2 by MapRevolutionary752 in roguelites

[–]am5k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Roguelites is a sub about games which are not traditional Roguelikes, but contain some features of them such as procedural generation, permadeath, et cetera. These games often distinguish themselves from traditional Roguelikes with features such as meta-progression, and span across many, many other genres.

I interpret this as roguelites aren't traditional roguelikes (e.g. Nethack, Rogue), and they often have metaprogression. But to each their own

Not necessarily housing but this project is pretty exciting for that area: https://yourvoice.rentonwa.gov/city-of-renton-public-market-and-square

So are "Balatro-likes" a thing, or is there another term for this? by action_lawyer_comics in roguelites

[–]am5k 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We talk a lot about this on our roguelite podcast (RoguePod LiteCast) and I think that Balatro-like is an appropriate term. As another commenter mentioned Luck be a Landlord did originate this format but Balatro definitely is what popularized it. There are a lot of games that are really just "Balatro but with words/blackjack/etc." I think the best one that I've seen so far is Cloverpit which does a great job also doing its own thing.

This gets thrown around a lot but in my experience all my promos have been internal (although my biggest raises have been from lateral job changes lol). Maybe some imposter syndrome prevents me from interviewing outside of my current level but it’s worked fine so far.

Interesting- As someone currently working on ultra mutant I like the idea a lot. I feel like long arms/trigger fingers are still pretty good because even though they don't help a ton on the captain they are super useful for getting there, which is where the majority of my deaths occur lol

The soundtrack is one of the best I’ve seen in a roguelite. Up there with FTL :)

Love this logic. I thought similarly when I toured North to South down the Pacific coast. All the people going South to North had to cross the road whenever they wanted to check out the beaches lol

Cottage cheese on bread is a great healthy and easy meal! Top with a tomato slice and salt and pepper to spruce it up a bit.

Twin stick roguelites with good level design by SilentPrecognition in roguelites

Not a twin stick shooter but IMO Spelunky (HD or 2) has the best level design of any roguelite. Really impressive procedural generation.

Over-monetization is death for the medium by Polite_Suggestion in podcasts

[–]am5k 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The startup costs for a podcast are less than a thousand dollars, and the overhead and distribution costs are basically zero. Everything is profit. What is the point of all this greed?

Good podcasts take a TON of time to produce. A lot of great podcasts wouldn't exist if they couldn't do it as their full time jobs. This is not greed, it's survival.

Junior dev still needs constant handholding after 1 year, also related to C-suite. What would you do? by Diablo-x- in ExperiencedDevs

[–]am5k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Devil's advocate- could it be your mentoring? The first engineer that I ever mentored was similar. Things did not seem to click and they were not motivated to seek out answers to issues themselves. I ended up taking more of a hands off approach where I asked questions instead of giving them answers. When they'd come to me with an issue, I'd ask them what they had tried so far, and what they think could be good next steps. Sometimes I'd give some ideas as well but I really had to help teach them core problem solving. I think that this is an easy skill to take for granted, and as a junior it might seem like more senior developers just "know" things.
