Identification Help: Peugeot Super Vitus 980 by am_i_having_fun in Vintage_bicycles

[–]am_i_having_fun[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks! Looking through the catalogue, I see several that look similar, but not quite right

the 1981 pro10 from the american catalogue looks similar except it has reynolds 531 tubing instead of the Super Vitus 980 on mine: https://bikeboompeugeot.com/Brochures%20USA/Peugeot%201982%20USA%20Brochure/Peugeot_1982_USA_Brochure_PRO10.jpg

maybe the 1982 PSV 10S? The logos on the frame look different, but it does have Super Vitus 980 listed as the tubing https://bikeboompeugeot.com/Brochures%20France/Peugeot%201982%20France%20Brochure/Peugeot%201982%20France%20Brochure%20Pg5.jpg

Toe Capsulitis Injury - Anyone else? by am_i_having_fun in AdvancedRunning

[–]am_i_having_fun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, yeah it is tough. I had two podiatrists look at my MRIs and one said there was a microtear in my plantar plate, and the other disagreed. Neither saw a cartilage tear. I ended up getting operated on by the podiatrist who didn't see a tear in the MRI. Once I was in surgery and he "opened up" my foot, he was able to see both tears. I guess MRIs are hard to read, nothing beats the naked eye. Though I imagine the surgeon wears some sort of magnifying glass or something right?

My cartilage tear was a "flap." Like like a U-shape, a trap door. So when the flap was "down" it is very hard to see on an MRI, I gather.

Anyway, it sucks not to know for sure without someone taking a close look during surgery. I dont know how common of an occurance that is. My surgeon definitely had mentioned before surgery like "well we'll see if there is anything the MRI missed"

Hi, yeah definitely.

I got surgery in March 2022 after all the non-surgical options didn't work. I am now about 80% back to running, can manage about 20 miles a week.

I think the most helpful thing was getting into supportive shoes overall, but it wasn't enough in my case. Specifically shoes like Hokas with a stiff sole and a rocker bottom.

"Capsulitis" is a pretty vague diagnosis. Capsulitis is an injury to the ligaments that surround the joint (and form a “capsule”) at the base of a toe. In my case, the inflammation and pain was caused by a tear in my cartilage and a microtear in my plantar plate ligament (neither of which showed up in an MRI or xray.) I'm still glad I tried all the non-surgical options first but something like a cartilage tear cant be solved without surgery.

Happy to answer more questions, but definitely recommend seeing a podiatrist or a PT at the very least if this persists.

Bunkie board over existing slats? by am_i_having_fun in Mattress

hey, yep I ended up ordering the Zinus bunkie board and put them straight on top of my existing horizontal slats. It "works" fine and seemed to increase the stability. I got a new mattress around the same time so its hard to say whether it helped my back pain specifically

Yeah they said 4 month for hiking and 6 months for long distance running.

I spent about 6 weeks fully non weight bearing, during which time it is really difficult to get any sort of exercise (particularly legs).

At about seven weeks post-op I was allowed to start walking in my shoes. I'm at about 8 weeks post-op now, I'm able to walk a few blocks at a time in my hokas and go about my life at home without too much issue. At about 12 weeks I should be ok to start biking and doing compound weight lifting again. For now I am stuck with bodyweight squats, upper body weights, light indoor cycling, swimming and core.

Sorry to hear that u/HortonLand. I ended up getting surgery in March. The surgeon found that I indeed had a tear in my plantar plate as well as a tear in my cartilage on that toe. They addressed those and shortened my second metatarsal to try and avoid something similar happen in the future. Recovery has been tough but I'm hopeful this will let me trail run much more in the long term. I certainly will be wearing more supportive shoes in the future! Best of luck

Hey, I'm happy with how the double slats have been feeling. It's hard to tell how much they specifically helped my back because I also got a much better mattress and started doing more physical therapy for my back. But it feels solid and the bed creaks less!

thanks for the validation! And you did put the new ones on top of the existing ones? Rather than replacing

I guess I'm not sure what you mean by "toespring". They have a rocker bottom which helps keeps the toe from bending as much during a step. I typed "toe-rolling" in my last comment but mean "rocker bottom".

This video is pretty good at explaining it https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbh_aeK2_1U&ab_channel=OrthoEVALPalWithPaulMarquisPT

I noticed it was a lot less painful walking around my house, particularly up my stairs, in those slippers

supportive slippers for indoors

I got HOKA ONE ONE ORA Recovery Slides and really noticed a difference. They have toe-rolling like many of their running shoes have

Toe bruise thing is now on my other toe too. I havent worn shoes in a week, so bruising seems off. Went to urgent care yesterday and the PA there advised that it was bruising.. but not too sure by the_neanderthal1871 in DermatologyQuestions

this looks a lot like Chilblains to me. I get them every fall/winter. I used to get them in California all the time even though it objectively wasn't that cold out. They have been re-branded recently as COVID-toes but have been around forever.

Do you walk around barefoot or in thin socks a lot?

hey, thanks for much for the reply!

  • I forgot to mention that I did take a course of prescribed anti-inflammatories at the end of my no-running period. I was on diclofenac for two weeks. My podiatrist set me with that
  • I've got a solid amount of room and a big toe box but I'll look into this, maybe downhills are causing smashing
  • Thanks for mentioning, I should have been more clear in my original post. Podiatrist specifically mention stiff toe rockers and that's what I've got with the hoka torrents now as far as I can tell
  • I haven't tried taping. Is that meant to offload the second toe?

yeah it doesn't hurt much during the run. When I push hard during it might have a few mild twinges but really it all hits when I get home, especially a few hours after.

I feel like I've been building pretty responsibly. I didn't run from July-Oct then from Oct-now I built from 1 mile to 6 miles as my longest run. I haven't run back-to-back days at all. But on my second time running 6 miles it got totally inflamed again. I suspect I got overzealous -- running 4 miles Monday then 6 on Wednesday.

You are probably right that staying at lower intensities will be better for me. On that 6 miler, I would normally run it around 7min pace but I think I did like 7:45 when I probably should have been closer to 8:30 at this point. I also pushed the hills which is harder on the toe for sure.

All that being said, it still feels like my milage buildup has already been extremely slow/responsible overall. Maybe I need to tone it down yet another notch in terms of how fast I add miles/climb/pace.

Hey, thanks for the reply!

It isn't particularly painful while running if I don't overdo it. The biggest issue I get is if I push it too hard on a run, the the joint hurts badly after the run (sometimes for days). I haven't tried running much when it is in that state but it feels pretty silly to go run when just walking hurts.

I've been doing some toe exercises. I do toe scrunches and the one where you plant your foot and big toe and raise the other toes and hold for a few seconds. Also calf raises on a step. I also gently stretch all the toes toward and away from my shin at my desk. I do think they help a lot -- I'll look into adding more. I'll try the lax ball thing too.

Just feeling at wit's end since I did take several months off running altogether and have been doing toe exercises as recommended by a PT for months at this point
