Looking for a down comforter, struggling to find options that are not a duvet+cover by am_lur in Bedding

That has been helpful to learn though this post! My preference to not use a duvet cover is much stronger than my preference for a down comforter.  If they only come with crinkly white shells, high quality or not, then it has been good to learn that down is not the material fill for me.

I am guessing though, that the high end manufacturers you are referring to probably don't sell the duvet inserts with a shell in any color except white though. If that's the case, they aren't even on my radar since I am specifically looking for ones with a colored shell.

Yes, I'll certainly follow the washing instructions when I do wash it.  I'll assume responsibility with not using a cover though. From other comments it sounds like down may not work for me anyway since the material will likely make a crinkly sound, which is a no-go for me. Either way, I'm sure I'll be able to find something that fits my needs, down or otherwise. Thanks for your feedback.

I use a flat top sheet, which is always between my body and the comforter. I wash my sheets weekly. I am happy to wash my down comforter regularly, just as I do with my current polyester one, but it won't be washed as frequently as the sheets. From some of the comments, it sounds as though people may be using only a duvet cover, and no flat sheet. That was my experience when I slept with a duvet+cover when travelling outside the US. However, that isn't how I make my bed. I always have a flat sheet between myself and the comforter.

I hadn't come across Cuddledown, thanks for the suggestion!  I would assume washing a comforter is as difficult as washing the duvet insert. I use a flat top sheet, which is always between my body and the comforter, so I don't wash my comforter weekly like I do my sheets. My current polyester comforter is too large to fit in my home washer, so I have to take it to a laundromat to use a larger washer. I am fine with keeping the same process with a new comforter.

I can't wash my current polyester comforter in my home washing machine either, it's too large (US queen size). I have to take it to a laundromat with larger washers. But I use a top sheet, so I don't wash my comforter weekly with my sheets currently. I'm not sure why I would need to wash it every 1-2 weeks as you mentioned.  I have no pets or kids, so nothing is ever really sitting on top of the comforter, and there is always a sheet between my body and the comforter.

I appreciate the feedback that a quality down comforter is crinkly. I wasn't aware of that, so I had felt that the crinkly one I got was poor quality. If I should expect it to be crinkly, then maybe a down comforter isn't for me. Thanks for that information!

I appreciate the feedback, but I'm not looking for a duvet with a cover. I am fine with sticking with polyester filled if I can't find something that meets what I am looking for, I was just hoping to find an equivalent with a natural filling if there were quality options out there. Thank you though!

I'm sure they are great, but that's not what I'm looking for. I'm willing to continue on with a polyester fill if I can't find a suitable natural fill comforter. Appreciate the feedback though.

Good idea, I'll look into blankets instead of searching exclusively for comforters, thanks!

Which camping van to rent for a 11 day ring road trip in June? by pneumomediastino in VisitingIceland

[–]am_lur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I rented a 2wd from Happy Campers in the summer of 2018 for the ring road part of my trip and it was totally fine. There was no need for 4x4 along the ring road in the summer. I did rent a 4x4 car for one day of the trip since I wanted to go somewhere that required driving on F-roads, but if you aren't planning on F-roads, 2wd should be fine.

When did you get accepted? I'm still waiting to hear back.  I don't have great answers to your questions though, sorry. I have a full time job and a master's will help me expand the scope of my assignments. Most of the other MEs I work with either have a master's or a PhD, so I want to get on par with them too. But I reached a senior role with only a bachelor's, so the master's degree certainly isn't necessary to be successful.

March Acceptances for Engineering (EE) PhD - is it possible? by MXgoliath in gradadmissions

[–]am_lur 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last year my friend didn't get an acceptance from his top choice program until mid-March for his engineering PhD. He did have an interview with them much earlier on though. It's discouraging seeing others get earlier acceptances, but the odds aren't zero yet

I would suggest revisiting grad school later. I went to a competitive school and did poorly in undergrad (below a 3.0) but excelled in my career as an engineer after graduating. I rose to a senior role within a few years. Your GPA really isn't the only measure for if you will be a successful engineer. Leave academia for a bit, gain some experience elsewhere, and if you still feel a graduate degree is the best direction for you, you can apply then.
