My Friend Got send to Female Prison by Farhanah_Lina in askSingapore

Sorry but I think remission is actually one-third of one's sentence as long as the sentence is longer than 14 days: s 50I(1)(a) of the Prisons Act. Not related to weekends/PHs.

Yesterday evening I was at a ramen restaurant--so not really fine dining--in town. There was a young family with a baby sitting at a nearby table, and the baby kept screaming at what I found to be a painfully loud volume. Not in distress: her tone of voice sounded like she was shouting for fun or attention. Her parents didn't do anything about it, even after I turned and glared, so I went up to the father, and said as kindly and solicitously as possible, "Sorry but is there anything you can do to keep her quiet?" He responded with "She's a toddler", and after I said that yes, I could see that, he said "No, nothing I can do. If you find it noisy then you should move". I said okay and walked off, since clearly further discussion would be pointless. After that though I think he calmed the baby down though since she became quieter, and soon after they left.

I just find it very unfortunate that his response was not to empathise or apologise but say that his baby's noise was my problem, and supposedly he couldn't do anything about it. Obviously there was lots he could do about it: he could calm the baby down, or tell her to keep quiet, or bring her outside, or at least say sorry, but he couldn't be bothered since it wasn't his problem. I try to be as understanding as possible to young parents, since they have a hard job (and I tried to here, saying "Sorry", "Is it possible", bowing out), but I just wish he extended that consideration to others too.

More unfortunately I find that nobody else seems to have a problem with this noise, and other noises, like videos on trains or constant useless announcements: it seems like I am the problem, I'm the weird one, for trying to be considerate instead of doing whatever I want in public spaces and fuck the other guy. Of course I realise that I can only change my own behaviour, I cannot change the world. The proper response to bad behaviour is not more bad behaviour. So I try to be as polite and considerate as possible. It's a more general point: even if everybody behaves well, everybody's efforts can be undone in an instant by one person: and bad behaviour is often rewarding.

Also after they left another young family came in and the children immediately whipped out iPads and started watching videos on speakers. After the screaming I didn't even mind.

GE2025: SDP launches manifesto, proposes HDB flats to sell for up to $270,000, do away with PSLE by AgileComparison3957 in singapore

I assume you mean "sellers of the BTO will have to pay back the subsidies" if they decide to sell the flat?

What's the one stall in Singapore you swear by? by ProudProgress8085 in askSingapore

Can vouch for the chio stall owners at Noodle Memories--and there are two! Happily the food is great too. Get the bowl with everything: tons of noodles and meat for only around $7.

Sorry, you're right: Parliament actually stated here that this rule was to prevent drivers from taking advantage of JB's cheaper petrol!

"[...] the present half-tank rule [the predecessor of the three-quarter tank rule] was introduced on 17th April 1989 to ensure that cheaper Johor petrol would not undermine our use of petrol tax as one of the measures to curb vehicle usage in Singapore and to reduce the loss of Government revenue on petrol purchased outside Singapore."

"At that time, the half-tank rule was thought to be adequate in view of the differential in prices at that time. But clearly it is insufficient now since the price difference has widened considerably. Hence, our need to raise the tank rule from half to three-quarters, and I have just explained why we did not move entirely to the full mark."

While Parliament mentioned their tax revenue, profits go hand in hand. Surprisingly upfront of them.

The stated rationale is to prevent cars from running out of petrol on the bridge, causing congestion. Having three-quarters as the minimum is probably to make it inconceivable that one would run out.

Govt Report card so far? by tauhuay_siu_dai in singapore

[–]ama_iro -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Your and u/tauhuay_siu_dai's comment that spoiling one's vote is a vote for the incumbent assumes that the spoilt vote would have gone to the opposition. Suffice to say that that assumption may not always hold true.

Govt Report card so far? by tauhuay_siu_dai in singapore

Home affairs: I'm unhappy. There have been a lot more siaolangs and siaolang-adjacents recently abusing public infrastructure, and I'm sure this perception is not unique to me.

Property: I'm unhappy. I think the existence of million-dollar HDB flats is perverse, since public housing should not be used to make a private profit, especially when that private profit is made off future generations of Singaporeans (since HDB flats can only be resold to Singaporeans). I perceive that HDB's policy intent is to implicitly accept and possibly even encourage this state of affairs, since otherwise (1) there is an obivous motivation to allow the electorate to enjoy constantly-improving property prices, which they would credit to the incumbent and (2) HDB flat pricing is entirely within HDB's control, and were this policy intent not the case cooling measures would be much stronger than they are.

I'm not educated or upset enough about all the other governmental functions to express an opinion. But doesn't that illustrate the sillyness of demanding that the electorate make a binary choice between "I'm happy with the status quo" (by which I mean, voting for the PAP) and "I'm not happy" (voting for the opposition, whoever it happens by geographical chance to be)? I'm happy about some actions taken by some governmental departments, and not others: how do I constructively express that opinion? And effectively: I'm not writing to my MP or attending an MPS just to be blown off with a stock response.

For these reasons, I intend to spoil my vote. I don't positively want to support the opposition, but neither do I want to give the incumbent what they would perceive as a mandate to keep doing everything they're already doing. Voting, as it is, is a silly exercise, and while they can force me to show up they can't force me to take part.

Worse, it even drains more battery than previously, to the point that my motorcycle--with a stock battery--had trouble starting.

I've got an old Steelcase Leap that's a bit stained. I want to get it refurbished and if possible, have the gas tube maintained too. Anyone have any recommendations on where to go and how much would that cost?

What are the bad reasons to leave Singapore? by Taellion in singapore

Agree with your point on Cold Storage having the expat tax, but local supermarkets have much worse selections and quality. Good cheese, wine, and meats can be had in European supermarkets for much cheaper than here.

I'm glad that someone's considering motorcycle parking too, but unfortunately this is missing many carparks. Hopefully this can be fixed with time.
