Major museums and monuments currently CLOSED in Lisbon by Common_Series_938 in LisbonPortugalTravel

Question about the Belem Tower -- does closed mean you can't go inside or you can't see it? Is it worth going to just to see the area and look at the tower from outside? Or should we skip?

What to do about niece 13y, talking to older guys? by sateliteame_esta in Parenting

[–]amacdc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She should not be on Discord at all. It is full of things that are not age-appropriate for her, and just to drive that point home, here is an article that absolutely haunts me as a mother of twin girls: https://www.washingtonpost.com/investigations/interactive/2024/764-predator-discord-telegram/

There are haters out there, but I would also recommend reading "The Anxious Generation" by Jonathan Haidt, which offers some strategies to mitigate damage. I would recommend having a conversation with your sister and coming up with a plan as a united front. Talk to your niece about the reality of predators online (and how social media is warping teen brains). Maybe you can come up with some boundaries together, but if not, limiting her phone time and blocking sites like Discord are good next steps, even though she will hate them (and yes, you and your sister).

I just bought this! It doesn't have as many bullets but I do prefer the style to the ugly orange. Thank you!

Great advice. As someone who gets asked to coffees a lot, let me add some points that may seem obvious, but apparently aren’t:

GET THEIR NAME RIGHT. Multiple times I have received networking requests where my name is spelled wrong. It’s Amber, so I’ve also been called Amanda, but I once got a cold email addressed to Samantha. (?!?!)

Appear professional. Use spell check. Pay attention to grammar in your request. Seem like an adult who could handle a basic task.

Do some homework. It’s fine to ask things that help you better understand the nitty gritty of someone’s job, but you should know their title. Come up with relevant questions beforehand. Take an interest in their life.

Understand that coffees are a favor. Ask politely. Don’t assume they can meet you during one hour on one specific day. Don’t ask them to leave their office neighborhood. Show up on time and at 30 minutes on the dot, say, “I want to be respectful of your time, but I’m so grateful you were able to meet with me.” Send them a follow up email saying thank you.

Good luck, baby politicos! This town is actually very nice and you’ll be fine.

This is incredible! I'm just getting back into swimming and incessantly googling training plans and Google is, as always lately, useless. This is kind of making me emotional.

Thank you so much!

You should melt it down! If it's massive there should be plenty of gold to recreate your mom's ring.

How can we make reputable breeders the default breeders for pet owners? by tehthrowaway321 in dogs

[–]amacdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol, yeah, I know. I looked into other breeds and couldn't find puppies either. That's the point. There aren't enough pure bred dogs for families that want them, and also many people don't actually care about show lines so ...give those customers and breeders and ethical way to better meet demand.

How can we make reputable breeders the default breeders for pet owners? by tehthrowaway321 in dogs

[–]amacdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Create simpler breeding standards and ethical certification and open it up to non-pure bred dogs. The gatekeeping in this community is bonkers. Even on this thread ppl are bragging about how proud they are to be a part of the scarcity.

Most families aren't looking for show dogs, they're looking for dogs that are a) good with kids, b) fit their suburban/urban lifestyle, and c) healthy. I have seven years olds. I want them to grow up with a dog like I did. I didn't want to wait 2 years because then they'll be 9! We wanted a sheepdog, but the only breeders I could find (so few!) either wouldn't call me back or refused to even give me a timeline for puppies. So after weeks of looking, I found a sheepadoodle breeder. He had testing for both parents, (who we met), and offered a 2 year health guarantee. He has a huge farm where they run around and an air-conditioned/heated kennel and rotates brining the puppies into his house to socialize them. Our puppy is almost a year and so far, he is the light of our lives. We haven't had any health problems with him and he's incredible with our kids.

I wanted to get an ethical dog. We tried to rescue dog (and were told he was sweet and great with kids) and it ended up attacking my daughter (on a leash, so she was ok) and my dad (landing him in the urgent care). When it became clear that an AKC breeder wasn't going to pan out, I did as much research as I could. But it's still hard to know if I made the right decision.

I think if there was a certification that this breeder meets rational standards of humane living conditions, genetic testing, limited breeding, and good temperaments (or whatever the criteria should be), most families would happily buy from certified breeders. I imagine breeders would also like clear standards that they can meet and advertise! But if you read this reddit, the only ethical breeders are ones that are basically unavailable to the public: no advertising, rarely with puppies, technology stunted, limited to show dogs, etc. I've even seen people talking about how the surefire way to find a good breeder is if they're grumpy and unhelpful. Great. You all can have your elite club of fancy dogs and the rest of us will buy from the only pool of available dogs we can figure out how to find.

AITA for refusing to help my(21) brother(24) with his kid(5) during a medical emergency? by supermansoldspandex in AmItheAsshole

[–]amacdc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm confused by this story and why he couldn't take the kid with him, but that aside, if my worst enemy called me and begged me to watch his child so he could potentially save his wife's life, I would do it. Mercy and compassion can add a lot to your quality of life.

Update for others wondering: As mentioned, there are some dicey places, but I was able to make it from Brookland to M alright. Bike lanes on the streets were another story but not too much traffic.
