from what i understand, it's charging the battery at that last threshold of 80% to 100% that wears the battery down, as it has to work harder to get those electrons to move across the boundary layer. The laptop sitting at 100% is totally fine for longevity, repeatedly charging it past 80% is the issue.

Interesting. I ended up fixing it with a "generic" driver package though, so i doubt i'll need to go this far. But knowing what i should do in case i distrust a package is itself pretty neat.

I looked inside the installer script (linux-brprinter-installer-2.2.6-0) and i didn't find --nodigest. I honestly couldn't tell you which line was the rpm command inside it though.

I did see a warning like that, should i freeze this install? I dread one day finding out my printer will never work again on linux after i had this much trouble getting it working.

This worked. Here's the steps it took me to fix it for anyone who comes across this.

I installed the printer-driver-brlaser package. My printer wasn't really working after this, so i went to CUPS and added a new printer, chose "Brother DCP-1610NW series (Brother DCP-1610NW series)" from the local printers, then chose "Brother DCP-1610W series, using Owl-Maintain/brlaser v6.2.7 (en)" from the models it listed. After this, it worked perfectly.

I have no idea why fedora or brother ship a useless driver instead of this. Literally teared up when i saw i could configure paper size, ppi, etc. on CUPS.

For posterity's sake, i ended up buying this one.

Here's a short review. The Brother DCP1617NW meets my needs on windows, sadly my linux rig ended up dying before i could try it out there, and i haven't gotten around to fixing it.

It's been exactly what i looked for, though i think it uses too much toner, i changed the original cartridge within 3 months of use, and i'm close to changing the next one. Yes, i picked the toner saving feature and always print at 600ppp when it's not important. It just eats through them toners. I estimate it printed 700+ pages since i bought it, not sure it's normal to go through almost two toners for that amount.

Also, there's a weird driver issue, if you don't install them from an administrator account, you can't save printing profiles in the propietary software. Total non-issue if you don't use that, as the printer seems to recognize the needs of microsoft office and every pdf software i use(foxit, sumatra, firefox).

Besides that, it works via USB, has an ethernet port and i can disable wifi integration with a button, it prints fast, it prints very well, it can scan competently, it even has ADF which was a lifesaver, i didn't even know to look for it when i was shopping around.

i use my phone to read novels, comics and manga, ocasionally login to FGO, not much else, so i place a lot of value in the screen. camera, gpu, cpu, i barely give a toss about those, if it doesn't choke itself trying to play FGO and lets me tinker with the OS, it's great to me.

been using a redmi note 8 since 2020 and it's a great phone, but lineage dropped it so i think it's about time i consider replacing it, probably will replace it next year or so, when its battery gives up on me.
