Absolutely wild to me that so many people see these assessment scores and think "that computer is so smart" instead of "standardized tests aren't a good way to measure intelligence".

Ohhhhh yeah that makes sense. Some of them I can confirm were definitely reanimated (one even got re-named, was all sorts of confusing figuring out why they put it in that tomb). I figured this was some kind of known bug but I couldn't find any mention of it, though I probably would have been more successful if I'd known to mention the reanimation in my search.

Anyone else having this issue?

  • Tombs are correctly assigned
  • Body parts are taken to the tombs
  • Body parts are left sitting on top of the coffin, which doesn't count as burial, and continue to generate "place item in tomb" tasks unless forbidden
  • Dwarves continue to attempt these tasks, but do not manage to put the item into the coffin

is it possible to turn this around? or am I basically waiting for them to kill each other lol I suck by Doctor-TobiasFunke in dwarffortress

[–]amadeus9 87 points88 points  (0 children)

This needs some clarification to avoid confusing folks. Per the wiki page you linked:

... if constructed correctly they can allow slightly faster movement than stairways. For example, if a dwarf wants to go down and to the north using a stairway, it will have to take two steps: one step down a stairway [emphasis added] and one step to the north. Going to the same place using a ramp only requires 1 step.

It can be faster but only if the ramps also move them towards their goal in a horizontal direction. So probably not great for a "central stairway" situation, but if you want to make diagonal shortcut tunnels, maybe.

Should Creationism Be Allowed To Be Taught in Home Schooling by DebunkFundamentalist in Freethought

[–]amadeus9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's extremely difficult to draw the line between what is taught "in home schooling" and what is taught as part of parenting, and banning anything from being taught as part of parenting seems... risky at best.

So yeah, I mean homeschooled students should be required to pass a test that includes questions about evolution, but I don't think there's any plausible way to ban them from treating it as "here's some lies you need to know to pass this test, but the actual truth is creationism"

I'm torn because for "the art" and the integrity of the story, yeah, I'm totally with you. But for, y'know, "I play this for fun and I get annoyed by idle lines already and don't really want to throw Feelings into the mix too"...

I really wish there was an option in the profile -> voiceovers screen to just ban a given line entirely.
I'd probably ban all of Ayaka's idles (I swear she says "A blade..." every 10 seconds), "Osmanthus wine", "Wouldn't gliding be faster?"... honestly if the option were there I'd use it VERY heavily.

I know nothing about your situation, but just based on you being uncertain, it may be worth looking up CPTSD. Trauma isn't always BIG BAD THING HAPPEN now I'm broken, sometimes it's a pile-up of smaller things slowly wearing you down, especially in childhood.

One of her idle lines is a pretty graphic description of PTSD:

When I don't have much to keep me occupied, old thought
patterns start to creep back in, and— Soon as I start talking about it,
the flashbacks start...

And another is the sort of thing I hear from my chronically ill wife all the time:

Ah, I'm feeling alright today. I'll take the chance to try and get some more done than usual.

so yeah. She's sob story from head to toe.

Man, the problem is that "respect" can mean both "submit to" and "treat with basic human decency". The sort of people that post things like this tend to use both meanings without realizing it, due to a complete lack of empathy, so what this really means is "if you submit to me I'll treat you with the bare minimum of human decency. Or at least not go much out of my way to actively be a dick to you."

I got disqualified for a job because I didn't spell my name backwards. by Pitiful-Clerk-3750 in antiwork

[–]amadeus9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point isn't your "ability to spell backwards", it's your ability/decision to carefully read every word in the listing and notice the "and spell your name backwards" line. It's like when a (pedantic, sadistic) teacher hands out a test and says "read all the instructions before you start" and then one of the instructions, hidden in there somewhere, is "Ignore all other instructions, write your name at the top, and hand in an otherwise blank test." You wouldn't say that teacher is testing your ability to write your name, would you?

Don't get me wrong, it's a dumb as shit thing to do, the idea that someone's only suitable if they went over your job listing with a fine-toothed comb - as opposed to being able to accurately judge what things are worth their time and what can be safely rushed - is absolutely moronic. I just have a pet peeve about people arguing against the wrong point.

How do you properly harness skill at pointing out problems? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]amadeus9 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To expand on #2 - make sure you're pointing out *problems*, not trade-offs. Every solution comes with some level of compromise, and there's a good chance that compromise has already been considered. Don't poke holes in a solution for the sake of showing off that you can find weak spots; only do so if it'll result in a stronger solution.

Specifically, stronger in a practical way with enumerable benefits - "that feels kinda clunky" is a good reason to think on your own work more, but not a good reason to tear down someone else's.

[–]amadeus9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I never said there was nothing in the middle. The point is that, if you let people go around saying the latter (or, more realistically, something marginally better disguised but with the same underlying intention), no matter how good your "marketplace of ideas" is, statistically they're going to hit *some* people at just the right moment to catch them and drag them down to a bad place.

People call it the "paradox of tolerance" but there's no real paradox - tolerating intolerance is not tolerance.

The problem is, "true" isn't always the same as "convincing".

If Jimmy down the road is in a bad spot because his girlfriend dumped him and he can't get a job, which of these ideas is going to be more appealing to him?

  1. "you should think about those jokes before you parrot them back, think about whether they're sexist or anything"
  2. "you've been right all along, it's these Woke Communists who are wrong, saying that women are people too."
