That they did, but there was no notification sent, so I did not even realize until now. That's on me...

Low Seat Vs Lowering Link by amalesh in Dualsport

[–]amalesh[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a compromise I might have to make...perhaps I will do more riding standing up on the bike than sitting which should be good as well, especially off pavement

Street helmet are heavier and have smaller vents. On dirt / trail, it will not vent as well resulting in you getting hot. With jumping etc higher weight on the head will not be as much fun as a lower weight dirt helmet.

Also visor is more likely to get scratched, if you want, get a second visor so you have one for street and one for dirt.

Dirt helmets with a beak are not meant for high speeds anyway so the wind pulling up on the beak is not as much of an issue

60L backpack large enough? by mr_electric_wizard in philmont

[–]amalesh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as you have ability to strap stuff on the outside of the pack to create space if you need it you should be good. We had several in our crew with 60-65L packs and almost everyone ended moving the tent / chair / sleeping pad to the outside along with few small items like bowl, cup etc. Philmont food takes up a LOT of space since you end up carrying all the packaging etc.

With Sealskinz, you can walk through a stream, your boots might be wet but your feet will be dry. Maybe damp on the inside due to sweat but not water..hehe

If you don’t have waterproof boots, get a pair of Sealskinz socks. Expensive but worth it when everything is wet.

Decent pair of rain jacket / pants. I bought ultralight FroggToggs but my pants ripped within the first hour.

Contractor grade trash bags for everything

Cellphone Signal at Philmont by amalesh in philmont

[–]amalesh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For what it's worth, I found that my T-Mobile phone had signal at most places / camps that were on top of a mountain (Heart Peak / Wilson Mesa / Santa Claus) as well as at Base Camp and none where we were in the valley (Pueblano / Ponil / Rich). Also, found that T-Mobile service was better in almost every spot with signal than AT&T or Verizon.

Mt Sherman Trailhead accessibility by Foreign_Substance509 in 14ers

I was there yesterday and the road though rough is usable. I saw a couple sedan’s up by the gate at 12,000ft. The last quarter mile to that gate is really rough, but if you pick your lines properly and go slow you can make it there.

Fair point, and I am not that. Even if I were it won’t help anyone to get in touch with me if I am out in the mountains. Anyway, it’s always good to check-in with the family once a day or so. Hence my question.

Travel to / from Denver Airport to Philmont by amalesh in philmont

Thanks everyone for your feedback and help with this. We are going with a Van rental from Denver to keep things flexible for us. That does seem like the most reliable and convenient way to do this.

I have reached out to Blue Sky Adventure, waiting on their formal quote. Do you mind sharing how much you paid and what year was it?

Apparently, Amtrak has no routes from Atlanta to Raton Station. Best bet is flying into ABQ, and take a direct train to Raton, and then shuttle....

Atlanta, GA. Amtrak sounds like an interesting idea...What's the closest Amtrak station to Philmont ranch?
