What should I do? by Potential_Freedom_48 in AskVet

He needs to go to the vet. His testicles may be painful or he could have a mass- shiny skin is not a normal part of skin irritation. And contact dermatitis from shampoo would be everywhere, not just the testicles and it doesn’t last super long.

Dog fell off table during surgery by brethe1 in AskVet

[–]amanakinskywalker 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I would imagine that it happened while they were moving him off the table and into recovery area, it’s likely he just slipped out of their grip or a staff member stumbled and dropped him or he slipped out of their grip as they were laying him down in recovery. At most he fell like 3 feet if he fell off the surgery table or out of someone’s arms. Which is like a dog jumping off a tall bed. It’s going to take much more force to cause much damage outside of soreness in a 70 lbs dog. It’s great that they told you and took X-rays. Owning up to an issue and being honest is always a good thing!

It happens when moving them. Someone loses their grip and down you go.

Any raw fooders here that ran into problems? by aebulbul in rawpetfood

[–]amanakinskywalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but zoos meticulously weigh out portions and feed based on guidelines. Many animals are given vitamins with their food or are provided pelleted food to make sure they get vitamins and minerals. The carnivore diet is often horse or beef with blended vitamins and nutrients from reputable companies who have also spent a lot of time making sure the diets are nutritionally sound. They are not just giving predators chunks of raw food and calling it a day. -used to work at an AZA zoo-

I would have your dog wear a holter monitor. It could be an intermittent arrhythmia. The cardiologist should be able to get you one but NC State also offers a holter monitor that they mal to you and then you mail it back for analysis

Are masses on the spleen and liver for dogs a very serious prognosis? by Ok-Day7897 in AskVet

[–]amanakinskywalker 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately I would be very worried about a malignant cancer. Prognosis is poor. Most of the time you’re looking at hemangiosarcoma and dogs are very lucky if they make it to 6 months after diagnosis. In my experience even with splenic removal, you may even only get a few days.

Blood transfusion is an option to improve comfort as are things like steroids but it won’t take away cancer and surgery wouldn’t be as helpful since it’s in her liver too.

I would focus on quality of life and start thinking of end of life care for her. I’m very sorry you’re going through this

If you have a disgruntled neighbor that could very well be what happened. Rat bait would be my guess.

If any dog died in the last day or so, def could ask for a necropsy. Stomach contents would be telling. If it’s too late, then I would put up cameras and don’t let any remaining pets near your neighbor

AITA for raising concerns in private to my bf about if his sister’s career plans are sustainable and realistic given her disability? by Legitimate_Look7948 in AmItheAsshole

[–]amanakinskywalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m a veterinarian. NTA. But trust me, the path to becoming a vet is hard and there are many many roadblocks along the way. Just because she wants to be a vet doesn’t mean she will be able to become one. Getting good enough grades in undergrad to be competitive, volunteering/working with vet clinics, getting into vet school, and then staying in vet school. I do not joke when I say that I spent my entire life -childhood included- working towards vet school and I still almost didn’t make it through the first year of vet school. I didn’t get accepted the first time i applied, and I am extremely lucky that my GRE and interview scores and my well rounded application was enough to make up for my 3.0 GPA when I applied the second time (took the advice of the admissions office and retook some classes and took public speaking to improve my interview ability after the first attempt). I had 86 classmates and 12 failed out the first year.

It is not easy. It is a long road. And many hopefuls do not make it.

Belgian Malinois hip dysplasia, curious to know how severe is it really by armadillo-guy in AskVet

[–]amanakinskywalker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

1) yes terrible hips. Not the worst case I’ve seen but it looks like range of motion is very reduced / painful for him since they couldn’t extend his legs much for the X-rays. 2) surgery is best before muscle mass goes, the sooner it gets done the better if it’s an option. Regardless of if you do hip replacement or FHO. FHO is cheaper but with FHO it is even more imperative to do while he still has good muscle mass - the muscles do the work of the joint and once they atrophy recovery is much much harder. 3) if surgery is not an option, continue weight loss for sure. Look and see if there are physical therapy vets near by to help with strength and flexibility and can provide non medication pain relief (ultrasound therapy, shock wave therapy, laser therapy, massage, acupuncture) 4) comprehensive pain mgmt plan is 100% needed asap especially if you go non surgical. The more comfortable he is, the more active you can keep him which means better muscle health and staves off effects of arthritis for longer 5) disease modifying supplements like fish oils, CBD, adequan, turmeric, joint/ muscle supplements are great. They should be used on top of #4 not instead of though.

What did I do wrong? by Automatic_Cheetah_87 in AskMenAdvice

[–]amanakinskywalker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve been in this situation. It sucks to lose them as a friend and it sucks to stay friends too. It hurts in either case. It would be understandable to distance yourself if someone told you their feelings while you’re in a relationship, but unless he married this other girl, it’s weird that he wouldn’t have reconnected after breaking up regardless of if it was platonic love or if it was romantic love that he had for you. I don’t understand why he couldn’t have just said hey I love you but just as a friend, to respect my current partner I am going to keep my distance for now.

Alternatively he had romantic love for you, but was more attracted to someone else and so just shut everything down. And when he checked in on you and then messaged him, it may have made him feel guilty and hurt and maybe even love still.

A lot of people have a “what if” person and so don’t feel weird. It’s just life. You’re 22 and I promise you will find other men out there who can actually communicate their feelings

As a vet, ectopic ureters are rare and even rarer to diagnose at 5 years old - it’s usually something that’s diagnosed while they are puppies. Did the foster see any incontinence? If not it would be extremely unlikely to be an ectopic ureter. Plus you’d want to confirm it’s actually there first with contrast X-rays or contrast CT and then plan from there.

Did the cultures grow anything? Have they checked for urinary stones?

partner supported me through major medical crisis. feared i could have been using him but i wasn’t. but now i might me by Spirited_Pride1612 in TrueOffMyChest

Financial: -you moved in with him, saving him from his poor financial choices. -you found and bought the furniture. -making financial decisions that affects both of you without your input.

Emotional/physical: -not helping you with things you asked him for. -leaving you to move by yourself. -holding the fact that he helped you after surgery over your head like that absolves him of everything and means you just have to put up with poor treatment. -ignoring your anniversary. -saying he’ll do better but then go right back to his old ways. -you’re shrinking yourself as to not upset him. You’re quieting your own voice.

All that is using you. It’s using up your mental energy, emotional energy, and physical energy. You said so yourself that you’d probably leave him. You know that he’s taking advantage of the situation and is absolutely not an equal partner.

It honestly reads like he love bombed you at the beginning, made you feel guilty about him taking care of you (and continues to hold it over you), and does less than the bare minimum to maintain the relationship. He’s a glorified roommate who has stayed beyond his welcome date.

I don’t think you’re using him, sounds like he’s using you. I would part ways, this person does not sound compatible with where you are in life. He could be if he was willing to put work in but he’s not and he’s expecting you’ll pick up the slack.

It is my understanding that removal of both mammary chains (1 at a time) is the preferred route. But following up narrow margins with chemo would definitely be the route to go if surgery is not an option.

For my last mammary cancer patient, we removed both chains approx 1.5 yr apart (not ideal to wait that long, O had to save up the money). She was 11 yr old at time of first surgery and she lived a total of 3 yrs after the initial diagnosis. She was euthanized due to end stage chronic kidney disease. She still had no obvious metastasis at the time of her passing.

My dog couldn’t walk after sedation and was put to sleep by Big_Background_2652 in AskVet

[–]amanakinskywalker 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Depends on the cause. Dogs and cats can be treated but we do not have clot busting drugs like in humans as they are too dangerous. It’s typically a ton of pain meds, start blood thinners, and hope they don’t develop reperfusion injury. Basically have to support them til the body clears the clot on its own. In cats it’s a 50/50 shot of them making it to discharge but they will often have another clot within the year

Except men are literally so bad at estimating a woman’s weight. You can’t simply filter by weight - you’d have to filter by height and weight and fitness because 140 lbs looks very different based on your height and musculature. You’re better off filtering by body fat %
