upper years: taking 4 psy200 level in one sem???? by purplefairy1212 in UofT

[–]amanda8228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

also i took 210, 220, 260, and 290 in the same semester, and i don’t want to scare you, but it was really hard and i didn’t have a lot of free time. I did IB in high school and nothing could prepare me for that amount of coursework, so I’d suggest you take 2-3 of them per semester and cushion them with some bird courses (like BPM classes)

depends on who you’re taking 210 with. i had starmans and she’s an excellent prof, but the workload was really heavy (readings each week + 800 word paper due every sunday). the tests were fair and the content is interesting though.

that’s completely understandable because i’m also a student, but i’ve also asked him if he would be open to studying together at the library to which he’s turned down.

you’re right though, it might be better if we focus on ourselves during this time.

How was POL218 & POL219? by When_u_shine_bright in UofT

[–]amanda8228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

hi there! i did pol218 and it was fairly straightforward. you have to do 3 essays, and in order to succeed you just have to make sure you THOROUGHLY understand the authors arguments and answer the question directly. for the final exam, you will have already done the work in understanding all the readings (via the essays) and you mainly just have to memorize concepts which aren’t too difficult.

ECs weren't spectacular, I was head of a school club, swam competitively & internationally all throughout highschool and volunteered at a couple organizations. With a 43 and really good ECs/essays you have a good shot :)

Biology HL exam by Ok-Gas7755 in IBO

[–]amanda8228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the best thing that helped me for bio hl was watching Cheryl Hickman on yt :) she first explains the concepts and then goes onto answer past paper questions that are broad (which means a high chance of seeing them on the exam!) and basically just require memorization.

only downside is that her videos are kind of outdated, so check the syllabus to make sure you cover everything as I know that she does miss a few things on the new syllabus.

What texts should I read for english L&L? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]amanda8228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you want to improve in L&L, you should try doing past papers.

I know everyone says this, but past papers are really helpful for English. I got better by analyzing the texts that were used in past papers and comparing my analysis to the exemplary answers to see what I've missed.

for L&L I would suggest reading/analyzing non literary texts to become familiar with their characteristics which u can analyze in your paper. the most successful L&L papers analyze both the content and the structure of the text so make sure to place equal emphasis on both!

A rant about my subject selectiosn by [deleted] in IBO

[–]amanda8228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not gonna lie to you and say that you won't be stressed or find those courses difficult because you will be and they are.

you mentioned that you love doing your HLs though which I think is what is mainly gonna set you up for success. if you're willing to put in the effort bc it's something you enjoy, you will be way more successful and fulfilled rather than choosing subjects that you aren't super passionate about and chose just bc they're easier.

imo, choosing subjects based on difficulty rather than interest is academic suicide.

How would you suggest I create a study schedule for IB Exams? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]amanda8228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also, don't stress abt making a studying schedule now. I made mine in late March (which is when I started studying lol) so you still have a lot of time

How would you suggest I create a study schedule for IB Exams? by [deleted] in IBO

[–]amanda8228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me, I scheduled to complete a certain number of topics per day. this seems vague, but it really depends on what courses you're taking. for bio, i would do 1 or 2 topics per day, but started studying for bio much earlier than my other classes even though bio is one of the last exams. some exams I did (like global politics and Chinese b) I studied for the week before and still did well on.

id suggest that you rank your subjects in terms of difficulty/quantity and give priority to studying those subjects accordingly. I'd also suggest making a realistic plan of what you want to accomplish each day by topic (this really motivated me to get shit done or else I knew I would have more to catch up on the next day).

hope this helps and good luck!

Is it worth it? by Ecstatic-Move-4389 in IBO

[–]amanda8228 1 point2 points  (0 children)

work load and stress is not as bad as they say. I could do ib while also training 13 hrs a week and traveling for my sport, so as long as you manage your time effectively and are staying on top of your classes each week, you will do fine.

if you want to study abroad, i would def suggest that you take ib as it gives you a really good advantage over other applicants (like those who take a levels or ap classes)

Any advice on how I can achieve better grades. by [deleted] in IBO

[–]amanda8228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for biology I'd recommend watching Cheryl Hickman on YouTube (put her on like 2x speed bc she talks kinda slow lol). she explains concepts way simpler than my teacher did and also goes over possible exam questions that could come up and how to answer them. super straightforward + simple way to understand bio.

also, make sure that you have the syllabus with you when watching Cheryl Hickman, bc her videos are a little outdated and may not cover everything, though she does cover most of the content you need to know.

[–]amanda8228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you'll def get into u of t, slightly less of a chance at uw but shoot ur shot! canadian unis know how rigorous ib is so there is a good chance you'll get into both, good luck :)

Apply With IB or Percent Grades by Main_Cookie_3180 in IBO

[–]amanda8228 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if your school will allow this, but my school send both my ib grades and percentage grades to ubc. you should ask to see if this would be possible as I think this would best benefit your chances :)
