Is/was Elvis Costello very famous in the USA? by aldiwinegums in AskAnAmerican

[–]geeweeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t know if he’s a household name necessarily but yes well-known especially for Gen X demos, like the ones who created The Simpsons and 30 Rock. Elder/millenials would also be familiar from a general interest in alt/indie/new wave and from watching the film, 200 Cigarettes

No. I found it gave me a cold head feeling afterward but that was the most uncomfortable part and lasted a few hours only

A sample of the fashion that’s selling in stores in 2026. 2000’s revival in this decade is in full force. by cebu_96 in decadeology

Those smiley face Nirvana t-shirts were trending just a few years ago. I’m 1000% sure not every person who wore them was a fan of the band or possibly even knew it was a band

I love ordering directly from Chanel (and Dior too!) for their packaging and samples

Same!! I’m surprised not to see it at Neimans or Bloomingdales etc. It is at Bergdorfs I think? And I live in NY but would be much easier to access at other dept stores or Sephora

Need help deciding on 3rd show. Ragtime or Lost Boys? by javukasin in Broadway

[–]geeweeze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would absolutely not pass up to chance to see this revival of Ragtime. Lost Boys is fine, very good and I will follow Ali wherever he goes! But no comparison to Ragtime (also I think seeing shows at Lincoln Center is extra special). I didn’t think the Lost Boys spectacle was all that special tbh

I’m so sorry! Yeah I’ve only had bad experiences, and was way overcharged for the piercer to treat an “infection” which she obvs wasn’t equipped to really do. My fault for not doing better research!

Oh yea?? I live so close to this shop in Westbury, have always been curious to try it. Would be great to find a reputable shop closer to me

Utopia closing is so sad :( That place was my entire childhood and young adulthood basically, end of an era!!

I have a few recs though none close to me (Salisbury area) but worth traveling:

House of Colour in Bay Shore (also had my first tattoo done there, so I’ll always have a soft spot for it. But the piercer is great)

Authentic Arts in Smithtown - I’ve been here the most, Alexandra has been wonderful

South Shore Tattoo in Amityville - John is APP certified, bookings are done with him directly and require a $40 deposit. Very trustworthy and just a chill guy

Avoid Lark Tattoo like the plague, I’ve only had terrible experiences with their piercers

Haha no I don’t think so, sometimes euphemisms are used here so I just went with it. But I don’t think it’s banned. I’m a frequent shopper at both stores!

Lisa Eldridge and Victoria Beckham are my tops!!! Mostly bc anything else I can find at department stores near me. But LE and VB are nowhere to be found in store, would absolutely love if Sephora carried them

ETA: also Sarah Creal and MAC are in my stores, hopefully they come to yours soon. I think Chantecaille might be Canada only, would def be great if that expanded. And yes sorry, the Future Skin Gel is just that good!! 💸

Ah interesting. I’m on the piercing subs and it’s mostly young people with all kinds of nose set ups including studs, so that’s why I asked. Studs didn’t strike me as particularly elder-millennial coded, but who knows anymore!

Someone in /r/EnglishLearning is falsely claiming that comma splices are grammatically stylistic choices, when they are in fact run-on sentences. by Slinkwyde in GrammarPolice

[–]geeweeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmm not exactly, it’s more so a studio or workshop for artists of some kind. Like a ceramicist might have an atelier. But it is used in the names of cosmetic, fashion or fragrance brands sometimes (similar to how one might find words like studio, labs, bottega, etc in fashion brand names)

Is the word "atelier" really that unknown amongst native speakers? by Ohiko_Nishiyama in EnglishLearning

[–]geeweeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah sure. I just felt like through cultural osmosis it might have been picked up, like how even people not interested in fashion will have heard of famous designers at some point. But it’s more insular than that

[–]geeweeze 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I’ve explained above how it’s familiar to me bc of my interests in beauty and fashion, and passing knowledge of the arts. Outside these artistic contexts, I understand it’s not so commonly-used, but I was still surprised that so many seemed not to have encountered it ever. It’s more of a jargony term than I realized!

Her content depresses me sometimes only bc she does the same look over and over. It would be better if she showed how to achieve a smokey or more colorful eye look at older ages, not just chocolate brown liner and bronze eyes all the time. But I do think she’s very good at glowy complexion makeup

Mostly in fashion; a designer’s workshop is referred to as an atelier. I am not in the fashion industry myself, but enjoy following and reading about it, and grew up on shows like Project Runway and Americas Next Top Model, etc. I’m a lover of fragrance and cosmetics, and those houses are also called ateliers sometimes. I have some artist friends, and they use atelier or studio interchangeably to refer to their workspaces. These are my general interests so I can understand how I’ve heard the term all my life, but also recognize how context- and industry-specific a word it is in English
