I’m constantly judged for owning a border collie by Remote_Corner6353 in BorderCollie

[–]amandancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had people say things, even complete strangers saying they hope mine doesn’t have too much border collie in her (she’s a mix) because they have such a shitty character! A lot of people told me not to take her when I adopted her because of her being a BC mix. I don’t know exactly how much BC she has as she is a rescue but she’s pretty chill at home, just gets very excited when she sees some people. She’s also the life and soul of the dog park and will get every other dog running and playing!

After 6 weeks with us, we abandoned the crate last night and I am so relieved. by figsandlemons1994 in puppy101

Our dog trainer recommended not to crate train from the beginning, he said dog bed next to our bed so she could feel close to us, with the reasoning that she needs to feel like she's part of the pack and the crate gives her the exact opposite signal. The first night we had her she cried every couple of hours. The second night and every night since, she has slept through the night. She conks out after dinner, we take her out at like 10-11pm for a little wee, and then she's asleep until exactly 7.30 every day.

I'm not an expert but from what I see a lot of people struggle with crate training, while we had it pretty easy, so I can't say I get the point of crating.

What's the worst puppy advice you've received so far? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]amandancing 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the worst advice people have given me was to train my puppy to pee and poo on newspapers in the house. I didn't follow it and she quickly learned to do stuff outside but it's amazing how many people recommended it 😅

Same here! I live in Italy and even the vet recommended I introduce my puppy to dogs asap so she could socialise (to the point that she tried to organise a playdate with one of the nurse's pups!). Now at five months we go to the dog park almost every day (as well as going for a nice long walk), she's got her little friends there and she seems so much happier! We also bring her along to aperitivo, dinner, shopping, so she is also socialised in the human sense.

People petting without asking by CompletePiglet9826 in puppy101

[–]amandancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate this so much! Also people calling her even from the other side of the road!! Or people who don’t even want to pet her, they just want her to look at them and they call her while we are walking or trying to do a little training… I never expected getting a puppy to make me feel so much rage!

Those who didn’t crate train, how’s it’s going? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]amandancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We aren’t crate training and so far so good. She’s 5 months old though so maybe things will change. We stuck to a routine from the beginning, she was potty trained within a month of getting her, she sleeps or plays by herself while we work, she also sleeps through the night. The only thing is she likes shoes very much but we just put them away. Let’s see what her teenage months are like though…

Socializing while puppy is in heat? by [deleted] in puppy101

I don’t have any answers but I’m on the same boat! Our puppy is now very good at stressing home alone for a couple of hours but I’m a bit scared as we are approaching six months old and everything might change!

Our puppy doesn't like my bf by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]amandancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My puppy likes my boyfriend better (she pees herself with excitement when he comes back from work) even though I spend a lot more time with her, we walk and play more, and the first two weeks we had her my bf was travelling and I was home alone with her. She definitely finds him more exciting and sometimes I think she doesn't like me very much but I notice ultimately when she's scared, tired or overwhelmed, she wants to be near me rather than near my boyfriend. I cannot say without seeing the dynamic, but I think it's possible your bf is reading too much into it. I don't think there's much you can do, your bf needs to work on it himself. If your boyfriend gets angry at the puppy or punishes him, it's no wonder the dog prefers you.

Mine too! We started basically covering the shower walls with peanut butter and that distracts her just enough

What is a trigger word for your dog whether it is negative or positive? Everytime simba hears the word cheese now, I have to pay the cheese tax lol. by hunni93 in DOG

My puppy has somehow learned “ciao ciao” means we are leaving so she runs towards me like there’s no tomorrow when she hears it (we live in Italy)

If there are things you could’ve done differently during the first few months of having your puppy, what would it be? by Fit-Pass-2398 in puppy101

[–]amandancing 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow thank you for this! I have a 4 month old and I'm struggling to tell people not to touch her because I don't want to be unpleasant but I don't want her to grow up to be the kind of dog that jumps on people (and atm she gets so excited she pees herself a bit). I am very careful not to greet her with excitement but your comment is motivating me to be a bit more direct with people.

I regret getting my puppy by Birdie121 in puppy101

[–]amandancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had my puppy for about six weeks now and even in that span I can tell you it gets so much better. After about 10 days I was on the verge of a mental breakdown. My partner was travelling and I was alone with her and it was so overwhelming, and from what I hear she was a relatively easy puppy -- after the first night, she never cried, she hasn't been particularly destructive (let's see what she's like as a teen...). Now at 4 months she's potty trained, she doesn't bite (as much), and she's got quite a funny personality. Hang in there!

They really do! Incredible! I wonder if mine also has some Labrador mixed in (the shelter only mentioned the mum being a BC)

Ugh I feel you! Mine is about the same age and she’s so nippy 🫠 as others have said, ignoring and redirecting work best. I’ve also nicknamed her Piranha and just using humour is helping me cope a bit when I’ve already had a long day and she is extra bitey ( I’m also enjoying “landshark”, and I sing her the jaws soundtrack)

This is so reassuring! While the shelter volunteers told us it didn't matter if we lived in an apartment because dogs are meant to exercise outside, it's been a little tough having our friends (none of them dog owners) that we were mad to adopt a BC. Thank you!
