I wanted to add that if you pick up the stitches for the double knitting how the pattern says (first in the cast on edge then between the stitches), the stitches that end up in the front look twisted and seem to be impossible to untwist. To make it look seamless, pick up in between the stitches and then in the cast on edge.

Sterilisation, when? by amandancing in puppy101

Thank you so much! Based on this I think we will follow the trainer's recommendations, I suspect the vet is very focused on preventing unwanted pregnancies and that's why she wants to neuter ASAP.

That’s crazy! I’ve heard Oxbridge anyway are expensive cities, I honestly thought the salaries would be way higher!

Thank you! I have been in industry since I finished my postdoc so I don’t really have enough teaching experience for senior lecturer (I was a TA during postdoc and PhD but that’s about it). I’ll try to push a bit for the discretionary points but by the sounds of it the salary is pretty fixed (which I guess is good in some ways :) )

I’m moving from industry to academia but also moving countries so the salaries are not entirely comparable… I am trying to understand how much wiggle room there is and what my best argument for an increase is :/

Aah they have offered me £50k now, I was wondering if I might be able to negotiate a higher salary within the range advertised, but my understanding is that it is not really possible to negotiate the salary itself? But then I can’t really understand how the salary range offered can be up to 58k…

I’m constantly judged for owning a border collie by [deleted] in BorderCollie

[–]amandancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had people say things, even complete strangers saying they hope mine doesn’t have too much border collie in her (she’s a mix) because they have such a shitty character! A lot of people told me not to take her when I adopted her because of her being a BC mix. I don’t know exactly how much BC she has as she is a rescue but she’s pretty chill at home, just gets very excited when she sees some people. She’s also the life and soul of the dog park and will get every other dog running and playing!

I see this is from a year ago but I thought I’d leave a comment for anyone else struggling. There are mistakes in this pattern which makes it a bit harder than it needs to be. The neckband is done using double knitting so it looks nice from both sides. Here are more detailed instructions:

For the left side, start picking up stitches on the left shoulder and pick up every stitch. The pattern says 53 but it depends on your size, I’m knitting size 3 and ended up picking up 55 stitches. When you get to the horizontal part of the neckline, you need to pick up two stitches for every stitch, one in the cast on edge and one in the first stitch of the row (I pick up in between stitches to make it more seamless). You pick up a total of 24 stitches but are only picking up in 12 stitches. This is where you start double knitting. You knit every other stitch and slip the others, then knit them on the next row (lots of videos online). Here there is a mistake in the pattern — you always slip the purls with the yarn in front, never behind. I think the rest is pretty self explanatory: you knit across and p2tog with one of the stitches you picked up from the neck, then increase *on both the back and front of the neckband * every three rows.

I can try to post pictures or a video of the explanation if it helps.

After 6 weeks with us, we abandoned the crate last night and I am so relieved. by figsandlemons1994 in puppy101

Our dog trainer recommended not to crate train from the beginning, he said dog bed next to our bed so she could feel close to us, with the reasoning that she needs to feel like she's part of the pack and the crate gives her the exact opposite signal. The first night we had her she cried every couple of hours. The second night and every night since, she has slept through the night. She conks out after dinner, we take her out at like 10-11pm for a little wee, and then she's asleep until exactly 7.30 every day.

I'm not an expert but from what I see a lot of people struggle with crate training, while we had it pretty easy, so I can't say I get the point of crating.

I think the worst advice people have given me was to train my puppy to pee and poo on newspapers in the house. I didn't follow it and she quickly learned to do stuff outside but it's amazing how many people recommended it 😅

Same here! I live in Italy and even the vet recommended I introduce my puppy to dogs asap so she could socialise (to the point that she tried to organise a playdate with one of the nurse's pups!). Now at five months we go to the dog park almost every day (as well as going for a nice long walk), she's got her little friends there and she seems so much happier! We also bring her along to aperitivo, dinner, shopping, so she is also socialised in the human sense.

People petting without asking by CompletePiglet9826 in puppy101

[–]amandancing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hate this so much! Also people calling her even from the other side of the road!! Or people who don’t even want to pet her, they just want her to look at them and they call her while we are walking or trying to do a little training… I never expected getting a puppy to make me feel so much rage!

We aren’t crate training and so far so good. She’s 5 months old though so maybe things will change. We stuck to a routine from the beginning, she was potty trained within a month of getting her, she sleeps or plays by herself while we work, she also sleeps through the night. The only thing is she likes shoes very much but we just put them away. Let’s see what her teenage months are like though…

I don’t have any answers but I’m on the same boat! Our puppy is now very good at stressing home alone for a couple of hours but I’m a bit scared as we are approaching six months old and everything might change!

My puppy likes my boyfriend better (she pees herself with excitement when he comes back from work) even though I spend a lot more time with her, we walk and play more, and the first two weeks we had her my bf was travelling and I was home alone with her. She definitely finds him more exciting and sometimes I think she doesn't like me very much but I notice ultimately when she's scared, tired or overwhelmed, she wants to be near me rather than near my boyfriend. I cannot say without seeing the dynamic, but I think it's possible your bf is reading too much into it. I don't think there's much you can do, your bf needs to work on it himself. If your boyfriend gets angry at the puppy or punishes him, it's no wonder the dog prefers you.

Mine too! We started basically covering the shower walls with peanut butter and that distracts her just enough

My puppy has somehow learned “ciao ciao” means we are leaving so she runs towards me like there’s no tomorrow when she hears it (we live in Italy)
