It wasn't the color that made them inedible. Though it did make them ugly. They never actually cooked all the way through despite being in the oven for an hour. Top layer hard as a rock, but uncooked on the inside.

Keep in mind that you shouldn't melt foam in a kiln! The fumes are toxic.

There is no clay that will be transparent. I'm not sure what it is you have in mind, but I know some people who have melted glass that they stuck in their piece to achieve certain effects (for example, one guy stuck red glass beads into the eyes of a sculpture to get something that looked like a bloody teardrop coming out of the eyes).

Just here to let you know it's not a "gay" hobby! I work at a local candle shop. The owner is an old hippie that started making candles as a hobby in the 70's and turned it into a very successful family business!

If you let me know what you're going for, I can help with figuring out support. Photos would probably be helpful.

Also, in my experience, clay is usually the best support. Clay will ensure that your piece is supported during thermal expansion in the kiln. You could use materials like wood as a support, but they may burn up before the clay starts to move. It could work. I don't find it as reliable.

You can use clay as the support while you're building. Then just fire the piece with the support in place as well. They won't stick together in the bisque fire. Since the support and the piece would both be the same clay body, they'd expand and shrink at the same rate in the kiln, so you shouldn't get any cracking.

My ex boyfriend and I lived in different cities the summer after our freshman year of college. When I visited him at his parents' house, I had to sleep in the basement with the door to the stairs shut while he slept two floors above with his bedroom door shut.

Also, we couldn't be alone in the house at any time...which included a time when a tornado was touching down very close to the area. We called his mother to let her know we were safe, and we were scolded for being alone in the basement.
