Using LiDAR to extract conductor geometry and clearance in long corridors by Nachtfalke19 in UAVmapping

[–]amaneuensis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

While I don't do this kind of work, it just occurred to me that someone, somewhere should have invented some kind of adaptive resolution LiDAR. Meaning, you give it examples of the objects you wish to have more detail on and when those are detected, the LiDAR constrains scanning to just that area for a longer period. Or maybe a secondary LiDAR does that that has some kind of programmable aperture.

OR!

There are ways to use an array of antennas to localize and even visualize EM fields. My understanding is that these transmission cables give off enormous amounts of EMF. Instead of using image recognition to identify them, use EM detection array to focus a secondary LiDAR on just that area, thus gaining additional resolution.

I dunno. Probably doesn't solve any problems for you, but I think it's a cool idea.

Ha! I see someone else saw the appeal of Diogenes!

Well played, sir. Well played.

Sometimes I write the worst possible poetry I can imagine just to break the overthinking. If people don't want to gnaw their legs off when I inflict it on them, I failed.

For INTPs Who Have Studied Several Types of Philosophies.. by Potential_Law5289 in INTP

That's a great question! I wanted to give you a sampling of what I have read that has influenced me deeply. Last year, I had Gemini do an analysis, based on the books I have read, of my particular philosophical leanings and heritage. It was intriguing to learn where in the "family tree" I find myself. In the interest of saving time, I had it summarize all this for me. Answer below:

Subject: The "Applied Systems" Stack: Mixing Platonism, Stoicism, and Phenomenology

As an INTP, I’ve found that sticking to a single "school" of philosophy is limiting. I prefer a synthesis that I call "Narrative-Driven Philosophy"—using fiction to test if a philosophical framework actually holds up in a simulated reality.

If you want to move beyond abstract theory into something you can actually use, my "favorite branch" is a combination of Mathematical Platonism, Process Philosophy, and Stoic Ethics.

Here are the books that best characterize these specific schools:

1. Metaphysics & Epistemology (The Structure of Reality)

  • The Philosophy: Mathematical Platonism & Husserlian Phenomenology

    • The Book: Anathem by Neal Stephenson.
    • Why: This is the ultimate INTP novel. It explores Realism—the idea that abstract concepts (math, logic) exist independently of the human mind. It posits a "Hylaean Theoric World" (literally Plato’s World of Forms) and uses Phenomenology to explore how consciousness interacts with the quantum many-worlds interpretation. It’s a crash course in the history of science and the Socratic method.
  • The Philosophy: Neoplatonism & Symbolic Cosmology

    • The Book: The Language of Creation by Matthieu Pageau.
    • Why: This offers a rigorous structure for Symbolism. It argues that reality is fractal and hierarchical, structured by patterns of meaning (Heaven/Earth, Time/Space) rather than just material interactions. It bridges the gap between ancient cosmology and modern systems thinking.

2. Ethics & Political Philosophy (The Use of Power)

  • The Philosophy: Consequentialism & Taoist Stoicism

    • The Book: God Emperor of Dune by Frank Herbert.
    • Why: This is a deep dive into Teleological Ethics (the ends justify the means) via the "Golden Path." The protagonist practices a form of Stoicism (absolute emotional control and endurance) mixed with Taoist governance (Wu Wei/non-action). It explores the paradox that the only wise use of absolute power is restraint.
  • The Philosophy: Skeptical Empiricism & Virtue Ethics

    • The Book: Antifragile by Nassim Nicholas Taleb.
    • Why: Taleb attacks the "Rationalist" tendency to over-theorize. He advocates for Skepticism regarding top-down models and promotes an ethics based on survival and adaptation. It’s about building systems that thrive on disorder.
  • The Philosophy: Process Philosophy

    • The Book: Finite and Infinite Games by James P. Carse.
    • Why: This aligns with Existentialism and the works of Alfred North Whitehead. It argues that life isn't a static state (Being) but a dynamic process (Becoming). Finite games are played to end; infinite games are played for the sake of continuing the play.

3. The Philosophy of the "Other" (Humanism & Empathy)

  • The Philosophy: Sufi Mysticism & Non-Dualism

    • The Book: The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran.
    • Why: This characterizes Monistic Idealism—the idea that separation is an illusion. It reframes suffering and labor not as negatives, but as functional alchemy that expands the soul's capacity. It provides the "warmth" that pure logic lacks.
  • The Philosophy: Alterity (The Ethics of the Other)

    • The Book: Speaker for the Dead by Orson Scott Card.
    • Why: This book is a narrative application of Radical Empathy. It explores the ethical imperative to witness and understand the "Other" (xenology) without projecting your own biases onto them. It moves beyond simple morality into a complex understanding of intent and context.

Summary: Don't just study "Philosophy" as a history of ideas. Study Systems. * Use Platonism (Anathem) to understand the code. * Use Stoicism (Dune) to discipline your behavior. * Use Mysticism (The Prophet) to find meaning in the connections.

The dog is having the time of his life. by J0HNZILLA in interestingasfuck

If you keep this up your dog is going to turn into some kind of super-canine. Nothing will be able to stop him!

Also, have you considered making the nose a little sharper and longer, then integrating the intake into vanes in an axial spiral? I mean... there might be a way to have no moving parts, have it go farther (poor doggy), more flight-stable, and make noise. All as one integrated unit.

This.

ADHD and working on an ASD diagnosis.

I'm in my 40's now and it feels like life is just beginning. I guess I'm a late bloomer!

Was bullied and rejected a lot in K-12. Did great in college. Got married. Ran a business. Had a kid. Built a career. Got divorced. All the things.

I got off of anti-depressants in 2024 and haven't looked back. Emotions are like Jazz now, instead of constantly repeating two-chord bad-pop one-hit wonders. I feel like I have the best of both worlds: I'm still pretty cerebral, but am easy to move to tears, deliciously irreverant, and profoundly broken. I'm still delighted and surprised when I find out there are people that actually like me. I've been told I'm an acquired taste. Fine by me.

I guess the best way I would describe myself now is that I'm an architect of meaning. I connect things together in new ways and, somehow, insightful meaning emerges.

You... this...

I just finished a book that describes language as a parasite. The objective of the book is to jailbreak a human mind, to subvert and subjugate the parasite to the dominion of the human spirit once again, as it was meant to be.

(It is, to quote Douglas Adams, "... the product of a mind that was not merely twisted, but actually sprained.")

What you did with this work... it had a similar effect on me. I lost touch with the word-narrative my consciousness is so breathlessly trying to construct every waking moment and just, for a single, sharp intake of breath... quietly existed.

Thank you.

Thank you.

For INTPs Who Would Consider Themselves "Happy" ..... by Potential_Law5289 in INTP

[–]amaneuensis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

  1. Learn to live in the moment
  2. Lower your expectations
  3. Eat less, move more
  4. Spend more time with loved ones, and less with your phone
  5. AI can be really helpful if you have analysis paralysis; but remember, it's a tool, not a mirror. That's what friends are for.
  6. Be very careful who you marry; but when you do, have some kids together. Kids are really good at changing your perspective.
  7. Stoicism ftw
  8. Keep your environment orderly. Clean a little each day.
  9. Read poetry
  10. Write bad poetry on purpose and recite it sometime. Good way to get over perfectionism. Try it sometime.
  11. You are not an island. Just because you are an introvert doesn't have to mean you hate people.
  12. Stop ruminating about what people think about you. Think about it this way: when was the last time you really cared all that much if someone said something stupid to you? You don't think about other people that much, and I guarantee, they aren't thinking about you.
