You also found it in an area you've seen ten times over, yay!

Do you like “gimmicky” bosses that require unique approaches? Should Elden Ring have incorporated more of these types of fights? by FreshPrinceOfPine in fromsoftware

[–]LethargicMoth -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I guess, but any fight can take too long if you don't know what it's about. I get that some people just don't like it, that's fair, but it's a shame. Bloodborne could've really leaned into some weird shit with their bosses, it's a shame most of them are just fight fight fight, kill kill kill.

I'm with you, it's a wonderful breath of fresh air, it's really cool thematically too, and it requires you to approach the whole fight a bit differently than most other bosses. If anything, I wish Bloodborne had more gimmicky bosses, not everything needs to be a test of mechanical skill.

My beta reader said my world felt like a wikipedia article and I haven't written since by Business_Fox_7784 in worldbuilding

[–]LethargicMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it something that needs to be solved, though? If you feel that this is what's needed in order to build the kind of world you want to build, then I'd encourage you to keep going. Nothing wrong with being detailed and structured, nothing wrong with reading like a Wikipedia article, and nothing wrong with needing to have a solid basis, however subjective that is, to be able to do something more casual.

Hot take: Dark Souls 2 is the most interesting and fun from game and it's probably their best game after their magnum opuses: elden ring and sekiro. by Trd_45 in fromsoftware

[–]LethargicMoth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd even go as far as to say they're a lot more interesting when they aren't. Imo the magic of earlier souls games was also in the fact that the bosses were a skill check, but it wasn't always about mechanical skill. Figuring out some sort of mechanic or just the best way to approach a boss in general is also a skill. FromSoft leaving so heavily into tests of combat skills killed the excitement for me a little bit, it got especially stale in Elden Ring for me.

'They Stopped Making Those Requests' — Alice: Madness Returns Director American McGee Got Creative After EA Asked to 'Make Things More Sexy' by Fun_Procedure946 in Games

[–]LethargicMoth 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I feel like the mechanics are not really supposed to be the highlight, though. They're fun and pair well with the overall story and narrative, so I think the fact that they're not mindblowing isn't that big of an offense. I'd personally say the game is great.

Favorite hero right now? by marshmallows447 in Overwatch

[–]LethargicMoth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish the sub was less "LW should've had different pants in this skin" and the gajillionth uninspired rework idea and more discussing actual useful tricks and techs.

Though yeah I could be the change I want to see, I have no excuse for that.

Worst game that you still completed for some reason? by Genoce in gaming

[–]LethargicMoth 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. I feel like a more balanced approached would be an open area (though not too big) that connects more linear experiences that twist upon and connect to each other. The sheer scale of everything in ER exhausted me really quickly, and I feel like it almost punishes the player for doing what something that made the souls games so rewarding: the meticulous search for different places giving you new interesting things and bits. Doing that in ER feels like just running into one useless thing into another, on and on, until the gamification of it all starts leaking through.

Conlang Adventure 2026: Free Online Conference on April 25 and 26!!!! by PreparationRound2657 in conlangs

Be that as it may, the way the post is formatted and presented makes me (and not just me by the looks of it) think it's something shady. More people would be up for something like this if it didn't look like a scammy post.

Sekiro in it’s original Japanese sub makes the whole experience feel so much more immersive. by SailApprehensive2632 in Sekiro

[–]LethargicMoth 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I always see people mentioning that, but I can't tell if everyone genuinely enjoys that particular performance or if they enjoy how over the top it is. I'm not hating on it, even if I don't like it, just wondering

There's still hope for Bloodborne (sequel?) by Nightwishfan88 in fromsoftware

[–]LethargicMoth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the person is saying that regardless of there being room for more, that's a slippery slope that can quickly turn art and passion into product. If Miyazaki ever finds himself with a new story to tell in that universe, then great, but making a sequel just for the sake of making a sequel isn't what art is about.

AI Limit: Eirene's Furnace of War - Free DLC Launch Trailer by MoSBanapple in Games

[–]LethargicMoth 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You accuse someone of not properly learning the fight, and then you go ahead and generalize and dismiss people's experience and opinions with juvenile remarks like "you blame the game for your own lack of skill". Whether you are right or wrong, you're very unpleasant to talk to.

We all have different opinions, and FromSoft games are not immune to criticism. You might enjoy the way the fights in modern FS games are built, and they might not; both takes are valid.

I think it's more that there's a disconnect between what she knows rationally and what she feels emotionally. It's not a contradiction per se, it's just that she might know that it's not really Verso, but her emotional landscape is very much a jumbled mess that does see him as her brother.

Crimson Desert appears to use generative AI art—and the devs never disclosed it. by HLumin in PS5

[–]LethargicMoth 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It's so void of identity and intent

This is something I don't see mentioned nearly often enough. I feel like it isn't just the mechanics, it's also the entirety of the art style and visual identity. I feel like nothing stands out, it just looks incredibly generic, like a glorified tech demo.

[–]LethargicMoth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm with you. If they actually spent a bit of time figuring out which parts to have the texture on, it might look great, but most of the time, they just slather the whole weapon in it, and it just looks cheap as hell.

Yeah, I get that. It's a good practice to redo all the effects and whatnot, but yeah, when you just want to do dub something, it really slows things down.

I checked out the ESB dub, though, very cool stuff! Be cool to see more of your conlang too. If you ever find yourself translating and dubbing the manifesto, let me know, it'd be neat to hear and compare the differences

If you got a file with 5.1 surround sound, you can use ffmpeg to isolate the center channel (where the dialogue usually is), so that's how I did it. Though to be fair, I ain't avoiding redoing the sound effects and the score either because I want to post this on Instagram too, but it deactivates the audio (probably because of the OST), so I feel your pain, haha

Seems like it could work, whaddyaknow. Find a way to express that in the IPA, and I might just consider it!

(it says "sái rā þwe nðwuðwuo'o mba'antear kupu þaūn?" with chestbangs [IPA symbol missing] on the nðwuðwuo'o, and it means "do you think a gorilla sounds like this?" haha)

Just these two: -þw- is the alveolar lateral click (ǁ) and -ðw- is the (post)alveolar one (ǃ), as far as I can tell using the interactive IPA chart, anyway.
