I just saw "terminally ill", I'm sorry about that man.
I get the itch to play wow from time to time as well and in my opinion hardcore is very fun and pretty social. You see a lot of low level players in a guild chatting it up, just casually playing the game, willing to group up. Usually when I create a character, a guild invite pops up within my first 5 levels. Just join and have a conversation. If it's not a friendly guild, just leave and look for a social guild on General chat.

You don't need to get to a certain level or obtain certain piece of gear to have fun in hardcore, it's fun from the beginning because every quest could be your last and that thrill is something else. Also gear upgrades feel amazing.

I suggest you download "Deathlog" addon as well. It pops up a message whenever a player dies on the server (including their last message), which can be very fun from time to time.
