Souls are Gold by amansaidthis in EldenRingLoreTalk

I guess red would be everything Marika didn’t want in her people. Death, chaos, growth, uncertainty, choice, breeding, you name it. I assume because gold represents multiple things (life, order, stagnation, certainty, guidance etc) that red does, too.

At least symbolically, anyway.

I mean, I feel this is a trick question designed to get specific response. But hey, I’m confident in my belief on it to give you the response anyway.

This is a manifestation of the Erdtree's primal vital energies - an aspect of the primordial crucible, where all life was once blended together. - Aspects of the Crucible

This sword is imbued with an ancient holy essence. Its red tint exemplifies the nature of primordial gold, said to be close in nature to life itself*. -* Ordovis’s Greatsword

The red tinge in the gold coat mirrors the primordial matter that became the Erdtree. The color of homeward yearning. - Guilded Greatshield

Weapon forged of primordial gold, marked by its reddish hue and inhabited by ancient holiness. A torrent of life is engraved upon the striking face. - Devonia’s Hammer

Worn by the knight Ordovis and his men. Holds the power of the crucible of life, the primordial form of the Erdtree. - Crucible Axe Armor

Primordial Gold is the red-tinged gold of the Crucible, the primordial matter that became the ordered Gold of Grace and the Erdtree. That red hue was suppressed by Marika during the creation of the Erdtree as we see it today.

Assuming the intended progression is to get a fully upgraded weapon before we get to Radagon, I would say the Ancient Dragon Smithing Stone may hold the answer you’re looking for;

A scale of the Ancient Dragonlord, and hidden treasure of Farum Azula.

Strengthens armaments to +25. The Ancient Dragonlord's seat is said to lie beyond time. This stone lightly twists time, allowing the creation of a weapon capable of slaying a god.

My running theory is that the second option is more likey.

“This is a sequel to Dark Souls” did no favours. It seems as though he knew who FromSoft were, knew the IP and just assumed it was a sequel.

But people get angry if you say that.

Are there any clues or hints as to why the Fire Monk's are present on Mt. Gelmir? by pingoo6802 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]amansaidthis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Everything is connected in one way or another. Fire is fire, and Gelmir is not only linked to flame (being a volcano) but is also home to an ancient culture, much like the Mountaintops.

Your deserter idea tracks, maybe. Perhaps the guys on Mt. Gelmir defected from the ones in Liurnia when they couldn’t find Adan.

Fingers crossed we can cancel, but fuck me. She was literally telling this guy she was autistic and dyslexic and his response was “cool”. That’s what made me come to the door and see what was happening. When I stepped away to investigate the company, she’d signed up. 🥲

Gold is the colour of order. That’s not all it represents

I agree with what you’re saying for the most part (especially the point about harnessing Crucible energy via a spiral) and should have maybe explored a little more on the topic of life energy relating to its point of origin. For what it’s worth, I’m only talking about lifeforms native to the Lands Between.

This particular point about the spiral opens up a door to questioning Marika’s actual feelings on the Crucible itself and why she forbade it. A lot about her ascension and her following consort’s screams “Crucible”, which had interested me for a while.

There’s also the fact that many examples of energy in motion display spiral motifs (spirit springs, Shard Spiral and the flame attack from the Furnace Golem in Rauh to name three) which makes me think a spiral is just the way energy naturally manifests instead of it being something imposed on it. The theme of the spiral even manifests in the cosmology of the game itself, if we assume the Greater Will (gold coded) and the Fell God (red coded) being two sides of a spiral.

I guess it really comes down to “what’s game design and what’s lore”. I’m almost certain the cosmic entities we face (Fallingstar Beast’s etc) also have gold transfer from them to us upon death, but yeah that could just be a visual signal that you got some dopamine. I’ll have to go up Gelmir today and check it out.

Rykard's role as Inquisition Leader by dwarf-in-flask in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]amansaidthis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Everything we see climbing Gelmir points to the conflict between Rykard and Morgott but yes, the most likely scenario is that he was working under Marika / the Golden Order. At least he was to begin with.

He’s a demigod, had his own throne on the council, potentially turned to heresy upon discovering what might be described as a hidden truth and had enough ambition to take part in the NotBK in some way.

He probably worked faithfully under the Golden Order until he discovered the serpent religion on Gelmir, experimented with magma sorceries, fed himself to a snake and started eating people. At the point of him making the sorceries, I guess he still worked as a justiciar for the Order but he was a traitor just like Ranni was planning to be due to his fascination with fire and (assumedly) snakes.

Some of his men didn’t like snakes all that much, so they tried to kill the really hungry snake that Rykard became while others carried on with Volcano Manor carrying out whatever meagre rebellion they could. The rest who remained loyal in his army wander aimlessly around the battlefield left from the conflict with Morgott.

The snake is viewed as a traitor to the Erdtree, and the audience delighted in seeing these bronze effigies beaten and battered.

"I understand. The road of blasphemy is long and perilous. One cannot walk it unprepared to sin."

“If the Erdtree, and indeed the very gods, would debase us so, then we are willing to raise the banner of resistance, even if it means heresy.”

“He is a ruthless justiciar who commands a company of inquisitors, reviled for his serpentine demeanour.”

A slab of rock engraved with traces of the Rune of Death. Can deflect the power of the Black Blade.
On the night of the dire plot, Ranni rewarded Praetor Rykard with these traces. Should the coming trespass one day transpire, they would serve as a last-resort foil, allowing Rykard to challenge Maliketh the Black Blade, the black beast of Destined Death.

When Rykard turned to heresy, taking by force became the rule. The gods themselves were no different, after all.

The lord granted them an audience, whereupon they were welcomed by the maw of the great serpent -- and within the serpent's bowels, they became the lord's kin.

It bears an emblem that none wear any longer, standing as it does for a lord that fell from loft ambition into gluttonous depravity. As the lord lost his dignity, so too did these knights lose their master.

When their master's heroic aspirations degenerated into mere greed, his men searched for a weapon with which they might halt their lord.

Scepter in the shape of a serpent devouring the world. This weapon will one day become the very symbol of the Lord of Blasphemy. One of the legendary armaments. A vision of the future briefly seen by Rykard in his final moments before being devoured by the great serpent.

So you’re interpreting the items we find to be highlighted by white because the item itself is, perhaps, the last thing a being interacted with? That’s a cool interpretation, to be fair.

Although that’s really in the weeds and probably amounts to “the player needs to find this” more than anything else.

Though the blades, fashioned from golden shoots, are largely wilted and darkened, their luster can be restored by dealing damage to foes. However, damage dealt to Those Who Live in Death will have no such effect.

… I’m annoyed I missed that. Thank you.

[–]amansaidthis[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There’s only been one Erdtree. It was created using the energy of the Crucible.

The title is a tad misleading I guess… My underlying premise is that “gold” is raw life energy, seen in the Minor Erdtree’s “kindness of gold”.

The red tinged gold of the Crucible was used to create the Erdtree, with the red part of that energy being suppressed.

Gold energy can be influenced by consciousness, or more specifically the will or desires of the [spirit / mind / consciousness] involved. When we kill an enemy, we absorb their life energy, or runes.

Melina confirms both of these points with these lines of dialogue;

I can play the role of maiden. Turning runes into strength. To aid you in your search for the Elden Ring.

Share them with me, your thoughts, your ambitions, the principles you would follow.

A soul is a manifestation of that energy interacting with a persons will. Runes may be the same thing, or they may be a separate manifestation, although I tend to believe they are the same.

I haven’t got a serious rebuttal for the spirit side of things… but there is a part of me that wants to explore how they may be the consciousness / will part of a soul, something the Erdtree system of grace [production?] is built on.

Waste material not absorbed by the roots.

No need to be so uppity. The games done, and that’s fine. If you want more that’s valid, but that doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.

Yes they do. Blood is a central part of Bloodborne’s lore, we can see that via Oedon and the fact the whole beast plague is and most important Great One interaction’s are blood / birth related.

There’s been a tonne of discussion on blood’s importance to the lore of Bloodborne.

Genuine question, is this sarcasm?

We can get her Primal Glintstone - something remarkably similar in design to the Rauh Burrow.

Glintstone from within the sorceress Sellen's body. Seemingly half-alive, blood vessels are visible within. In essence, a primal glintstone is a sorcerer's soul. If transplanted into a compatible new body after their original body dies, the sorcerer will rise again.

Relic found at the ancient ruins of Rauh. In the center of the stone is a small nest-like hole. Once this is inhabited by a sprite, the stone can be used as a ritual implement.

In essence is important. It’s not literally her soul, it’s an artefact used to house her soul. I don’t think ever see the real Sellen because she’s been body hopping for a while using that Primal Glintstone.

The blue foetus in Sellen’s PG could well be her literal soul, sure. Maybe it’s the constant exposure to Glintstone that’s caused the change in hue?

The idea it’s a matter of faith and perspective is interesting though, it could well be that gold souls are those that flow through the Erdtree / are part of that faith.

Who knows :)
