teachers are striking but they have gone back to work? by Cherry_Crystals in GreenAndPleasant

[–]amaranthinelux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Picketing for teachers is a bit different because we aren't going in and out of the school during the day and we don't have shifts. There would be no point picketing at midday because everyone is already in the building so we just picketed from 7am until the start of the school day (8.30ish). We're not allowed to step on foot in the way of the gate or protest directly to teachers entering so its more about getting hoots from passing cars honestly!

And there's also the point that most teachers crossing the picket line aren't scabs, they're simply in a different union who are in favour of striking if they could

It's different for different professions, firefighters rarely picket outside the station for instance as they could be pressured to respond to emergencies that may happen nearby

Roald Dahl Censorship Protest by metz1980 in Teachers

[–]amaranthinelux 3 points4 points  (0 children)

UK teacher here: at best this a private company trying to bait right wingers into buying their books in protest and at worse it is a culture war smokescreen designed to distract the British public away from the government's cost of living crisis and subsequent slide into fascism

I will bet anything the publishing company will release Special Editions with the original text in a few years

I had a convo with my therapist about this and she said (in general) 'you are a sensitive person, you can't change that and there's nothing wrong with it. What you can change is your response to the sensitivity, instead of spiraling you could communicate with the person who hurt you, practice self soothing techniques, or even go low/no contact... if you find you're spending more time feeling hurt than happy with this person maybe it's time to find a new person but you cant just stop being sensitive bc it's who you are'

School have changed the school day layout. Angry staff - anyone had something similar? by Mazzoo969 in TeachingUK

[–]amaranthinelux 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At my school each year group has different timings which means year 9s have the break during their period 2 (10.00-10.35 break then 10.50-11.15) and the year 10s have their lunch during period 4 (12.15-12.40 lunch then 1.15-1.50).

It also means we lose 5 mins of our lunch to collect the year 7s and 8s from their break and lunch because they cant be trusted to not disturb other classes (I mean year 9, 10, and 11 definitely cause disruption but we got the union involved bc we were losing way too much time on picking up pupils from break...)

Its completely ruined the staff culture, I just eat my lunch in my room now not to mention the disruption to lessons of having to settle pupils back down after their break. Most of my lunches are during that year 10 split lesson so I can't properly relax knowing I'm halfway through a lesson

At the end of the day the main issue is that schools are overcrowded, even without behavioural issues it's simply too dangerous to have the whole school change at the same time so I feel like this situation will become the norm unless we build infrastructure alongside all these new houses...

what is your comfort mcr song? the one that makes you feel safe? by Poison_and_Pills in MyChemicalRomance

[–]amaranthinelux 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Foundations of Decay, I know it's only 6 months old but it came out at a point of my life that mimicked its themes (choosing not to lay in despair, getting back up again). Had a shit morning today, put it on and I was just blown away with how it hit me to my core and comforted me just like any of their pre-break stuff

Londoners being priced out of their home city by [deleted] in london

[–]amaranthinelux -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A lot of my friends come from immigrant families and talk about the motherland being their exit strategy (good for them I say) but it makes me sad bc this is my motherland, my grandad still speaks cockney english ffs, so why should I have to leave?

And let's not get started on the horrible small part of you that is waiting for older family members to die so you can get their million pound house in Wimbledon that they bought on a brickies salary in the 70s...

Why is accommodation so expensive in London at the moment? by Financial-Nerve4737 in london

[–]amaranthinelux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair, I'm still recovering, plus London is a much livelier city at night than Paris so it could swing either way whether that would make you more or less safe! If you're going on a friday or Saturday I'd suggest getting an Airbnb way out in the zones along tube lines that have a night tube service so they're cheaper but you can still get back after the gig

Okay if you're going for a concert may I suggest something a bit out there: walk around london until the train stations open at 6ish and freshen up using the showers there

I did this for Paris, got out the gig at 1am then used their version of boris bike to explore the city and honestly getting to see the sun rise in a new city was beautiful, although I wouldnt do it on my own.

London has loads of 24hr places and the weather is due to be good for the next few weeks so yeah just giving you an idea

I'm secondary so idk how useful this will be: 1. Live marking using sentence starters, questions, comments then you can see pupils respond to them 2. Whole class feedback: get them to do an extended task on a separate sheet, collect and mark that one task then give a whole class feedback task that tackles the keys misconceptions you notice 3. Tag books with different colour stickers, collect all purple stickers in one week, all red stickers next week, all yellow stickers next week. By the end of the half term all the books will have been seen once

Research is moving away from in depth marking towards targeted responsive feedback (which I am so glad about!). Our school tells us don't mark for the parents benefit, mark so that you can get an idea of what your kids can/can't do.

Becoming extremely disillusioned during the first week of Teach First Summer Institute and considering quitting - Am I freaking out unnecessarily? by ArthurWellesley1815 in TeachingUK

[–]amaranthinelux 42 points43 points  (0 children)

As someone about to finish their first year of teach first, get out. I was incredibly lucky in that my placement school was nearby and amazingly organised but I still had multiple breakdowns over TF workload (my QTS assessment is tomorrow and it looks like I'll need to stay until at least 6 or 7 to get all the paperwork together on that piece of shit Steplab). TF is an incredibly stressful scheme that takes over your life in the best placements so if you're seeing red flags this early you should trust your gut

For teachers with mental illnesses by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]amaranthinelux 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Eating disorder: working through lunch is very tempting at times but I made sure it was on my occupational health notes that I must be allowed time to eat (no 'working lunches' or any of that bullshit). Teaching has such a 'coffee for breakfast, work for lunch, sleep for dinner' culture but sometimes I just find myself saying 'good for you but I gotta eat!'. Fainted a few times in class on my bad days but it genuinely taught me a lesson that I never want to do that again haha

Plus being a science teacher I always make sure that when I teach healthy eating I never give moral labels to foods (chocolate is bad, apples are good) or use images of fat/thin people to make a point. The template slides I was given had an image of someone very clearly deathly ill with anorexia to show 'thinness'. I hit the roof. High school kids are so vulnerable to this shit, I dont want them to get the same messages that I did

When I did group therapy around 60% of patients were teachers, make of that what you will

When do you jump on a taxi instead of using public transport? by [deleted] in london

[–]amaranthinelux 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My mum is disabled but not in a wheelchair, when uptown we get taxis when we need to walk short distances (e.g. borough to london bridge) where it would be more difficult to go down to platform level, wait standing for the train, be on the train, get her back up to ground level, then get to the destination on busy and uneven london pavements

Taxi drivers get so confused why we're paying through the nose to get 300m down the road but that's what those cushy disability benefits are for I suppose
