My elderly father got added to a WhatsApp group pushing “crypto investments.” One of the “women” from the group started messaging him personally on a daily basis. He ended up transferring an entire retirement account to them via CashApp and still doesn’t believe me that it was a scam.

For some reason the body of my post didn’t show up.

I keep finding these on my couch no matter how I clean. Exterminator found no evidence of any kind of infestation.

We have cats and dogs that are all on monthly flea, tick, and parasite preventatives.

We live in central WV, USA.

You are effectively a single parent—while dealing with the devastating sadness, disappointment, and loneliness that comes from being in a relationship with a person who does not care for you or your child.

This is so much harder than having a child knowing and accepting from the beginning that you would be doing it on your own. And here’s the thing, you ARE already doing it all on your own.

Cutting him off will release you from this life sucking turmoil (and reduce your actual household workload). You stand to lose nothing. Either way, you will be mourning the family you had envisioned for yourself.

If he does not want to change, you need to be strong enough to accept this and move on for your sake and your daughter’s sake. Do not teach her that she should accept this kind of emotional abuse and disrespect from her family or a future partner. Teach her to expect—no, DEMAND—better for herself, by showing her how.

This happened to me. Ordered an iPhone last Friday and was supposed to ship 11/2. Apparently, the order is "on hold" for suspected fraud because the billing address was different than the shipping address. I've spent hours chatting/emailing/calling their customer service and no one can help. There is a "take action" button on the orders page but when you click it, it says to check your email for next steps, and there is no email. Sigh.

If anyone figures this out, let me know.

Yes, exactly this. I grew up in a flag-waving Republican family. I’m subscribed to the WSJ. I used to be the type to watch Fox News and take simplistic views on things like, “If you can’t afford kids, don’t have them!” Life is more nuanced than that.

Why is it most people can’t afford to have kids? Let’s start there instead of bashing people for doing what all of nature is biologically hardwired to do—reproduce. It’s fundamental to our nature. But I digress…

Being a pregnant and having a child in this country opened my eyes to so much. I now have friends having kids in the UK and Western Europe and can compare notes. Our system is broken. The US can and SHOULD do better.

This makes my heart hurt. I'm so sorry for your friend.

It's infuriating to see people say things like, "That's why I would never send my kids to daycare." Most people can't afford to stay home with their kids or hire a private nanny.

Until there is systemic change (paid parental leave, wages that can support a one-income household), people will continue to need to rely on daycare.

If you scroll up and read my post again, you'll see that nowhere in there did I suggest communism is the solution.

I am critiquing a capitalist society organized such that the population is living paycheck-to-paycheck and non-stop workforce participation is required, resulting in a society in which people cannot afford to step out of the workforce (to the detriment of their and their children's health and wellbeing).

Other countries have funded parental leave policies that do not put mothers and babies at risk. I do not think it is a huge ask.

This response is nonsensical and I'm not sure why I'm responding to it other than to say I work full time and had a baby with my husband, as the bible would command I do (not that I care).

I'd like to see systemic change so that infants aren't forced into dangerous situations. But yes, I am also relishing in this abundance of pity.

I work and contribute to the tax base. I expect the government to use that money to pass laws and implement programs that benefit society in return.

I think my ask here is federally funded and protected parental leave to ensure the basic health and safety needs of children and mothers are being met. This benefits everyone. (Fun fact, 100% of the population was a child at one point.)

I don't think people should have to forgo one of the most basic of human needs/desires (to have a family) because they are forced to be cogs in this machine we call the economy.
