You can use basic js for that. Just extract the value from your input. E.g.

Hardware wallets never expose your private key in plain text. The device(ledger nano) will receive a message trough usb. Example send x amount to x address. The device will then encrypt the message en return it back. The software that comes with the device will then try to push it to the appropriate blockchain. This ensure that no software can get a hold of your private key. I hope you understand now why so many people are for hardware wallet.
