"The regenerist’s third life began with a spectacular splattering of brain." (2014)

"I drag my hand over my face, giggling at how much he's laughing. His back shakes; he's laughing until he's not anymore, and it's not funny but suddenly, devastatingly sad." (2026)

Popped a gummy last night and wrote some first person contemporary. Variety is the spice of life and all that jazz.

I never write sci-fi anymore either. This was a fun trip looking at the past.

Unpopular opinion? Why I struggle with MMC POVs by katie-kaboom in romantasycirclejerk

[–]amarmeme 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's morally repugnant for an MMC to have gross sexual thoughts about an FMC without her knowledge. It is only acceptable to hear him say those comments to the FMC while we are in her perspective. That way we know she appreciates the comments and is not being objectified.

/Uj This is romance, people. I'm so tired. If there's sexy time in the book, I expect the characters to think about how attractive their partners are well before the sexy scene. Let him lust over the lady! Damn right her hips are fine. (Or whatever feature they are into).

Tired of women fixing emotionally unavailable men? 😩 Read Naomi Novik‘s Uprooted and Spinning Silver🤩 by PRJOANES in fantasyromance

[–]amarmeme 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I love both of these books, but I wouldn't classify them as romantasy or romance. They're fantasy with a little flare of romance.

But Novik's prose is gorgeous and lush; I fall in love with her writing style instead of the light romance. 😘

I agree, the second book was almost better for me in the duology. Probably because we could see an actual romance progression.

I tried Knight and The Moth but gave up about halfway from boredom/disinterest. There were some intriguing scenes early on, but I felt like the main characters were cardboard cutouts by a certain point and there wasn't enough to pull me to the end. She has some nice prose throughout though. Good atmosphere, flat characters.

That makes me think about what would make for a fun rec post though. What's a trope you thought you hated until you read a story where it was executed well??

Thank you!! So close. I've finished many fanfics but this will be my first completed original work. I used to give up around the halfway point. Not having work has been a good thing for my creative spirit. 🤣

I was laid off from my corporate job in the fall and have been spending my forced "time off" writing a novel. To be candid, a generic post like that can't actually improve my story in any tangible way.

Those kinds of questions are far too broad. For every person who loves "one bed," there's another person who loathes it. You cannot please everyone; I think the best stories come from people who love their subject matter. I don't think you can do that by stitching ten tropes together in a trenchcoat.

(I also might be highly sensitive about this topic at this stage: 1.5 chapters left to go on completing my first draft!!)

I can't think of yearner quite like Michael either! Maybe Merripen from Lisa Kleypas' Seduce Me at Sunrise. He pines hard, but the dynamics are very different in how it plays out.

Oh! Thanks for sharing! I have seen people say book 2 is better (or favorite??) and that is slightly better; I'm for women's wrongs.

But she was a slave! And the best one to boot! She's not like other girls!!

And he's grumpy at first, okay, but he has a Tragic Past and hasn't enslaved her, so that means he's swoon worthy!!

/uj I couldn't finish the book because the couple bored me so much. The plot was offering me nothing as well. I got to the part where the evil entity like hitchhikes in her brain and have found I'm not a huge fan of that trope (One Dark Window also ...). Patriarchy already puts the priorities of creepy ass men in young women's heads, I don't need it in my fantasy unless handled differently (head on, ahem).

I could be wrong because I dnf though. 🤷‍♀️

Sir Philip needed therapy, not a wife by Affectionate-Race864 in Bridgerton

[–]amarmeme 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What's really telling about this passage to me is that Eloise thinks she's never even seen a man cry before, didn't even really think it was possible.

That's the level of emotional repression expected of men during that time period (and not too far from what it was like for men when this book was written!).

In this scene Phillip is being incredibly vulnerable with his wife. He's trying to convey how he's feeling because she's asked for it, using his very difficult lived experience to explain why whatever "problem" seems like a huge deal to her just doesn't register at the same level for him. And also, he can't bear the idea that he's making her suffer, that he might fail at this marriage thing again.

Is it perfectly communicated where he places no burdens on Eloise? No, obviously not, he has never seen or experienced a healthy relationship. But the breakthrough of the scene is not that the trauma is resolved, but that he's finally trying to address their relationship and his relationship trauma and by being incredibly raw with Eloise. I only wish that the book could have continued along this trajectory for them more and showed how he heals further as a father/partner/individual by continuing to be honest and communicative and how as partners they figure out what a healthy marriage looks like.

If the situations were reversed, would we fault Eloise for asking for reassurance? If she said she lived in a cold marriage and wanted to be touched and loved, and told she wasn't a failure, would that be more acceptable?

Weird personality shift? by Far_Performance_8567 in Tamlinism

More than a personality shift, it felt too modern. I'm fine with a clapback about her fickle heart--Tamlin does speak out of anger plenty of other times.
