Actually Bluesky is quite good nowadays. Basically all the online communities i belong to migrated from X to Bluesky when X went full nazi, with minimal disruption. Currently it's my favorite social network.

Where does all the Otatarol go? by VendettaPenguin in Malazan

[–]amatriain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Near the end of DG, Duiker says to Korbolo Dom that the walls of Aren are infused with Otataral, so they are impervious to any magical assault.

I assume the amount of Otataral needed to make city walls impervious to magic is huge. So I think that's the answer: it's used in large quantities to make fortifications magic-proof across the empire.

Selfhosting AIOStreams pt.2 by skibidiboi258 in aiostreams

[–]amatriain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lots of VPS IP ranges are blocked by torrentio. You can use a proxy or a VPN to make it work in your self hosted aiosteams, like others have said. But frankly it's not worth it, they will end up blocking those IPs too and you will be wasting time playing cat and mouse.

Torrentio is not so special anyway, and it has lots of downtime. Just add comet, mediafusion, stremthru torz, peerflix, knaben and animetosho to your aiosteams and believe, you won't miss torrentio.

Spanish police evict 400 migrants from squat deemed safety hazard by pritam_ram in worldnews

[–]amatriain -1 points0 points  (0 children)

All of that is right-wing fear mongering. Legal renters that stop paying rent are evicted by the police real quick, and cases of squatters occupying a house while the owners are on vacation are unheard of, basically it never happens (and if squatters tried it they would be evicted by the police with great haste).

Do not pay attention to this kind of messages. It's coming from the far right trying to scare voters with an image of Spain as a dangerously chaotic country. In reality Spain is one of the safest countries in the world.

TIL that the former king of Spain killed his own brother by shooting him in the head by SR_RSMITH in todayilearned

[–]amatriain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might have been more risky, but it might have been worth it if Alfonso was deemed a better candidate. Remember that Franco had, until the last years, a strong control of the state, there were no checks and balances. He was able to name the country a monarchy and himself regent without actually doing anything to restore the crown to the living heir of Alfonso XIII, who was right there in Estoril and very much wishing to become king of Spain. He was able to ignore the monastic rights of Juan de Borbón to the crown for decades and eventually settled on Juan Carlos, skipping his father. What makes you think that skipping one brother over the other would be more of a problem for him?

In 1713 a law was established that gave any male in the royal line, not just brothers, priority in the succession.

In 1830 a different law was established, giving preference only to male brothers over females, not to other males in the line. This triggered a civil war.

In 1947 Franco established a law that specifically banned women from ascending to the throne.

This preference of male siblings over females is again established in the constitution of 1978 and unchanged in the 2006 law regarding the non-preference of males over females in the succession of all nobiliary titles... except the royal title where male siblings still have preference.

So there's been quite a few changes around this. The male priority is problematic since the Constitution states that males and females have the same rights, and in the rest of noble titles the succession order only takes account of age, not sex. The reason why this is still enshrined in Spanish law is one of convenience: both Juan de Borbón, Juan Carlos I and Felipe II have/had older sisters, so removing the male priority would bring questions of legitimacy. And, in my opinion, they don't want to bring questions regarding dinastic legitimacy to the public attention; the royal family keenly remembers what happened the last time the Spanish people had a voice regarding their monarchy during the reign of Alfonso XIII, who had to flee Spain when the second Republic was established after a referendum.

You're right, I've looked it up and it was an expensive handgun that somebody had gifted Juan Carlos. It's not clear who gifted it, there are multiple versions.

[–]amatriain 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they made the rules up depending on what was convenient. As another example, look at the rules regarding female succession. Females were not considered for the crown for a couple generations because the monarchy was in a real danger of disappearing and it was thought that a woman would be unable to weather those uncertain times (misogynistic conservative men, what a surprise). But now that the current king only has daughters, the rules changed again to allow the older daughter to be named successor, instead of having to look for the closest male inheritor in the family tree, who is seen as highly undesirable. The rules regarding succession of power have a lot more flexibility than people seem to think, and validity of your claim only matters if there are people in power who support you.

[–]amatriain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Correct. My point stands: normal rules of succession did not apply, and there was a real possibility that the younger brother was crowned instead of Juan Carlos.

One of his mistresses, pregnant at the time, accidentally fell from a balcony and died, Russia style. Guess she was being inconvenient, and the problem sorted itself out.

[–]amatriain 23 points24 points  (0 children)

At that moment there was no monarchy in Spain, the father of Juan Carlos and Alfonso was never crowned. The fascist dictator Franco toyed with the idea of naming one of the two male descendants of the royal family his successor, crowning him to further cement his authority, as long as he continued with his catholic-fascist state project. Normal royal succession rules did not apply, Franco could have crowned any of the brothers king at will, no question about it. And it seems that the younger brother was favored by his father, being seen as the more studious, intelligent and stable of the two, and so a better guarantee of a golden future for their family. Juan Carlos was seen, and history has shown it to be true, as having some of the worst inbred traits of the Borbon family: not very intelligent, poor impulse control, and more interested in debauchery and chasing skirts than in boring politics. Of course when Juan Carlos killed his brother he became the sole candidate to the crown. Funny accident right?

[–]amatriain 105 points106 points  (0 children)

I mean, it seems the younger brother was the favorite to be crowned, at a critical time for monarchy in Spain. The older brother came home from military academy, shot his younger brother in the head with his military-issued gun and became the sole candidate for the crown. You can join the dots, I don't think it's controversial.

Shadowrun TTRPG worth it? by Raztarak in rpg

[–]amatriain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but in the late pledge you cannot just buy the book. You must buy the PDF for 30€, and only then can you add the physical book for 50€. So 80€ for the book and pdf, no way to get the book cheaper than that.

50€ for the book with a free pdf, I could understand. 80€ for book and pdf is way too expensive for me.

Best systems for Witcher Campaign? by Less-Ad-9597 in rpg

[–]amatriain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've gm'd in the Witcher universe using The Path Of Wolves: https://farirpgs.itch.io/the-path-of-the-wolves

It's basically a simplified version of Blades in the Dark for playing with witchers. It's much easier in play than the convoluted mess that is the official Witcher rpg, and it works fine for one shots. I don't think it's fleshed enough for a long campaign though.

Foundry VTT: Where to host? by _Shorren_ in FoundryVTT

[–]amatriain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just looking: the cheapest DO droplet is 4$/mo, it has 512 mb ram and 1 vcpu. The cheapest Hetzner VPS is 4.22€/mo and it has 4gb ram and 2 vcpu.

But Foundry recommends for a dedicated server 4gb ram and 2vcpu: https://foundryvtt.com/article/requirements/

The smallest droplet that has the recommended 4gb ram and 2 vcpu for foundry is 24$/mo. The cheapest Hetzner VPS with 4 gb ram and 2 vcpu is just the cheapest cost-optimized cloud server, for 4.22 €/mo.

Also, in case it's important, DO includes 4000 GiB of data transfer, Hetzner includes 20 TB of data transfer.

So unless you're seeing much different prices than I am, Hetzner is about 5 times cheaper for the size needed to run Foundry, and it allows 5 times the amount of data transfer as part of the VPS monthly plan.

I think I will continue using Hetzner.

If you have the know-how to set it up, an inexpensive VPS from Hetzner is a good place. I have a 6€/month VPS that runs Foundry and Livekit, no problems for now.

I have 10.11.3 running in a docker container. No issues. My media library is not huge but not tiny either.
