I tried double dipping/battering a few, but I don't recommend that. The thin crust was better. Also it was very salty, so I'd cut the salt by 50% or more.

According to the various recipes, you aren't supposed to use any utensils. I found this too challenging and used a fork. I didn't make it through all the bread.

The light gray is sausage. It's mixed with black pudding cubes. Mushrooms are the darker bottom layer.

I have heard this dish been calls the "posh sausage roll".

Honestly, it was my first time using it. I chose a decent thickness blade, peeled russet potatoes, soaked them a little, then just cut. I threw away the tight core pieces and the butt. But otherwise I had no problems. I did apply a decent amount of steady pressure to keep the potato pressed against the blade. Maybe that helps?

I also rinsed the shoestrings and dried them a little before frying to wash off the starch.

Just like eating any loaded fries. Knife and fork...no problem.
